Sloppy's

An American restaurant situated not far from the town centre with it's typical American decor. A…read morefantastic atmosphere with its ultra comfortable leather booth seats, skylight bringing in natural sunlight, even plug sockets for laptop users and free wifi. It also seems the place to watch live sports over a drink and a burger with tv screens on each corner of the restaurant yet it is still very family friendly and service has always been impeccable. In my honest opinion I do believe they serve some of the best American dishes around and can even compete with some of London's favourite diners. Wild wings (cajun) x6 Incredibly moreish and can see myself finishing a higher quantity bucket load. The wing sizes were quite average but very succulent and meaty inside. The cajun spices gave it a nice sweet paprika garlicky flavour and latched on well on the crispy skins of the wing showing that they were well fried, Sloppy Joes Ticked all the boxes for a fantastic burger. First that lovely pillow soft brioche bun, slightly charred so it came warm. Then came the rich tender minced beef fried with onions and peppers in there to give it some texture and boost of flavour. The sauce it came with was generous, with lovely rich sweet and and savoury notes keeping everything moist and juicy throughout. Finished off nicely with a fine slice of cheese, melted perfectly to intensify the umami flavours. Full rack ribs A delicious slab of ribs, keeping its meaty texture and flavours which suggest it was slow cooked the full length of time to tenderise and soften the meat. There was no pre cooking the ribs beforehand here. This allowed the rich BBQ coca cola sauce to penetrate through to the bone whilst reducing in liquid to create a rich and sticky coating around the ribs keeping everythign moist and juicy. A nice light creamy coleslaw on the side to cool things off. Curly fries These were perfectly fried. It had that moreish fluffy inside and crispy outside that was coated in the sweet mild spices which you find collapsing on itself as you chew, sending the rush of flavour through each mouthful. I say mouthful as who just pops one in their mouth per bite, not if they are this good. Chilli fries Not the spicy chilli as I imagined but chilli consisting of a wonderful well flavoured mix of red kidney beans, onions and red peppers in a lovely thick tomato slurry that helped bind the sauce and flavours on each and every chip. Drizzled with sour cream to add a lovely creamy consistency. Very wholesome dish. Sloppy suits every occassion whether it's your quick lunch or a celebration feast. Food has always been fantastic and paired with that is it's lovely bright and spacious atmosphere. Those who can eat a lot like me should definitely go for one of their food challenges. try their Sloppy Joes challenge and knock me down the top of the chart if you can.

Ealing

This nearly got itself 5 stars, but not quite there...yet!…read more Meat & Shake was on my radar as soon as it opened in Ealing, it's near enough my local! We finally got round to giving it a try, and in all honesty I wasn't sure what to expect. The place has mixed reviews, and I had my reservations. I don't think my opinion of a place has changed as quickly as it did here when our starters came out! My doubt turned to joy at the first bite of the hot link sausage, closely followed by an amazing Buffalo wing...I knew we were on to a winner! Mains wise I had spotted one of the best looking ribs I had seen in a long time, so asked the waitress for the same thing. My partner went for a burger and we added chips (with balsamic and mayo)and mac n cheese. The ribs were as stunning as they looked, full of meat, juicy, tasty and all round heaven on a plate. The burger was good, but if you want the best burger in the world go elsewhere. it's the BBQ side of things that make Meat & Shake stand out so I really suggest sticking with that...chicken, ribs, hotdogs etc The chips were amazing, I had never even seen chips with balsamic on before, but after these will be covering them in it in the future! The Mac n cheese was average, nice but in all honesty we didn't' need it...the portions were big and we were pretty stuffed! So food wise this is one of the best meals I have had for the price range it's in, and will 100% be going back. The only thing that really let Meat & Shake down was the service, and it wasn't just us. 3 tables around us were moaning to each other about it as well. The issue wasn't staff themselves, it was clearly there was not enough of them. We waited ages to order, and in the end skipped dessert before I aged another week myself. It's a simple change that would have given this place 5 stars...get some more staff on busy nights, and organise them better! In summary, give this place a visit, and you won't disappointed! Maybe just avoid the hot sauce, as it's lethal!

