My boyfriend is a huge cigar aficionado, so it was awesome to stumble upon Sterling Cellars, tucked into a strip mall off Route 6, which has an amazing selection to choose from! First and foremost, it's a liquor store, but the term "liquor warehouse" is probably better suited for the ample selection of wines, spirits, and craft beers they carry. They even have a Walking Dead themed wine where the labels animate before your eyes if you scan it on the TV show's app! Pretty next level if you ask me! Of course, we were there for the cigars, and the inventory didn't disappoint. They also sell pipes and hookah if that's what you're into as well. I needed to buy some cigars for a gift and I need some spirits for an upcoming trip and figured I would kill 2 birds with 1 stone and come to Sterling. Spoiler Alert, I left only with cigars. We have a family vacation coming up and we have been told there is NO indoor dining at our destination. Translation, all alcohol will be consumed at home and I probably won't be doing any driving at night, so we are planning massive and varied amount of cocktails. Bottom line, I need a white rum for Piña Colada and I refuse to use Bacardi. Well guess what, they don't have any white rums other than Bacardi, Captain Morgan and some other BS brands. Staff is pleasant and professional. But... ...I go there and purchase $150+ for wine and cordials preparing for a dinner party. Then, I'm asked...do you want a bag for 5 cents! Seriously???? Go in a week later and buy 1 bottle of wine for $25 and ask for it to be wrapped...sure, no problem. Does the owner understand how cheap and insulting it is to ask local clientele for a damn NICKEL? Stopped there the other day again after some time (it's been couple of years). They are still overpriced! They charge significantly more per bottle, what you pay at other stores. For example the single malt Glenlivet Whisky 0.75L is $64.99 while at Bottle King you can get it for $38.09 ( that's a half price ). For a bottle of Teqila Silver Patron 0.75L at Sterling they want $55.99 when you can get it for #39.99 in many other places and even cheaper in New Jersey. So on some products they charge almost double. So while they are a big store and keep it nicely stocked, their mark-ups are out of this world. Shop around and I guarantee you you will save tons of money on alcohol. Note to the review responder: I wrote what I saw. Anybody can change the pricing at any time...especially after my review...to make a good impression and to look good to people. We have been using Sterling Cellars for 20 years and have always found them to be extremely helpful and friendly. Right now we are trying not to go into stores and the curbside service being offered by Sterling is extremely appreciated. They are now even more helpful and friendly. Visited the store today to inquire about a special brand of vodka, that unfortunately they don't carry. I was walking out of the store to meet my wife who was at the Feed Barn, when I heard yelling from behind...as I turned around I saw two men that were running after me. It was the owner, Steve Morrison and his manager screaming that I was a thief! Accusing me of stealing from their establishment two weeks ago!! I was outraged and embarrassed. The owner stated he had me on tape and told me never to come back into his store (trust me that will never happen). I followed him back to the store requesting to see this "tape" however he couldn't produce it! At that point I called the Carmel Police Dept. while waiting for their arrival (which wasn't so prompt) I was subject to degrading language by another employee, who called me a f#*% moron! After waiting outside the store (in the cold) for about 20 minutes, I got a halfhearted (forced) apology from the owner. Not a satisfactory resolution by any means. There are plenty of liquor stores in the area with more reasonable prices...I would recommend you shop elsewhere. read more

I recently made a purchase of over $80 of liquor to give as gifts for the holidays. My family has been going to this liquor store for years, even since I was little. When I was purchasing the liquor the young lady was so rude to my little sister. She had asked us to produce IDs and my sister had told her she's not of age, but she was just helping me carry it to the counter. She also interrogated us as to why we were purchasing all this liquor. Mind you it is none of her business as to why I am making such a larger purchase. She then began to belittle her stating that "if you're not 21 you shouldn't be in the store" and that she "needs to back away from the counter IMMEDIATELY". I found it quite offensive and rude and I should've automatically left the store without purchasing anything. I have gone to this store countless occasions with my parents and no one has ever spoken to me or my sister in such a unprofessional manner. Regardless if you are 21 or not you are allowed in the store, you just cannot purchase liquor. I understand that she's unable to buy liquor but to speak to a customer in such a way is by far very unprofessional. There are numerous liquor stores in the area and from now on I will be taking my money elsewhere and so should you! read more

I've been to many wine tastings over the last few years when visiting Mahopac and Sterling Cellars never fails to highlight great wines at very reasonable prices! The staff is wonderfully accomodating and well informed about their wines. Looking forward to another visit in the spring to restock! read more

I can't speak to hard liquor prices, but the wine is very competitively priced. A nice selection and occasional major tastings worth making quite a drive. Informative weekly email as well. The owner makes many trips into NYC to keep on top of things and find new product. You can't ask for more. read more

Pappy gougers. $350 for Old Rip Van Winkle bourbon. Even more insulting is the $120 they're charging for W.L. Weller 12-year bourbon. I bought that same bourbon this past Spring, just up the road from Sterling, for $35. Last year, around the holidays, they proudly displayed a sign with the black market prices they were charging for the entire Van Winkle collection. There are still stores around here, run by decent, honest people, with integrity, who don't charge black market prices for rare bourbons. This isn't one of them. I'm sure you'll find a sucker to pay those prices, but it won't be me. read more
