May I say that Mr. Romeo (owner of the restaurant) understands what good customer is! What a guy! From the start to the end the employees were happy and ready to serve. Carmen along with a young man, were very friendly and professional. The food looked delish and my plate tasted great! Our cashier was nice and wished us a great day. I will definitely come back when I come through Zapata Texas. Shout out to the Chef(s) for a great tasting steak! So juicy! Thank you for this awesome experience. We came here hungry and we left happy! I'd like to add that we witnessed Mr. Romeo and his crew give a birthday cake to an elderly woman customer which I was so thankful and heartfelt to see! Im glad to see acts of kindness still being displayed! read more

The restaurant is a bit outdated. Could probably use some renovations in the dining room. They were however, doing some construction while I was there. They start you off with chips and salsa, like most good Mexican restaurants do. I was not a fan of the chips though. They were kind of hard and not very tasty. They also give you soup. I ordered the chicken fried steak with cheese and gravy and it was good. I would note that the food reasonably priced an the drinks come in very large cups which I like so that I don't have to get refills every 5 minutes. They do get packed around noon so I suggest getting there early. My group's food came out quick and The service was good, but not outstanding. read more

Great food and a great owner! Salsa was amazing. The owner is a super nice guy, came and talk to everyone to make sure everything was good. Place is really clean and even play good country music. I would definitely recommend this place. Just don't get the steak, it was pretty tuff. read more

Overall the service was friendly and quick. We were served chips and salsa after we sat down and also given a small complimentary soup. Food was tasty and served in generous portions. The bowl of caldo Tlalpeño was so big that I couldn't finish it. A couple that I assume were the owners were very inviting and friendly and made sure we enjoyed our food. They even gave my son a free t-shirt. read more

The best breakfast I had in a long time waiters were very nice and friendly excellent service AAAAAAAA+++++++++

This place at one time was a great place to eat. The last few times I stopped in the service was horrible, rude waitresses, overpriced and my food was mediocre. What a shame to see such a great place start to go downhill. read more

The prices are those of a quality restaurant but the food is far from quality. I have heard old stories of the food used to be good, but not anymore. Steaks are horrible, Mexican food is not fresh or authentic. It's bland boring taste. The only good thing from there was me drink. Half and half lemonade/iced tea. Will I go back? Not by choice. Go down the road north of town, about 4min down the road and eat at Rincon De Los Angeles, the food is quality priced, but you get decent food there. read more

There is a lot to be desired when it comes to Steak House. They used to be absolutely amazing, but now the quality of the food is slipping. Not sure what is going on with them. The staff, as always though, is friendly and eager to try to make you happy. read more

My favorite food group! Texas! This place is a gem hiding in plain site, right on the famous lake falcon... Good food, fast service from my experience, large menu- you name it they have it, check out the special when you walk in on the chalkboard, lots of options and a good deal and low price... in the great low key; wonderful slow pace of city of Zapata! You can't beat the vibe. It is wonderful! Not like the big cities in Texas. Small business's all over just trying to make it. I want to say this place is beautiful. They have Tex mex and what looks to be good burgers and don't forget the steak house special! A Zapata famous special. Texas on a plate! Chicken fried steak with cream gravy, some good cheese, an enchilada (try the wonderful ground beef) and a gringo style crispy taco, (taco shell with beef, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese) with rice and refried beans of course, and a little bit of guacamole. Try the panchos. (Deluxe nachos) best border nachos I know of... read more

Loved this place and we eat here every time we come thru the area. But the service tonight has ended that tradition. I've had better service at a fast food place. First it took them forever to bring our drinks. Then the waitress finally came over to take our order. She was very rude. Then she brought out the wrong order. She didn't apologize, just snatched it up and walked off. Then my employee asked for hot sauce. She never came back. When she finally brought my order, it was still wrong. We had to yell to get her attention where I asked for the bread that was supposed to come with them (menu said meal included 2 slices of bread) and also reminded her that we were still waiting in the hot sauce. She comes back later with the hot sauce and single slice of white bread. Didn't apologize at all. Just handed it to me and walked off. The final insult was that she never came back. We had to walk to the front and ask for our check. This is the first time in my adult life that I didn't leave a tip. I've never done that before. But the idea of tipping someone who obviously had 0 people skills would just reward her for awful customer service. The sad part is that my crew and I are staying in this town for 5 days. We'll just eat somewhere else. read more