Was relatively excited to visit this place after the positive Yelp reviews…read more After a 1 HOUR wait the food finally came after watching many people arrive, eat and leave in the time we waited for our food. Thankfully the food was really good. Highly recommend the Hot Links sausage. Most of the bbq sauce stuff is quite fruity which isn't my vibe usually. What really irked me was ordering a bootle of tap water for the table which took 20minutes while the waitress prepped two empty tables with water before us.

I wanted something with at least one good veggie option, they wanted something with meat, and it had to be somewhere in-between Camden and Canary Wharf, not too pricey, and ideally close to the city because otherwise our Italian friend probably wouldn't make it. And lo and behold.... THE FAT BEAR!!! It was all we wanted and more! This place is sort of tucked away and up some stairs above a pub. It's really just a room and a half, which makes it super cozy and they have a pretty awesome looking bar. It's got warm lighting which makes the atmosphere really nice. Their cocktails were delightful and the service was excellent. I will make a very strange observation that someone working there had a very drunk friend who just sort of made herself at home. Then more joined and it turned into me watching this table of really really drunk people trying to order food. Two of them ended up just falling asleep. It was super strange. Anyway, me being distracted aside, I really loved the cocktail I ordered- Sloe Boat To China, and everyone else seemed happy with theirs. I was dying to try the pimiento cheese starter and the fried pickles. The cheese was particularly sharp and delicious. The pickles were good, but quite skinny (I mean come on, you're in an American restaurant I was expecting some serious pickles). The vegan gumbo was super spicy and delicious. I was impressed and enjoyed it. My husband dropped the ball and ordered the regular jambalaya (with sausage) rather than the seafood one which broke my heart a little bit, because I really wanted to try it. You know, I guess that means we'll just have to come back. Oh also another bonus, this place has brisket which is really hard to find. I can't say how it tastes but my friend said he defo approves (am I becoming more British with these words, or just more annoying?) Anyway, to finish it off I had the oreo cheesecake which the bomb. I love oreos. And it tasted like oreo. So all was right with the world. A wonderful place to come if you have people who want to try American food, or if you have out of town Americans who are too scared to try other food, or if you have hungry friends that want to try cajun food, or if you just want to try some really yummy food.

If you are an expat, this will be your new comfort food craving after your first visit. Our group ordered three different sandwiches and shared many brunch dishes and they were all amazing. They serve their buttermilk pancakes topped with bacon and a generous helping of syrup on the side. The eggs benny came with fries and was delish as well. All of their amazing sandwiches come with an individual pickle that is made in-house. We shared a Chicken Cobb (Corn fed chicken, smoked bacon, avocado, blue cheese, boiled egg, tomato, red onion, lettuce & mayo on 3 slices of toasted white), The Toronto (Slow roasted topside beef, melted English cheddar, leaf lettuce, tomato, pickled hot peppers, red onion, & horseradish mayo on toasted sourdough), and The Medley (Roasted turkey breast, smoked ham, bacon, melted cheddar & emmental, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickled hot peppers & basil mayo on toasted sourdough). This place is locally owned and the vibe is very laid back. We went around 12:30 on a Saturday and this place was packed. They take reservations so you might want to make some (we did). Overall, I will definitely come back.

Like most American ex-pats, I'm amazed at how the country that invented the sandwich can't make a…read moreproper sandwich. There are few things in the world less appetizing to me than two pieces of pre-packaged soggy bread with one slice of ham drowning in a gallon of mayo that's been sitting on the Pret a Manger shelf all day. In America you only see stuff like that at gas stations, and even there they hold the mayo. In England, they put so much mayo on those sandwiches that it actually gets listed as an ingredient. So whereas you'd have a chicken sandwich with mayo in America, in England it becomes a chicken mayo sandwich. That's just wrong. And nasty. Enter Pickle & Rye. If this place were in Soho or South Kensington then there'd be lines out the door. True Mortlake is in London's upscale southwest and thus home to several affluent American ex-pats, but I feel like that this gem of a sandwich place is missing out on a golden opportunity by being stuck out in the middle of nowhere. It was a trek to get to even from Fulham, and I've got plenty of friends who think that Fulham is enough of a trek already. Or at least that's their excuse for never coming to visit us. This place would merely have to not completely suck to be one of the best sandwich places in London, but it's really taken the art of the sandwich to another level. The owner / head sandwich dude is a culinary school graduate who roasts all their meats, cures his own corned beef (known around these parts as salt beef), makes his own dill pickles (which are easily the best that I've ever had in England) and Russian dressing, with the result being the finest reuben this side of the Atlantic. I will gladly return to the middle of nowhere for another one.

