Tourists: Buy Clothes Here…read more People have frequently asked me: where should I buy clothes when I go to Paris? My answer is, at least go to Tati. In the world's probably most fashionable city, my old hometown and love of my life, Paris, Tati is like the Walmart of clothing stores. But this is not a bad thing. In any case, it deserves an English-language review for all the tourists out there. In many ways, Tati one of the world's greatest clothing stores. It is *so* unbelievably inexpensive given the quality, that what it pulls off is nothing short of miraculous. For example, I got a pair of pants for 5 euro that fit perfectly (rare for me, as I'm a little dude), looked awesome (grey checkered pattern), were comfy (wool with artificial silk lining), and lasted for two years. Jackets, shirts, shoes, my wardrobe is littered with Tati clothing. Some of it holds up better than others, but it's kind of like Ikea: you buy it knowing that it might last forever, or it might fall apart in 6 months. But it's cheap enough that if it falls apart, you can replace it. Tati's fashion picks up on Parisian styles. It doesn't always pull them off well or accurately, but there is inevitably some work of genius that costs less than a crepe. My one issue, and it's a big one, is that I have no idea where these clothes are coming from. I shudder to think at the possibilities. Developing world sweat factories? Underpaid local laborers in hidden garment shops in the Sentier? Trucks come by Tati every morning -- I have no idea where these trucks come from -- and drop piles of clothing onto the street in front of the store. Local ladies then run and grab what they can. The atmosphere outside the Barbes Tati, like the whole neighborhood, is like a crazy bazaar. People hawking all kinds of goods, makeshift booths, men trying to get you to buy cigarettes, repeating "maroboro maroboro" over and over again. Tati is sketch. It so sketch that it's fun to shop there, knowing that it's sketch, but you also feel guilty about it at the same time. There's a certain slumming chic to Tati that the French middle-class kids seem to love. The Tati shopping bag, with its huge colorful pink logo, is ubiquitous in Paris. It's a status symbol, although I don't know of what status. But given that almost no tourists go to Tati, if you're carrying one of these bags, people will think you're a local, and you'll get treated better generally. So if you're going to go anywhere, go to Tati first and keep the bag during your whole trip.

I didn't realize there was only one review for Tati written in English. Thought I'd give my two…read morecents and add to what Erik said. Yes, Tati is cheap. I feel like every country I've been to has a kind of equivalent--a brand that has current trends for affordable prices. Unfortunately, it also feels and looks cheap. I rather spend a bit more and get something nicer or go to a second hand shop. They do have a pretty big store with a massive selection--not just clothes but also random beauty products, home goods, and kids stuff. Overall, I'd say it's worth popping into. You might be able to get some basics or frilly under garments.

I was pretty excited to see a huge Auchan supermarket near my hotel during a trip to Disneyland Paris! This place is foodie heaven. Just wandering the aisles and looking at all the gorgeous fresh fish, cool European beauty products, colorful produce and more makes this places a feast for the eyes as well as the tummy. As you'd expect in France, the champagne, cheese and bakery sections of the store are absolutely first class. No, make that WORLD CLASS. The in-store bakery churns out fresh baguettes (four different kinds, who knew there were different baking styles and dough in plain baguettes). I couldn't decide which one to buy so I picked up two different ones that seemed to be the most popular with the locals, each priced at around 90 cents. There were plenty of prepackaged yet freshly baked pastries, croissants, fruit danishes and more (great for an early morning breakfast before hitting Disneyland park)! The cheese section will make dairy lovers weep tears of joy, so many fresh, unpasteurized French cheeses. It was hard to choose just a few! (And don't miss the fresh French yogurt or butter, it's among the best on Earth)! We picked up some fresh butter to go on our baguettes to take on the train with us (along with a cheap bottle of Bordeaux) and it was seriously one of the best snacks I've ever eaten. The champagne is showcased on several long aisles and you'll find some amazing deals here if you're willing to experiment. You won't find bargains on the big name brands with their snooty pedigrees, but take a chance on that $18 bottle and you will be handsomely rewarded. There were plenty of champagnes -- yes, real French champagne -- in the $3 (!!) to $25 range. For fun, we bought a cheap bottle and a super cheap bottle as well as a $2 Bordeaux and an $18 Bordeaux. I am a wine snob but I can honestly tell you that every single one of those wines was delicious. When in France, there's no reason not to drink the local vino and with prices like that, you can't blame your lack of budget! That's CHEAPER THAN DRINKING SODA! Since our hotel had a cute little kitchenette, we bought a wide variety of snacks to have on hand. We even had an appetizer dinner in our room one night with a bunch of nibbles and local wine. We bought some sliced meats, a couple of packaged salads, homemade fried potato crisps, brie, fresh butter, baguettes, cookies, and more and spent less than $50 U.S. I don't shop and eat at local supermarkets to save money, I do it out for the sheer joy of eating and perusing grocery stores. Plus, you can learn much about the local culture by shopping where the locals shop and observing what they buy as well as what the stores sell. It's fascinating, free to look, and a ton of fun. Warning: the checkout lines aren't for the faint of heart. French people can come across as aloof and unfriendly when it's just their general demeanor, but you can avoid some unpleasantries by having your money and your groceries ready to put on the belt as soon as it's your turn -- or get ready to hear a stern lecture in French! Expect the person in line behind you to start crowding your personal space too. Be prepared and you won't get flustered. This market is located inside the large, modern Val d'Europe shopping mall. You have to go into the mall and down to the back lower level to access the supermarket. The mall is a quick walk from the local Val d'Europe train station and just a couple of minutes away by train from the main Disneyland Paris train station. The store is open until 9:30 pm on weekdays and Saturday (7 pm on Sunday), which is pretty late for France.

I received an email from Amazon confirming I would receive my boots on the 16th of November. Therefore, I waited at home on this day. In other words, I had to reschedule/shift my schedule so I would be home to receive the package on this day, ie the day Amazon confirmed it would arrive. However, Amazon came another day, not the day it said it would. So I called them and the Amazon rep. CONFIRMED TO ME and told me that she even spoke to the delivery person to CONFIRM once again that the boots would be delivered on the 16th of November. In the US, when Amazon confirms the product will arrive on that day, this is exactly what happens. If there is a delay, then Amazon is quick to send an update. I guess Amazon France does not understand how Amazon works. On the day Amazon said they were going to send my boots, instead they called me to tell me that in fact they were not going to send my boots, but that I needed to go and pick them up somewhere. In addition, I had to request that they actually send me an email with the address, this, after a rep. blatantly hung up on me. I have been an Amazon US customer since 2004 and never had a problem. To have an Amazon rep. hang up the phone on me when I am trying to figure out where the product I ordered is and why, after days, I have not received it, is unacceptable. NEVER AGAIN.
