I called this barber after reading positive reviews on the internet. I'm not from Edinburgh and so it was a one off cut. I have been to many barbers before and despite being female I have had a 100% acceptance rate. Why, you may ask? Well simply because my hair is identical to all the males who go into barbers: short.
When I asked the owner why he was refusing me he said because female haircuts take longer than male ones and this does not fit in with the books. Fair enough I thought, but why would my hair, which is an identical length to the average man's to cut? He simply had no real answer but said that if other females saw me in the shop they would argue that they should be allowed too and their long hair would take too much time for our slots. I gave him a simple answer to say short hair only rather than men's hair only. He just said this would not work. Obviously it has worked for so many other establishments and should here.
My long haired partner has asked in other barbers I have attended whether she could have her haircut simply to hear the reply, "sorry but we only do short hair" to which my partner replied "okay thank you". The difference between this conversation and the previous one is simply that no sexism can be found here, and no element of moral dissatisfaction. Severely disappointed. read more
