Stepping' Out is a nice little women's store in the Bent Street area. Clothing, shoes., accessories including some jewelry. We spent a short bit of time in the store and had the same experience reported by several of the prior reviews... staff that simply wouldn't leave us alone and let us browse. We were not really looking for anything offered by the shop, so we did not linger. Advice to staff, give customers some space, attentive but unobtrusive should be the rule IMHO. read more

I needed a new pair of calf height boots...the ones I wore on the airplane destroyed the heals with the fluctuation in air and temps in New Mexico. Found 3 great pair at Steppin' Out, but the only way to select the right boot was to walk around the store with them on my feet for 20 minutes. TaDa! A selection was made and I may have held the owner up on store closure time...however she was gracious. read more

Purchased some shoes and a blouse today - great selection in all areas as had been my previous experience. But as many others have commented, the staff can be "beyond helpful" - don't know if shoplifting has been a concern, but oversight can be a put-off rather than helpful. Most women I know who would shop at such a store know what they like and what they want - and they ask for help when it's needed. Based on other comments, by bet is that the store owner/manager could be the problem many of us have experienced. Give your customers some space, knowing they'll ask for help when they need it. A I love the clothes at Stepping Out and I've bought several items there and will definitely shop there again. However, on a recent visit I was horrified at the behavior of the store manager, or perhaps it was the owner, towards her lovely and very helpful employee. The employee approached us in a helpful manner, the manager approached the employee and said harshly "You need to stay on the floor!" She replied "I was just helping these ladies." The manager replied very harshly "You NEED to stay on the floor." Her stinging words were evidenced by the hurtful look on the employee's face. I was embarrassed and felt so sorry for her but she gathered herself and was very helpful. read more

I was happy to find this boutique. The merchandise is great - high quality and timeless. I feel that just about anything that I were to purchase at this store would still be in style ten years from now. The reason I did not give five stars is the pushiness of the sales staff. As soon as I stepped into the shop a pair of pants caught my attention, so I picked them up and proceeded to examine them. A salesperson immediately approached me and proceeded to tell me all about the pants but before I could decide whether or not it was something I wanted she began pointing out other items I might be interested in. I just wanted to look at the pants. She finally left me alone so while I was still deciding on the pants, I walked over to some sweaters. No sooner did I touch one and a different salesperson walked over and tried talking me into wanting it. I hadn't even had a chance to look at it. I was tempted to just leave, but I had already decided that I wanted the pants. My size was not on display, so someone went to see if they had the size I needed. While she was gone, I walked over to a different pants section. Before I could even begin to look at them a third salesperson appeared as if by magic. Customer service is fine, but there is such a thing as too much customer service. I know what I like. I know what looks good on me and what doesn't. I am capable of distinguishing quality from shoddiness. Also, I know when to ask for help. I don't need salespeople pouncing on me as if I'm a helpless three-year-old. I would prefer that someone acknowledge me when I enter the store and let me know that they are available if I need help. I did spend about $150 but could easily have spent $1,000 had I been left to look at my own leisure. In fact, my husband was surprised that I hadn't spent more. I liked the clothing but hated the shopping experience. Next time I'm in Taos I'll try the boutique again but if salespeople start pouncing, I will leave. Shopping there was not fun. I did go onto their website when I arrived back home and found a sweater that I wanted but there was no mention of fiber content. I always need to know because I am severely allergic to most man-made fibers. I decided to look at other items and found that sometimes the fiber content was stated, but other times it wasn't. I could call the store to get the info but I'm not going to do that - too much trouble. So, I guess I won't be shopping through the website. read more

Stepping out has a nice selection of women's clothing. The issue I found disruptive was the employees didn't keep track of who was helping me. I found it unprofessional and frustrating to be distracted by on going interruptions. When you own a clothing business it's important for the staff to communicate with each other allowing the customer to have space and having the ability to know when a customer is focused and doesn't want to be disturbed as well as knowing when a customer needs assistance and would love to be attended to and has difficulty in choosing or outfitting herself. Also the store has a big push to give them your email address that I found invasive. It's important when closing a transaction that you're asked if you were able to find everything you were shopping for. A gesture of satisfaction and to insure that the customer was satisfied. When folding garments that are being purchased, folding them like they were worth purchasing is expected. Mindful to fold an item purchased that when taken out of the bag upon arriving home that the item looks as nice as it did on the hanger in the store. It's common courtesy to hand the bag to the customer by walking around the cashier station and saying thank you for shopping with us and we appreciate your business as you're handing her her bag. A note on the quality of merchandise. It's important that the items you sell reflect how you feel about your store and your customer. Selling a handbag that isn't lined with interior fabric is a negative reflection of merchandise quality. Selling a blouse with cargo pockets that have unmatched or uneven strips should immediately be sent back to the company from which it was purchased for a refund or a proper item. It's important to keep a customer file to track customer likes and dislikes, her sizes, what colors she's drawn to and a phone number to and address to send thank you notes and to let your customer know when items arrive that she may be interested in. Be thorough and your business will thrive. Don't literally hug your customer but make her feel as though she's deserving of one. read more

We always take the time to visit Steppin' Out when we're in Taos. From the jewelry, clothes and shoes - It's fabulous! After returning home from my last visit, I decided that I wanted to purchase a pair of sunglasses that I had tried on. I called the shop and described the glasses to a sales associate, Stacey, who then took the time to text me pictures of different pairs of sunglasses and then arrange the payment and shipping for me. At first I was unimpressed with what I saw. But a determined salesgal (hailey) made sure i was well taken care of and that i left 400 dollars poorer with some cool tops and a new handbag. A few suggestions. ... carry merchandise that looks less like what an art teacher would wear. Unless that's all that sells....,I'm from los Angeles and this is sooo not chic. Also merchandise was placed all over on ground etc...it looked messy. Overall I was satisfied. read more

This place is amazing! Beautiful selections and great customer service. While vacationing in Taos, I purchased a top in this store. When I got home, I decided the smaller size would fit better. I called the store. They actually contacted the manufacturer to get the size I wanted and then shipped it to me at no charge. First class customer service! read more

My friend raves about these pull on pants (I'm not a fan usually) by Lior so we went. The pants are great. They don't look slouchy. I got jeans and black pants. They had incredible shoes. I couldn't resist and got two pairs of boots they are different but classy and they had boots that work with a slightly bigger athletic calf. My friend and I left with bags of clothes. read more

super friendly / helpful staff and a huge variety of clothes. No literally, you could come in here with 5 generations of women from your family and EACH would find a super cute outfit to walk out in. also, support the local community! so much better than going to another (barf) mall. read more
