The Nest

Arlington Heights

TL:DR - An emotionally moving experience that immersed the senses…read more Located South of Ktown and in the same building as Lab Rat Escape Room. There is street parking on the adjacent streets. Before I begin to gush about how much I love this experience, I think its important to note that this is not an escape room. There are puzzle elements but it is first and foremost a story. And that story is fucking good! I had done the Lab Rat escape room the previous year and it is still the best escape room I have ever done. I wanted to see what else Hatch Escapes offered and the Nest sounded great, so I went with that. My wife and I showed up on a cool Sunday morning and we're unsure of what to expect. We were lead to the 5th floor of the building and down a row of storage units. We were handed a flashlight, a tape deck, and then were guided into one. What would ensue for the next 2 hours was a beautiful story of promise, romance, dreams, heartbreak, and the memories of a world that might have existed. I was honestly not ready for this. I am not a crier in the slightest and found myself tearing up as I progressed through the rooms. The final room took all my will to not just break down bawling. When we walked back out into the sun, I felt a renewed sense of appreciation for the people in my life. If you're on the fence about going, just do it. You will have a great time and a moving experience.

The Nest says online that 2 to 4 can sign up at once, but honestly after going through it, I felt two of us was perfect, as noted in another review, some spaces are tight and you do have to duck under some areas. I don't want to give any secrets away or spoil anything, because you want to arrive and immerse yourself in the experience. Let's just say I didn't understand the other reviews about that it can make you feel emotional, until halfway through, something got me in the feels, and then at the very end, just when you think it's over, one more thing got all my emotions hit (in a good way) and I didn't want to leave. It was so special. The Nest is similar to an escape room as you are still solving some puzzles, but it's without pressure and everything builds upon itself as you go. I definitely recommend The Nest. I know it's strange but, I almost want to go back and do it again alone, just to absorb it in all over again.

Nothing beats the magic of LA's KTown…read more Koreatown is a neighborhood bordering Downtown LA as well as Mid-Wilshire, Hollywood and so many other get areas in Los Angeles. It resides in the central east side of town with amazing eateries, siperies, bars, taverns and even music venues like the iconic Wiltern theater off Wilshire/Vermont. You can access public transit via LA Metro, LADOT DASH and it's very own D/Purple Line and B/Red line - though the Purple Line is being extended and serviced the early half of the summer. Driving is still fairly easy, though traffic is extra real during the day and early evening. Loads of scooters, bikes and of course ride share in the area. One of my favorite places to eat is still Monty's Good Burger on Western Avenue between 5th and 6th. Which is also next to Franks and Hanks dive bar and The Artist Tree, both places I support. Discover a ton of karaoke popular spots off 8th like Rosen Karaoke or karaoke w/ cocktails, video games, vendors, patio fun and dancing at the speakeasy Break Room 86, located on the side of The LINE LA hotel off Ardmore Avenue/Wilshire Blvd just across from the Wilshire/Normandie Metro Station. Do K-BBQ at Baekjeong, now on 8th and a local favorite of my favorite k-town human Sarah S. Take in historical buildings, admire the new huge apartment buildings, support small grocers and markets. Get the big essentials at your local Jon's, Ralphs, Vons and of course H Mart. Good bars, fun shopping, magical eats, city scenery the glam and the gritty. Reading at your local Pio Pico Koreatown Branch Library is fundamental as well as at local mom & pop bookshops and stores like SeJong or Happy Bookstore, both on Western Diversity, culture, art, in a foodie and walkable slice of flavor where local meets tourist in this melting pot inspired and thriving with Korean and Asian Culture. It's not the most cost affordable area with so many lavish buildings popping up monthly if not weekly, but it's still KTown at its core. There's nearly two doesn't schools including the Southwestern Law School and the Wilshire Private School (formerly Wilshire Elementary among other names). Festivals and gathering throughout the year especially for major holidays like Korean New Year and Chinese New Year both also often referred to as Lunar New Year in many parts of the world. What is LA if not a city blended of all kinds of people learning, growing and thriving as best they can. Koreatown is without a doubt a huge part of that.