Took nearly 30 minutes for my medium-rare 16oz. T-bone to arrive. Impossible to cut with the serrated knife provided - finally had to resort to using my own pocket knife. After cutting off all the fat and gristle, I probably was left with about 6oz. Of actual steak. Fries were soggy and unappetizing. When I finished and went to pay, there was no one at the checkout. Had to wait another 5 minutes before someone finally came to let me pay. When she rings up my bill, I see that she has charged me $15.99 for a steak that is $13.99 on their menu. When I ask about this, I am told that they had to raise the prices, and that everything is about $2 more than what the menu says. I tell her that you can't advertise one price and then charge another after the meal. She says that she agrees, and they e tried to talk to the owner, but he won't change the menu. She agreed to only charge me the advertised amount, and I finally left. Will not be back. read more

OMG the lunch specials are amazing here!!! I mean look at the portions! Yum! My Cowboy had the Enchiladas callejeras and I had the Chile Relleno we enjoyed a bit of both plates. Both lunch plates were full of awesomeness. Every bite packed a punch of Tex-Mex flavor! read more

This place is the best Zapata has to offer. With that said, there ain't much in this dirty little town. -The food was decent. -My Dr. Pepper came from a can -the par for this town. -The tortilla chips and salsa are my favorite in town. You should ask for a second bowl if there are two of you. Nobody likes a double dipper. -The restaurant was mostly clean. -There's something odd about the tv's, I can't put my thumb on it, but you'll see what I mean. -I didn't feel like I was rushed while ordering or checking out. The locals might come here for the experience, but to others, it's just another place to get an above mediocre meal after work. One extra star for the chips and salsa read more

I ordered ribeye steak medium rare since it is a steak house it should be great. It took one hour to be served and granted it was Friday night, but an hour? The steak was pink but there was no juice. It was dry and tasteless. I even put steak sauce on it to get some flavor (I never use steak sauce esp. On a ribeye) they also piled wilted soggy French fries on top of the steak as if they were trying to hide it. It also came with some beans and a little rice. There was a little lettuce and a tomato slice but no dressing so I think it was a garnish. Not a lot of choices in Zapata, but this was a bad one. Service =1 Food = 1 Ambiance = 3 Price =3 If your name is The Steak House you gotta make a good steak! read more

We stopped here for dinner tonight after reading the reviews here. We figured the complaint about slow service was a problem that one night. It wasn't. My wife ordered a T bone steak and I ordered the 22 oz. Rib steak. It took 40 minutes for our steaks to arrive (others in the restaurant that had come after us had already received their meals and were leaving. We ordered the steaks Medium Well and they came overcooked - burned to a crisp and extremely tough. We returned them and waited another 25 minutes for new steaks to arrive. The new ones were a little better cooked but they were still tough as shoe leather. Mine also was about 40% fat. We ate what we could and left. We complained to the csashier since she said she was in charge - no manager or owner was there. She was apologetic and only charged me for the regular sized Rib steak. I thought she should have taken more off the bill but she said the owner makes them charge even if the customer complains. There was one other serious issue. We watched the girl that was cleaning tables. The rag she was using to wipe the tables fell on the floor. She just picked it up and continued to wipe the tables. This is unacceptable. I would suggest staying far away from this place. They have no idea what the word 'steakhouse' means. read more

Oh my goodness. Where do I start. First, the building is really nice and I'm sure it will be very nice once the renovations are done. We were visiting Zapata for business and the lady at the hotel recommended this place. Even though it doesn't have great reviews, we still decided to give it a chance. We walked in and seated ourselves, just as the sign requested. It took about 5 minutes for the waitress to bring menus to our table and take our drink order. We ordered quickly, but waited about 45 minutes before our food came out. We were waiting and waiting and then we were about to leave and finally our food came out. The food was horrible. How can you mess up tacos?! I ate as much as I could stomach because it was so bad. Even though I left hungry, it was better than taking another bite of this horrid food. The reviews are correct. Do not go here. I'm sure if this place was anywhere else, it would not survive. I hope once the renovations are completed that they are able to get some people who can actually cook. I would definitely not return to this place! read more

My Tex-Mex dinner was fine. Not really special, but a good value. I had the small Mexican plate which is two enchiladas and two tacos with rice and beans for $7.99. They bring a lite coup of noodle soup as an appetizer, but three out of four of us at my table thought it was worth skipping. The highlight of the meal was a small pecan pie for $1.99 that a I got on the way out. It was wonderful. read more

