Must see for history buffs. You know why, the general population will think you crazy…read more.. The firt itself is gone. I was hoping to see a wooden structure with all its glory and warscars... But no wood was used so the fort was trenches and mudhuts... This town/village houses 160 people and some government military institutions as the name changed to the Kansas Soldierss' Home back in 1890!!! The fort was built in 1865 to protect pioneers traversing the santa fe trail heading to the southwest (new mexico territories). All skirmishes westward would besed in fort dodge since 900 miles north or south would get you close to canada and mejico. Plus this is 1300 miles from disneyland! Basically the "Plain" Indian campaigns were based from here. Needless to say it took five or so years to handle the Comanche and Kiowa tribes (im not trivializing genocide). The fort left all indian skirmishes to small raids rather than battles. General Custer was based here and his home is a museum now. Although the fort had a short life span, this spot was super important with manifest destiny post civil war. And yes, western kansas was confederate but so far out, western kansas had little influence for the civil war. Forts started popping up in surrounding areas, thanks to railroad expansion thus leading to firt dodge's limited lifespan. Fyi. Everything closed on sunday. I missed the museum :/

It was dusty in the museum but it was nice to see the old relics displayed. The underground walk way was rebuilt in the 40's so we were told. And yes there is no proof of the Daltons actually being there but it was up to your imagination to think about it. There were many posters to read about the gang which took much of our time since the rest is easy and quick to see. The house is super small inside as you notice from the outside but nice to see the dated furniture. I looked at the $5 admission fee per person as a donation for the historic society. And the best part they had those candy cigarettes that I remembered when I was a kid. Best thing ever.

Although it was a quick stop, it was fun skipping on the yellow brick road! If you're lucky, Dorothy can be your tour guide as you explore The Wizard of Oz themed setup. There are other small self guided exhibits as well such as a Victorian room, Old Medical Tools room, and a Native American room. Their gift shop had a lot of cute items and Nancy at the register was absolutely sweet ! She was very welcoming, informative, and was lovely to talk to. We enjoyed all the photo ops they had and would be back again!

Its a wonderful place to visit for historians to glimpse how three generations lived in 1860 to 1960. The owners were some dude (1st gen) and purchased by german immigrants in 1879. The 2nd gen mueller schmidts had two kids and the kids went kid-less then donated to some historical society no one cares about in 1960 or so. Anyhoo. Its a nice. One of the best homes now in present day dodge nonetheless in 1860:D

We learned so much about the history of teachers. It was actually quite fun! Redonda gave us a tour, she was full of charisma and knowledge. She made the tour that much more fun! The wax museum was neat as well. I thought it was odd that there was a Dracula part in the wax museum, that's the only reason I'm giving this review 4 stars instead of 5. I felt it took away from the history and genuineness of the museum.