Besides that it's also known for 24/7 economy and spas and if that's your jam then you need to come get it man! For us foodies it's a paradise of the late night coffee shops, restaurants and Oh Yeah them sweet dessert shops! Yes I know parking can be an issue but that's an easy fix if you come early and make a day trip out of it. And yeah some people make that complaint of homeless and the streets are dirty but you know what, it's OG and that's what's up because it keeps on thriving. And I say this. I drive on her streets cause she's my companion, I walk her streets cause she knows who I am. It's the city I use to live in, the City of Angels, we were once lonely and together now we never cry. No judgment here like some other cities in deep orange and no worrying about labels and what you look like. That's how it should be, a place where you can be you and not looked down upon. Mix that up with amazing food and a fire nightlife and you have yourself this very special place. I'm not writing this because I grew up here I'm just stating the facts! And that's my take on it, Peace out my peeps...

An absolute must-visit in LA! Fully enjoyed Urban Light, Monet, and Do Ho Suh's masterpieces…read more I had an increy time fully immersing myself in the art here! Starting with an essential photo at the signature Urban Light installation, I was blown away by the beautiful Claude Monet painting and the breathtaking, large-scale Hanok installation by Do Ho Suh. The level of detail in Suh's work was absolutely mesmerizing, and I found myself staring at it for a long time. Beyond the artwork, the panoramic views of the LA cityscape looking out through the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows were a visual treat in themselves-it felt like looking at a living painting!

All kinds of different people would come in here, and they took Korean classes and it was a community like no other place I have ever seen in Los Angeles. Then one day, it was ALL OVER. When Covid began in March 2020, which was over 6 years ago, it became online courses only. Now, their course availability is STILL mostly online-only, with the exception of 2 or 3 classes. It's a HUGE PITY that KCCLA doesn't welcome back its community of Korean-learners. We used to share meals with the teachers and the office workers and the classmates would chat and network before lessons while sharing a meal. The online courses that are offered by KCCLA are NOT good. I've tried them multiple semesters and they're just not good. Many of the people who take KCCLA's online courses don't even live locally. This used to be a local hub, and now it's online low-quality classes with students who live out of state or out of town. What did the students and community here do for you to be so determined to keep us out and away ?

My wife and I visited the California Science Center to see their Mummies of the World exhibition…read more Luckily we managed to make time in our packed schedules to see the exhibit on the last day it was open - talk about a close call! It had been years since either of us had been to the California Science Center so it was like the first time again. Parking is expensive but entrance to the center is free so that's something. Since it's free, there are hoards of families and kids running in every direction so expect crowds galore! Considering the amount of foot traffic the center gets, it's actually pretty clean so shout out to the cleaning staff! The Mummies of the World exhibition was fascinating to see. You had to pay for this exhibit but it was worth it if you're at all interested in mummies and the dead. Crowd control wasn't the greatest as everyone was kind of crammed inside, but it is what it is. Lots of mummies on display with interesting histories/facts to absorb. We also checked out the free exhibits for Goose Bumps! The Science of Fear and Fire! Science & Safety. Both were pretty interactive with lots of informative fun! I can see why the California Science Center is so popular amongst kids/families - apart from being free, it's very hands-on so it's engaging for the little ones. They have a food court that offers a little bit of everything, so if you have picky eaters in your group you'll be able to find something for everyone. Naturally it's museum food, so it's going to be costly for what it is. If you want some cheaper options, they have food vendors out front and out back offering street dogs and Mexican treats. If you really want to save some money, the museum allows you to bring in outside food and drinks, with the only caveat being that you can only eat/drink in the food court or on the patio outside. The Rose Garden out back is a nice change of scenery if you want to stretch your legs and have some free space away from the crowds. The big fountain as well is nice to lounge around to cool off and take pictures. Overall we loved the California Science Center - it's mostly free, the grounds are well-maintained and spacious, it's interactive, and it's a great way to spend the afternoon while exercising the ol' brain with science. If you want to get a souvenir from your trip, there's a gift shop that has numerous options in every nook/cranny.