The food is just plain. I had fajitas and they were just ok. The guacamole was very plain no taste or seasoning at all. The hot sauce the brought to the table was so dang hot you couldn't eat it. Great Ice tea. Everything just seemed to have no flavor Very disappointed read more

this place sucks. The beans were good. That's it. Rice was mushy and the steak was about the toughest medium rare I ever had. So I order 3 bacon wrapped shrimp to ease the pain of my unfinished meal. Take one bite and a few chews and its spoiled ! No sear on the steak. Wtf is wrong with these people? The service was good but what does that matter if your food is awful? read more

Steak House - No grill marks or sear on this medium rare t bone steak. Very tough. Very disappointed with this place calling itself a steakhouse. - Mexican Near Me - Zapata, Texas

Lots of food on my plate. Had The Steakhouse Special and kept adding salt to get some flavor from the food. I have had tastier food. Not a good place for Mexican food. Place looked nice and clean. Waitress was very friendly. read more

Run down place with poor food. Salad was a pile of hamburger fixings. Cheese enchiladas used velveeta cheese. Steak was fried in the hamburger griddle and was flavorless. Lemonade was powdered. Not recommended. read more

The chips are okay. They'd be better warm. The salsa was tasty and smokin' hot which I love. Because of the chicken fried steak reviews, I ordered that with cream gravy. It was a decent CFS. The gravy and steak breading could have used some additional seasoning. I suppose had I really been hungry for a CFS that it would have been tasty though. The fries were limp but good in only the way fries fried in that way can be. Overall... OK read more

Still one of the best if not the best place in Zapata. Lots of room. Several types of food. Good service. Full bar. I had the chicken cordon bleu and it was excellent. Good prices. Highly recommend. read more

To be frank, this is NOT a steak house. Don't let the name fool you! Almost all of their menu is Mexican food with a few dishes like steak and salad thrown in. Their waitresses aren't the most friendly but at least they try to get you a menu, drinks and food on time. The food is way too greasy. The last few times I have eaten here, I have gone home only to be sick a few hours later. It's not food poisoning, just the sheer amount of oil they use to cook everything will be your doom. read more

Well to start off, the name "Steak House" isn't a very good fit, seeing as now 85-90% of the menu is Mexican food (that they don't even do that wel). Anyway... The food is sub par and seems to be cheaply made. The few things That I have tasted were cooked with an unnecessary amount of oil and/or butter and the "fresh veggies" were straight from the frozen section of the supermarket. Taking the easy way out is NOT working for you "Steak House"! Do yourself a favor and Skip this place out! f you're hungry, call me up and I'll cook you a better meal read more

Authentic Mexican in Zapata. Birthday party was going on when we got there, so the service was a little slow, but overall, good food.

The food here was less than mediocre - the service was HORRIBLE. The waitstaff was as bad as I've ever had and that makes this place a definite, NEVER AGAIN. I ordered the rib eye, medium rare ... it came out somewhere south of medium well and when I sent it back, the waitress looked at me like I'd done something wrong. read more

The reviews for this place leave you torn I am sure. Do I go there or not go there? Where is there to go? Well let me help you out. This is the best looking place in the area. it is relatively clean inside as well. The staff is average and the food might be a tad above the bar. That all being said, beggars cannot be choosers. There aren't that many places to eat in Zapata, TX. If you don't want Pizza Hut then The Steak House isn't a horrible place to enjoy lunch or dinner. The chips and salsa are good and the enchiladas were good too. Compared to your options in Zapata, try this place out. read more

This restaurant is definitely the place to go in Zapata. They recently built a beautiful new building in the same location. The portions and the prices stayed the same but they did add a few new delicious items to the menu. The owners are some of the nicest people around and do anything they can around the restaurant. You can't go wrong with the country fried steak, chicken cordon bleu, quesadilla, or the nachos. They also have delicious breakfast mariachis (tacos) and huevos rancheros (watch the kick!) if you're craving breakfast! read more

Hit or miss. Can't go wrong with the Mexican food or the chicken fried steak. Do not order a steak!

Worst experience ever!!!! Waited over an hour while other locals were being served immediately. When I asked the young waitress why others were served before myself and guests, she smiled and said, "I don't know". Well "I know" I'll never eat there again because I took one bite and left all the food on the table. Wasted a lot of money on a very bad experience. read more

I have been coming to Zapata since '90. The food here has gone way down hill. The chicken fried steak wasn't chewable. A friend got the t-bone and said it had rope in it. So disappointing.
