Avoid these crooks! I have never been so frustrated with a company in my life. Their apartments are full of cockroaches and mice and they will do nothing about it. My grandson moved out in May and left the apartment far cleaner than it was when he rented it. We have contacted them numerous times about getting his deposit back and get the run-around every time. It's now been 7 months ! They say they have taken $149.00 off for cleaning and that's a lie! The carpet ( if you want to call it that) hasn't been cleaned in years! I rented an apartment on a temporary basis the apartment was trashed carpet had burn holes all over it. Most of the doors at holes in them. The air-conditioning didn't work and they never fixed it and the five months that I was there. When I left I was paying a higher rent due to the fact that it was only temporary. They kept $167 of my deposit for cleaning the carpet. They don't care about their tenants don't care about the money they will not fix things make a lot of promises they don't keep so find better. read more

They will not follow state law when it comes to security deposits. (My address had 5 or more units meaning the state laws did indeed apply.) So, they were supposed to have an itemized list, accompanied by a partial refund, sent to my new address within 30 days of moving out OR a full refund within 45 days. They even told me it would be about 45 days when I dropped off my keys and confirmed my new address upon moving out. Alright, cool, I can handle that. Well, day 45 rolled around, so I decided to contact them to get an update. I received this response, "The refund has been processed, but we can't send out the check until the boss comes in and hands it to us." For the next several weeks, I heard this same canned response until I decided to send a demand letter. The demand letter gets to their address via certified mail on day 73. A day passes, I get a text from one of the employees telling me the check was in the mail. Yay, I will finally get my money back after 2 1/2 months! Unfortunately, they had to have been lying. I still haven't received anything after about 10 business days. It took my piece of mail 2 business days to get to them. (Peoria, IL to Macomb, IL - Seriously, it isn't a long distance, look it up.) All in all, I have given them almost 90 days to get my refund to me without going to small claims. I haven't received a dime despite leaving the apartment in great shape and paying rent every month on time. (I want to also bring it to everyone's attention that they take out money for "carpet cleaning" in the range of $150 from security deposits no matter what the carpet's condition was upon entering and exiting the premise. They are most certainly pocketing this money along with entire deposits such as in my case.) read more

STC Investments is THE WORST company in Macomb to rent from. Heather is somewhat helpful but Rob is a joke. We have had a bat, maggot, and fly problem in our house which received no attention even after we called the office multiple times. They simply do not care and all they want is your money. They overcharged us for rent for absolutely no reason and have no explanation why. They told us in the summer of 2014 that they were going to complete the bathroom in the basement before the school year started. Today is June 13th, 2015 and it's still not done....AT ALL COSTS please avoid this company. If you don't you will not enjoy yourself at western. read more

STAY AWAY FROM THESE SLUM LORDS! Simply put, this company is in the business of taking your money. I rented in Macomb for 3 years, once with these folks, and will testify to this again and again. I've seen it done to every person I know that's leased a property through them. No matter the amount of care you take of your property, you WILL end up losing your security deposit and owing 2-3 times that ON TOP of it. They patch up old properties with nothing more than a fresh coat of paint and call it a day. Let this company go under and do not rent from them. Now four years later they put me in collections saying I haven't paid 365$, from where or how I have no Idea they won't tell me. just now This was by far the worst renting experience of my life. I guess I have been lucky to have all professional and caring landlords prior to STC, so this company came as a big shock from the start. We arranged to move in on a weekend and were assured everything would be ready for us. However, when we arrived we found ourselves locked out and no one answered the emergency after-hours phone (and they never do). Once we got inside, we found the place filthy with tons of stains on the carpets and a sticky residue on the hard floors and appliances. Plus, the pilot light hadn't been lit as discussed, so we had no hot water. We had several other issues during our stay but I will skip forward to now. In Illinois, landlords have 45 days to legally return deposits. We just received ours today, 62 days after move out, despite checking in several times and sending a demand letter. We were frequently lied to that it was in the mail. We didn't even get the whole deposit back, even though we left everything damage-free and much cleaner than when we moved in. They are clearly pocketing money from deposits rather than using it for the "cleaning" they claim. I would strongly advise people to stay away from this company. read more

