Shoot me already: I go to Starbucks... sometimes…read more Let's face it: there are not many spots to meet a friend up for a good cup of coffee in Zug, specially if you fancy something other than the local cafe-creme, or god forbids, you prefer your cappuccino with soy milk. Starbucks arrived to fill a big gap in the market, and during the few years it's been opened, it's managed to become the town's #1 meeting point, always FULL of young people, including many moms with small kids, so be prepared to either be bumped by a stroller or meet the occasional tiny escape artist toddling to your table to say hi. By the way, there is another Starbucks that precedes this one, upstairs in the train station by platform 3, usually much quieter, in case you don't feel like battling the crowds. Free Wi-Fi, comfy inside seating, good coffee and teas, rather nice outside seating, clean bathrooms, smiley (although often overworked) baristas and everything else you've come to expect from Starbucks.

It was fun but also very time consuming, and after that I always needed to go to the local super market or health food shop to get whatever nobody else had. Nowadays this shop is my one stop solution for everything organic, a true farmer's market selling certified produce directly from their own fields. But is has much more going on. You will of couse find seasonal organic fruits and veggies (fresh salads all winter long!), many of them heirloom varieties; herbs, bulk grains, nuts, free range eggs, homemade pasta, meat and poultry, cheese, milk, butter, jams, sirups all of this from their own production or sourced directly from another organic farmers in the vicinity. They sell also health shop staples like teas and tisanes, flours, baked goods, tofu, seitan, oils and even bio soap and detergents. Lately, they have also opened a coffee & tea bar (beautiful, btw!), and in the summer one can sit outside to enjoy the clean air, eat homemade cake. This guys work very hard. Everything they offer is of the highest quality available, and they still manage to keep prices reasonable, sometimes lower than the supermarket. Not that after biting into the juiciest, most flavorful, just-picked tomato of the season you will even care.

I'm a sucker for coffee sack-lined walls, funky old light fixtures and solid wood 'steh cafe' tables. To complete a place, however, one needs great product. That's where, at least java-wise, this place falls short of the mark. Props to the young gal who served us. She was so very nice. I'd like to pay for her to go to barista training school. Having said that, it could be a case of not having the best machines to work with, or, at the very least, not having them in the best working order.

The owner is a friendly and knowledgeable person, which is very important to me when it comes to coffee and tea shops. After all, you're most likely going there to relax and enjoy a great coffee, aren't you? Thus, I can strongly recommend a visit to this lovely place if you are on a stroll through the old city of Zug! For my part, I am definitely going to visit Bob's food store again in the future, be it for the delicious mountain milk ice cream or for the exquisite coffee!

We haven't found any other tea store (even in New York) with such an interesting selection of teas and such friendly, knowledgable staff. Try their herbal mixes. The Solothurn torte is a pastry specific to the region created in 1915. It's a hazelnut cream biscuit that is sweet, crunchy, and delicious!
