The theme song for this trip to Denver is difficult but after some serious and spirited debate between myself and my passenger it was decided that there are actually two songs that fit. Part one of the trip is covered by the Doors "Riders on the Storm" and part two will be covered by Stealers Wheel "Stuck in the Middle with You" which barely beat out Brewer and Shipleys "One Toke Over the Line" which I guess could be the background music for this entire journey.
Each of these iconic rock and roll classics have a line or two or three of lyrics that just happen to fit our status at certain points of the journey.
There's a killer on the road
His brain is squirmin' like a toad
Take a long holiday
Let your children play
If you give this man a ride
Sweet family will die
Killer on the road, yeah
We slept for a good 6 hours at a rest area west of North Platte Nebraska, surrounded by the hum of diesel engines from midnight over the road truckers and the door slams of occasional wayward travelers rushing to the restroom before the gas station burrito they consumed a hundred miles back forcefully exits their body and causes an issue that they are not quite prepared for.
Nova started calling Staybridge as soon as we woke, telling them what time we'd be arriving and begging for an early check in. The begging continued once we arrived but every attempt, including a bribe was meet with a stone face and a stern no.
Personally I don't care, these things don't bother me but when it comes to Nova and her not getting her way, things tend to get a little bit ugly. She wanted a shower, and she wanted it now! The lady at the counter claimed they had no room was ready and it was pushing 3 o'clock. Now maybe they were shortstaffed that day, maybe people called in sick, who knows but the point is we had commitments and neither one of us was too keen on going to these meetings without first taking a shower.
Once we finally got our room things went even further downhill, starting with dirty sheets and what appeared to be either dried chewing tobacco or human waste on one of the pillow cases. (see photo) and air vents that hadnt been cleaned since Obama was in office.
Had this been a roadside motel in the middle of nowhere, the kind of place that I love to hole up in, write and ingest large amounts of whatever narcotics I can get my hands on, you kinda expect that type of shit, but she paid a premium for this room and anything less then premium just isn't acceptable.
The rest of the room however was great. A very nice kitchen area, sitting area, bathroom was good and despite the one fouled pillow cover the beds were comfortable.
So why only 2 stars. I'm glad you asked my friend. The front desk personal was appauling and was told so not just by Nova but a few other guests who were trying to check in as well. One hotel does not a chain make but in this case, this particular place is no longer an option for us. read more