Do NOT rent from STC. The staff is rude, unfriendly and no help at all in an emergency. We have had water in our apartment three times now with a major flood once. Every single time it has taken me hours to contact anyone on the emergency line. The first time it happened they did not even call us back they simply sent my husband a text message which I found extremely unprofessional. On another occasion my husband locked himself out of the house and again had no luck getting anyone on the phone. He did not even get a return phone call and ended up breaking into our apartment! This company deserves zero stars. I started renting from them in June of 2018. I was paying $250 a month plus utilities for a very very small studio apartment. That was fine, because I knew what I was getting into, but the cockroaches were the issue! I kept everything clean with my food in the fridge, but the place was infested with cockroaches. I asked them to spray. They did, but it didn't work. I sprayed, and I still saw 3 - 10 alive roaches a day. Turns out, the whole apartment complex had this problem. After complaining a lot, they finally moved me into a different place. This new apartment was scary! It was too big, looked like it was last updated in the 70s and had a structural problem above the entrance like it was going to come crashing down on me! Surprisingly, this dump was listed at a ridiculous $600/month. Owner Scott graciously let me rent it for $350/month. Therefore, he was gaining and I was losing $100/month from this cockroach problem. Animals were in the drop ceiling at this place! I could hear them walking around and scratching for a couple months, which scared the crap out of me. I finally was done when I saw eyes above me where there was a droop in my ceiling tile. I guess it was a cat... but still! Anyway... cockroaches were a problem in this apartment as well, along with my animals in the ceiling. Except this time, the cockroaches weren't indestructible, so they died from the spray (my spray). I had enough and asked money-hungry owner Scott if I could get out of my last month rent, so I could live in a motel for the rest of the semester. He said no, because HE'S ALREADY GRACIOUSLY LETTING ME LIVE THERE FOR A DISCOUNT. Ok. I ended up living in the motel regardless. I came back a couple weeks later to get my stuff... must have been 100 huge, dead cockroaches on my floor. There were still animals in me ceiling as well. My dad tried calling greedy owner Scott every day for at least week. He never answered or responded to his voicemails. All my dad wanted to do was show conceited owner Scott the place he was making me live in and spend a fortune on. DON'T RENT FROM THIS GUY!! read more

I first noticed a post about them having so many rentals available .My Son rented from them. 6 months ago he was told his refund check is in the mail He has never received that check.After I saw that post ,I commented " maybe you should treat your tenants right and you might be able to get these rented".. So Heather C tells me to call the office on that following Monday and we will try and get this resolved. She tells me call at 9 am. But she doesn't answer phone till 9:30 am. Then she wants to fight and argue with me about it's my Son on the lease and she's not talking to me.Rude Heather hangs up on me AFTER she tells me to call HER !! Heather knew who was on the lease when she posted for me to call her. Since all this happened a month ago and my Son personally told them mail the check to my address ,I have received nothing. Heather claims a check went out months after my Son moved out of the apartment which was last August, but my Son has never received it. It takes 5 minutes to call and verify check was never cashed.This company is lazy,they lie, they steal College kids money, Heather is disrespectful. I would have to be desperate to rent from them. I have rented one year from STC and my experience has been absolutely terrible. If there is a company that could make every possible mistake that is there to make, that would be STC investments. In my one year lease I have been given an apartment I didn't sign for which didn't look nearly as good as the one that I was shown (which was ridiculous anyway). The apartment was completely dirty, full dead bugs of every sort on the ground, with a broken door and completely dirty walls. They had even said that the cleaning team had just been there. The property manager, Rob, is an absolute joke, who is trying to justify you their evident mistakes, even when the facts speak for themselves. After I made a complaint about this apartment, he showed me some other properties as an "act of kindness" (his words), one worse than the other. I ended up just staying in a place that I would have never signed for to begin with, just because I had already paid them the security deposit and the first month of rent in advance and couldn't just walk away. While dealing with them I felt my intelligence constantly insulted: their reactions to my maintenance requests varied from hanging up the phone on me to being completely ignored. When they need to show your apartment to other people, they will tell you that they will "schedule this with you" but in my experience they just send you an email two minutes before closing the office saying "we are showing your house tomorrow". Oh, and do not expect to have your deposit back by any means. I left my apartment wiped out clean and I still didn't see a single penny of that money I paid. I sincerely hope somebody will shut them down, because I don't know how could they still be in business.Stay away from them!! read more

