Stockport Railway Station - Panoramic of Platform 2

Avanti West Coast manages the station; it's served by a good number of operators including: Transport For Wales, CrossCountry, Transpennine Express, Northern and East Midlands Railway. Most services go into Manchester Piccadilly which is only 7-14 minutes away, depending on which service you take but then you can go to a lot of destinations including London, Norwich, Sheffield and Liverpool. If you're heading into Manchester, you'll want the Northbound platforms (3 and 4) There is a Starbucks inside the station which is temporarily closed at the time of writing (January 2021), as well as a WHSmith, both on Platform 2 (London / Southbound platform) The staff inside the station are friendly and there's a good amount of ticket machines. The station is slightly open so it can get pretty cold if you're waiting for a train, compared to Manchester Piccadilly. There is lift-access to all platforms from the subway level. 4*

Given that it is a bit surprising there aren't any substantial shops - it's mostly small outlets for food and drink to take away. These options are mostly terrible...Starbucks etc. However I'm not sure when this started but in recent months I have noticed food stalls in the underpass beneath the platforms. I've had several good quiches from Cheese is Grate who also sell local cheese, cakes and soup I think on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Most excitingly, my Kirkham (Preston) based favourite Pudding & Pie is now here every other Thursday and Friday. Their pies are consistently excellent and the sweet potato and chilli tart I tried today is my new favourite! Way to go Stockport supporting local businesses making good quality non mass produced food and provided better options for hungry travellers!

I got the 142 service towards East Disbury on the way there, the driver told me that they went near the hospitals, this journey didn't stand out, like the return journey. My return journey saw a Supervisor who was monitoring the driver and she was very nice and friendly, we shared stories about Manchester City and my pleasant experiance with Magic Bus compared to First buses, where the drivers have sworn at me on numerous occasions and constantly late. Magic Bus services really do stand out colourwise as they are bright dark blue, similar to Bluebird, whose buses were a lighter blue before being bought out by Stagecoach and converted into Stagecoach style white buses, with a small patten, also similar to first buses. I don't know if this is all Magic Bus services but they come really regular, they don't appear to be really late, the staff are okay and some of them really do stand out. I feel Magic Bus deserves 4 stars ; the only way they could improve is adding wifi onto their buses, like their parent company Stagecoach have on there hybrid buses. I would say bases on experiances with most of the major bus companies in Greater Manchester (Stagecoach, and first) (as well as JPT and Bluebird before being bought out), Magic Bus is definitely the best. UPDATE: Due to declining quality of service and the fact the buses lack the modern feel and just feel average, I honestly feel I was being far too generous with my original rating and because of this and declining service from the drivers as well as routes and the buses themselves being average, I feel Magic Bus deserve a two star rating instead.

Generally on Oxford Road if it's pointing in the direction you want to head it'll take you there. Being the busiest bus route in Europe means you will stand at a bus stop for no longer then 2 minutes before one of these double deckers shows up. The routes do the whole of Oxford road, Fallowfield, Didsbury and city centre. Let yee be warned though, after midnight it's going to cost a whole £2 to get around! Also if it's raining and about 6pm on a weekday evening expect to be stood up on whilst on the bus, with somebody's elbow in your eye.

The Stockport Metroshuffle is a free bus which goes around Stockport and the train stations and…read moreshopping areas like Merseyway, Peel Centre and the various supermarket such as ASDA, To someone who doesn't know anymore, it sounds brilliant, but sadly it isn't. Trains run every 12 - 15 minutes but around the stations there isn't a clear enough guide where to stand to catch the bus and when the next ones going to be, at some point there seems to be only one bus running from one side, so you basically have to go round in a giant circle to get to your destination. I basically took the bus from the train station to the city centre and ASDA and I ended up going the wrong way, there was no clear map on which bus was best to use or what route I was actually going, so I felt worried and it certainly was frustrating at the route chosen as it always seemed to differ without warning. The buses as mentioned were quite slow, and overall they weren't really nice either, the first one was okay however the second was really old-fashioned and wasn't very nice. Overall, I think this service is quite poor due to the nature of the buses used, the timing and routes taken also apply and perhaps adding a charge, albeit a small one is what this service needs to make it something good and useful, rather than bad and frustrating, until then I sadly can't give Stockport Metroshuffle anything over a single one star.

East Didsbury Metrolink is the terminus of the East Didsbury-Rochdale (South Manchester) Line on…read morethe Manchester Metrolink. It is located close to a Tesco Supermarket and Parrs Wood Entertainment Centre, the latter is home to a cinema, bowling and a few restaurants. East Didsbury railway station is also around 200 meters away. It is technically located on two lines, as it also serves the East Didsbury-Shaw and Crompton route, but the route is exactly the same, but just stops at Shaw rather than continuing to Rochdale. The station opened in 2013 and connects East Didsbury to the city centre in around half an hour. It'd take 32 minutes into Victoria Station. The station has a large car park, to encourage customers to park their car and hop on the tram, it's the largest car park I've seen on the Metrolink and parking is free with a tram ticket - but to be fair it isn't somewhere you would park unless you're catching the tram. There are a small number of seats on the platform while you wait for your tram to come in. The platform area is partially covered by shelter but on particularly wet and windy days, you will not be too protected. I did find getting out of the station a little tricky, there is a staircase and a lift, but I ended up just walking out through the car park instead, I do think both exits could be better sign-posted, like at other stations to show what exit leads where, especially for those not too familiar with the area. Pretty much your average tram station, the large car park is handy and it'd be nice to see this rolled out at more stops along the network. 3*

East Didsbury is one end of the C line, the other being Bury. The stop itself is a Park and Ride stop, with a sizeable - and more importantly FREE* - car park on site. This is usually packed during weekdays with commuters parking up to get trams elsewhere, but during the evenings it's a lot quieter. The car park itself is currently part of a pilot scheme where Metrolink are allowing car park users to leave their vehicles overnight**, so that if you catch the tram in to work and then go on to have a few beers overnight you can leave your car safe in the knowledge that you're not coming back to a parking fine the following morning. There's not much more to add here, really - it is just a tram stop, after all. * The car park is free for Metrolink users. ** Overnight vehicle parking was acceptable at East Didsbury at the time of writing, April 2016. Do check the Metrolink website for changes. No liability accepted on part of the reviewer or Yelp if you don't check and incur any fines or other penalties.
