Wonderful place just outside the Abbey Melk. We stopped for lunch and had a schnitzel, local bier, and a dessert. It got crowded on a Sunday, with reservations for those attending the noon service in the Abbey's chapel. Service was top notch and the staff spoke many languages - menus were also multilingual. We had a beautiful sunny days open to some of the gardens. So that was wunderbar. However, let's be honest we are in Europe, so unfortunately some one was smoking, which took away from our experience. The schnitzel was great - two large pieces and withe the piping hot pomme frites - French fries - was a great meal. I recommend getting both types of mustards - senf, a sweet and a hot. Really nice complement to the hot and crispy frites. The Apple Strudel in cream sauce was a tasty treat and perfect end to a great meal. Highly recommend this meal and restaurant! read more

It's a big restaurant located on the hill next to the abbey. It's a tourist restaurant and one that serves ordinary food and charges you a lot for it. It looked really nice and I was hoping the food would be ok but it was just ordinary food that tasted slightly flavour less. The menu is big and has lots of local and international food. I decided to order to Tafelspitz and I was truly disappointed. This is one Austrian dish I absolutely love and they make it so well but, this place did is poorly. The meat was tender and nice but totally bland and flavour less. It was also so noisy here as there was a bus load of tourists stopping for lunch and it was chaos. This also affected the service quality and made the lovely atmosphere unpleasant. I would not make the mistake of coming here again. Down below in town there are many places to dine :-) read more

Was the food that good right on the lot of a tourist destination? Man it was. This is seven months old but I finally tracked down the restaurant. This restaurant is located on the entrance pathway to the abbey. We shared a goulash and bread dumpling (think thanksgiving stuffing in a large dumpling ball), which was great. We also ordered Kaiserschmarrn for the first time here. If you are American, this is a revelation. After eating this I saw an episode of Wolfgang Puck eating Kaiserschmarrn at Spago because it reminded him of his childhood. Kaiserschmarrn is like shredded pancakes (it's really spooned cake) covered in powdered sugar with a fruit compote dipping sauce. We were in heaven. Maybe it was the Melk Abbey apricot schnapps I had afterward but I definitely got a "gemutlichkeit" feeling either way, which made the stuffy tour of the abbey a little more fun. So we came with a group of about 50 people and the food that they served us was off menu. The quality was as if I'm eating one of those Frozen food. The rice had no taste. The chicken was whatever.. The desert was OK. The only thing I liked about the whole menu was the starter salad. When I finished the meal, I went outside to see what the people are eating. And from the looks of it, their food looked really good and tasteful. read more

Can't beat the view. We did a few tours where'd you grab lunch near the big tourist destination and this was one of the better ones. Typical bavarian fare, the locals probably would sneer at it but worked for us travelers. read more

The weather was nice, so we sat outside, and the patio area was beautiful. The service was prompt. I had the pork with cabbage strudel, elderberry sauce, and potato dumplings. The strudel and dumplings were delicious, and very filling! I was definitely hungry and still couldn't finish everything. My family got the pork with sauerkraut and bread dumplings, the beef goulash with bread dumplings, and the salad with fried chicken and potato salad. Everyone loved what they had, and my father raved about the sauerkraut. It was well-priced for the great food and ample portion sizes! read more