Purley

I've been here a couple of times now and I've enjoyed my meal all the time!…read moreYou can eat in or take away, the packaging for the takeaway is very nice, the chips come in mini boxes and the burger is in a paper wrap. When you eat in your meal comes in metal dishes with logo under your burger and chips! What I love about this place is the menu is simple, the ingredients are not so simple but mainly you chose what kind of burger ie chicken, beef then you can stop there or add other ingredients and then you can get fries which are not like your normal fries as they are freshly made and taste amazing as there's different toppings, then to top it off you could have a milkshake or an alcoholic milkshake! There are much more items on the menu as they have a brunch menu and dessert! But if your getting a takeaway they are nice enough to let you sit down drink some cold water and enjoy freshly made popcorn! So the beef burger is my favourite as the buns are nice and soft, the burger is a good thick portion which is very juicy - I'm starting to think they must steam the burger as when you bite into it it is just clear meat juice! The sweet potatoe fries are the best and I like to top it all off with a Reece's peanut butter milkshake which is so yummy you can drink the whole thing too quickly but the best bits is the chocolate at the bottom which I grab a spoon and enjoy the scrapings at the bottom of my milkshake! The staff are really friendly and you can place orders at 11.30am every day!

A fun place for families. Food was delicious. My husband had the Steak & Fries I had the caramelized onion Burger, which I believe the cook brought right out to us. The fries were nice and hot. The steak was cooked perfectly my burger could have been cooked a bit longer to prevent so much of the meat juices from dripping. The waitstaff could be more inviting when you come into the restaurant. The first attempt to eat here the waitress apologized and said it would be a 40 minute wait as a trove of people arrived between 5 - 5:30 pm when we arrived. We told her we'd come back another time. Two days later we arrived around 4:30 ish, and the young lady from way behind the counter, without saying hello or welcome, pointed us to a table. Our assigned waitress was pleasant but we had to flag her down twice for more beverages, it wasn't really busy yet and three wait staff were talking amongst each other. In any case if you don't mind this type behavior this place will suit you, but if you're a large group it may be somewhat challenging to be waited on with a professional attitude. Came here for pre-theater anniversary dinner with my wife. The ambiance was somewhere between that of a trendy club and nice bar. There was a mad scientist vibe with the lights being industrial vibe and some metal decor. The music was thumpy and loud enough to remind you it was there. It made me feel a bit out-of-place as somebody well past my 20s, but also a bit cool or being there. You really come here for the drinks. We got the pipe dream, smokey old fashioned, honeypot picante, and one other I can't remember the name of, but which came in a flower pot. The pipe dream and smokey old fashioned were likely the best. Overall the drinks were more visually appealing than traditionally good and the visually appealing ones tended to have ingredients that weren't as top shelf and/or they were just too sweet. Not bad, but disappointing for what we'd hope. The food was the opposite. I had low expectations and the food wasn't amazing, but was better than average. We got the bao buns, crispy duck pancakes, panko halloumi, katsu curry, and hot honey pork tacos. They arranged for it all to come out in time for us to make our theater show, which was nice. The bao buns and pork tacos were probably the best. Neither blew me away, but both were solid. The katsu curry and halloumi were standard of what you might expect. The crispy duck pancakes was maybe as advertised, but it would have been nice to have some moistness or substance to the dug vs. it basically being crunchy salty bits of something. Overall, this wasn't a bad meal, but it wasn't quite what I was hoping for either. We may be back, but we'll probably try other things first.
