Johannes Gutenberg (1400-1468) is best known as the inventor of letterpress printing. If you've ever heard of the Gutenberg Bible, yes, that's this guy. His work started the Printing Revolution in Europe and is regarded as a milestone of the second millennium, ushering in the modern period of human history.
The man lived here in Strasbourg from 1439 to 1444. It was in Strasbourg in 1440 that he is said to have perfected and unveiled the secret of printing based on his research.
The statue dates back to 1840. It is in the center of the plaza and depicts a bearded Gutenburg holding a page of the Scriptures with the printing press at his side. The page apparently reads "And there was light" in French but the copper statue is too corroded and in need of a cleaning and protecting.
