I first encountered Stirchley Wines on a standard Saturday night hunt for beer, just after a few bottles to take to a party. Before entering, I had no idea how well the shop could forefill this desire, or in how many different ways. I was greeted with the largest range of beers I had seen in a long time, certainly the largest in South Birmingham. The mild mannered, humble-but-proud exterior of the shop hides a virtual Willy Wonkas chocolate factory for drinkers. For instance, take stout. As well as the Guiness and Dragon Stout found in most Birmingham off licenses, there's underground blockbusters Brewdog's Alice Porter, local favourites Batham's Mud City Stout, a stout with artwork from Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas on the bottle, a stout from the legendary Mikkeller's Brewery and at least another five or six that I can't remember the name of. Along side these are an even larger range of lagers, ciders and ales, and if you find it baffling there's friendly, expert advice on hand, though personally I find spending half an hour choosing a beer to be part of the fun. Oh, and if that wasn't enough, the shop occasionally sells artisan beer bread, as well as an equally impressive selection of spirits.
Admittedly, though the beers in Stirchley Wines are well priced, those wanting to stock up on generic booze maybe be better off going to the Co-Op at the other end of Stirchley High Street. However, if you have even a passing interest in unusual alcohol you owe yourself a visit. read more
