Seems quite popular on the weekend though, so expect longer lines then. Himber-Holunder Croissant: Nice stream of raspberry jam inside the flaky croissant. Perfect way to start the day. Chocolate Madeline: Like a regular Madeline, but with gooey chocolate in the middle. Adds a nice little extra when paired with your coffee. Pistazie Croissant: I'm beginning to believe I prefer sweet pistachio paste to sweet almond paste. Tastes a bit nuttier and goes well with the croissant dough. Oranais: The pairing of sweet apricot and sweet cream against the flaky pastry is great. Schoko Croissant: Better than pain au chocolat, in my opinion, since the croissant is airier. Also, like how the chocolate is more ganache texture than hard. Quarktaschen: Flaky pastry against sweet cheese. Not as tart as the fruit filled varieties, so a little richer without the contrast. Laugenecke: Love all the flaky layers. It's kinda like a denser croissant in triangle form. Käse Laugenstange: Like a big fluffy pretzel stick, covered in crispy cheese. Such a nice savory snack, I almost felt like I needed a beer with this. Apfel Kuchen: Looks more like a cake bar than a cake. Nice thin slices of apple. Not too sweet. Schinken-Käse Croissant: Stuffed with ham and covered with cheese. This is one hearty and tasty breakfast option. Belegtes Baguette: Cute little thin bread sandwich with lots of cheese and a little veggies. Chocolate Nut Croissant: Reminded me of the Schoko Croissant, but with a Nutella-like filing. Very tasty.

Frequently Vegetarian or Vegan, many items also Gluten Free, it was after enjoying the soft insides of a Tomato Basil Bagel that Sweets took center-stage, a Brownie vs. "Whitie" matchup undecided since both were delicious while Banana Bread would have benefited from more sweetness. Skipping Croissants outsourced to Endorphina, especially in competition with freshly made Apple Cake, suffice it to say that flavor outpaced appearance while the Nuss-schnitte was not like Austria's version but rather like American Pecan Pie.

What they are famous for is not so great…read more What they are not famous for is outstanding. * * * The Aera Bakery is the Mecca for Vegan Grilled Cheese Sandwich lovers in Berlin. They also do a Grilled Cheese-From-A-Cow Sandwich for traditionalists. There is a line to get into Aera. Virtually everybody is ordering grilled cheese sandwiches. They have bread, they have other sandwiches and wraps, they have desserts. The line is grilled cheese sandwich, grilled cheese sandwich, grilled cheese sandwich and grilled cheese sandwich. Vegan vs Cow depends on the person involved. * * * Trust me you can skip the grilled cheese sandwich. I had the traditional version. My wife did vegan. You get a massive massive sandwich. It is grilled and buttery on both sides, with vegan butter or cow butter. There is a ton of cheese inside and all sorts of vegetables. Regardless of what version you get, The cheese is nearly tasteless . You get a great big plateful of stuff to fill you up. * * * I have never had a grilled cheese sandwich place ever serve me a grilled cheese sandwich that I would want to order again. The world has hundreds of different kinds of cheeses. The number of cheese flavors you can work with is unlimited. The number of ingredients you can add is unlimited. And the damm sandwiches come out boring as library paste every single time. You would think at a minimum they would make three or five or ten different flavors of grilled cheese sandwiches - based on different cheeses and add-ons. But that never happens. * * * So what makes this an interesting bakery? The cookies. Oh my god ..... I had a chocolate buckwheat cookie that was the happiest dessert moment I have had in Berlin. I have been eating well in Berlin - and have had some great desserts. But I have had a lot of end-of-meal sleepers. That chocolate buckwheat cookie was everything that I would want in a special treat. Note that said cookie is small. For us Americans who expect a bakery cookie to be the size of a dinner plate plus the cookie has to have at least 1500 calories and a half pound of sugar, And preferably half pound of sugar per bite, The Aera chocolate buckwheat cookie will seem dinky and unimpressive. Just put that cookie in your mouth and all of your concerns about size will melt away. I was happy for two hours after I had that chocolate buckwheat cookie. * * * And the nice thing is you don't have to finish your grilled cheese sandwich before you have your cookie. You are a grown-up now. Mom's not watching.

I had the Chai Latte with an espresso shot, which was very tasty. I also ordered the cinnamon roll; it had a dry sugar coating that made the texture a bit hard, but overall it was great. My girlfriend had the herbal tea, which she liked quite a lot.

They have the best bread and Brötchen (rolls), especially my favorite, Zwiebelbrötchen (onion rolls) which are super special because they're only available on the weekend. Also the Vollkornbrötchen and pumpkinseed Brötchen are great. You should definitely try their apple pastry, Franzbrötchen (a sweet roll with cinnamon), Marzipan/Mandelschleife (marzipan or almond ribbon pastry), or really any of the Viennoiserie or sheet cakes, they're all tasty. Right now I have plum cake and blueberry cheesecake waiting for afternoon coffee guests - and I can't wait to dig in. The baked goods are made the old-fashioned way by real bakers with real ingredients in Berlin and yet they're still reasonably priced. I'm happy to support and recommend this local business!
