One of the first things the cruise people see when they arrive in Trapani but since I arrived here by road, it was less intentional. This classical statue pays tribute to the famous leader.
Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882) was an Italian general who contributed greatly to the Italian unification and the Kingdom of Italy. Considered one of the greatest generals of modern times, he was briefly Dictator of Sicily and was then a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Kingdom of Italy (Camera dei deputati del Regno d'Italia) which formed the Italian Parliament.
He was well liked by many and there was praise from many intellectuals and political figures from Abraham Lincoln to Alexandre Dumas to Charles Dickens and Che Guevara. Quite the wide range.
This statue features the man standing with right hand on him and left hand on sword. At the foot of the statue, a lion with its paw on a shield that says "Liberta."