Absolutely terrible. Mold in our house, ants in the kitchen, broken locks, broken windows with no screens, no heat in over half the house, whole in our roof (lead to the mold), AWFUL maintenance, said they fixed things but never did or did a horrible job doing so. And after 10+ complaints from my roommates and I they said they would find a financial solution to our problem, apparently that is that they charged us $70 for maintenance fees. If I could rate this company negative stars, I would. Slum lords is a good word for them. The company is so unorganized it is simply ridiculous. The DO NOT take care of any of their properties (Example: our brick porch collapsed the first week of school. Couple days later, they sent someone over to patch it up. Not safe for anyone before the collapse OR after the collapse). I understand it is a college town, but they literally do the bare minimum to make a house livable. For example, if a door has a crack or a hole in it, they will simply paint over it (I speak from experience, as that is what happened to me). If you have any problem regarding the appliances in the house, sit tight, because chances are it'll take a week or more for them to get to it. The do not give specifics on any sort of bill, normally just sending over a piece of paper with a random number typed on it with their logo on top. The offer no explanation as to why they charge what they do. The house we lived in has glass in their windows that did not even fit the frame. However if it somehow breaks (which it does VERY easily) they will come by and charge you upwards of $100 to replace it. And by replace it, I mean they put a piece of glass in there that ACTUALLY FITS the frame. Could go on for days about specifics, but there are far too many. Bottom line is their houses are BARELY livable, their customer service could be rated BELOW a 0 on a scale of 1-10, they will not keep in contact with you, they do not care about your problems, they will simply tell you they will get back to you (which they never do). If I could do it all over again, I would literally rent from ANY company in Macomb over this complete joke of a company. read more

STC doesn't even deserve 1 star. They overlapped my lease with the prior lessors and I moved into a completely trashed house. I planned to move in at 9am and instead came to inspect a house that was not safe and extremely dirty. The carpets reaked of dog piss and garbage and had to be ripped up immediately, the walls all needed to be painted, nothing was cleaned, windows were broken, the toliet was leaking water into the basement, shattered glass was all over the backyard, food was still in the fridge, and there is a spider and ant problem. The staff was aware I had a pet and found it acceptable to have nails sticking straight out of the ground and staples sticking out of the floors. My leasing agents were not sympathetic and did not take proper action to get everything completed and fixed for me to move in. This has been the worst experience I've ever had moving, I've never met more unprofessional people in my life. They came up with unrealistic time spans on when everything would get done and overlapped leases. I would never trust STC with any formal contract and I would never ever recommend living on any of their properties. The houses have not had health inspections and would NOT pass. IT has been days since i moved in and it is still not complete. I do not feel safe with the broken windows and broken window locks and my leasing agent told me that it is not an immediate safety concern. Do not let these people take advantage of you since you are in a college town, It has been a few days since moving and no one has showed up to clean up the yard and i was told to stop "barking orders" by my extremely unprofessional leasing agent. read more

DO NOT RENT from this company. I would rate this company negative stars if I could. They are the true meaning of Slum Lords.The house my daughter rented with her college roommates is absolutely disgusting and I am not sure it would pass any type of inspection, DO NOT trust the manager, as he is less than honest. He will tell you that he will fix something and he won't. He rented this as a 5 bedroom and the basement bedroom has water damage which he lied about. The carpet smelled musty and the walls had only been painted from the bottom up about 6 inches. They tried to cover this up, but the day before move in they had rainfall and guess what? Yep, the bedroom flooded again. The other roommate had to move into a different place (another disgusting property of STC) which left four of them to pay utilities instead of five. I used the argument that it will cost the same to heat the house as it would if there were 5 of them, but they wouldn't budge. I am honestly embarrassed to even say how much they are paying in rent for this dump. It took us hours to clean the scum off the bathroom shower, even though they claimed it had been cleaned before the girls moved in. All the flooring is completely disgusting. Holes in the vinyl and carpet with huge stains and tears. The girls are unable to walk around without shoes on. The basement wall is bowed. This house has serious structural problems as well as wiring. I do understand this is college town, but the condition of their houses makes them barely habitable. They take advantage of hard working college students and have no conscience. DO NOT LET YOUR COLLEGE STUDENT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY! read more
