I would say that Greenwoods Menswear is aimed at more distinguished men with ranges in day, formal and office wear. I think the thing that sets Greenwoods above the rest is their formal hire wear, which has now been re-branded as the 1860 Formal Hire. As a family we have Hired suits for two weddings where my husband was Best Man and required top hats and tails. Not only where the suits of excellent quality and a reasonable price but fit well too.

They have some really high quality clothing for hire for all kinds of special occasions. They have single and double breasted dinner suits, tailcoat jackets, numerous waistcoats, ties and even highland wear finery! You really won't find a better place to kit yourself/your man out in the most exquisite and refined occasion wear, it is the bees knees. Hire prices are really competitive, with lots of helpful add ons, such as a £5 accidental damage waiver and £3 for cufflinks. They also offer the fifth hire outfit free if you are ordering more than four outfits! Nice, right? The staff seem to be keen to help too, which is always nice and reassuring! The next time my boyfriend and I are invited to a wedding or special event I am going to insist that we come here for a fitting, the clothing is just awesome! Their window displays are something else, too, and utterly deserve a mention as well. With those beautiful hand made ships, victorian one-shot cameras and bamboo plants it's more of an arty display of finery than a display. Asked the very helpful gentleman if they had any longer length overcoats, as there were only shorty ones on display. He said it was a bit early for them to be on display, but give him a minute and he would see what he could do. He shortly returned from the stock room with two coats, still in all the shrinkwrap and not yet priced up. One of them was perfect! But, I said I would like to just have a look around elsewhere first, to be absolutely sure as it wasn't cheap. He wrote the details on a card for me - no pressure, just good service. I've since found it a bit cheaper (but only a bit) online. I'm in York next week so I will go and buy it from the shop. They can literally fit you out from top to toe, from shoes or boots and socks to classic Christy and Olney hats and caps. The nice thing is that the staff are very friendly and helpful, as well as knowledgeable, and the prices actually pretty good for this sort of lifetime-lasting quality. For some of the most high end designer clothes, outside of Harvey Nichols, this is absolutely the shop to browse. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I literally spent about five minutes here as I was so daunted by the price tags. I was, after all, weighed down by a cumbersome ugly rucksack, dirty shoes and a red world-weary face from my travels that day. The lady, who I assumed to be the manager, greeted me very kindly even though she was busy with another customer so I thought that was really nice. Not even close to the reception I'd had in some of the other high end shops, as she was warm and friendly and didn't seem phased by my disheveled appearance one iota. In spite of that I only had to touch one of the beautifully designed dresses to realise that it cost £800 and I instantly became convinced that my hands were covered in grease and had left some kind of grubby mark on the collar. Perhaps this was the paranoia of being in a high end shop. I felt like at any given moment my rucksack may catch an entire display and put me into more debt than my student loan. There is a beautiful range of clothing, accessories and shoes inside this wonderfully laid out shop. They cater for men too, just as exquisitely, but as you may have gleaned by now - we are talking *high end* clothing here. My most coveted item, a jacket costing £300 odd, almost seems cheap in comparison to the dress I first glanced at! These clothes are for more than show, they seem to be both stylish country clothing (which isn't really my taste as such, I'm not a huge fan of the diamond padded jackets I must say!) and durable outdoors wear all in one.
