In my mind, the perfect cafe perfectly captures the "third place" concept - cozy enough to feel like home. I think the Dutch call that vibe - 'gezellig'. The perfect cafe also has a well-rounded selection of teas, coffees, sandwiches, cakes, and a solid soup of the day. Finally, because I am also slightly basic, the perfect cafe must be insta-worthy from the design of its store to the plating of its food and coffees. Sand's, Cakes and Bubbles is a perfect cafe. From the cozy decor, to the menus hung cutely on clothing hangers, to the beautifully garnished food and drinks, everything about Sand's Cakes and Bubbles is insta-worthy and gezellig to the power of lekker. And yes .. lekker. I have had my share of sandwiches in my lifetime, and the way they balance flavours in their sandwiches at Sand's, Cakes & Bubbles is really jaw-dropping. The second time I came on a Sunday afternoon, and 70% of their cakes were already sold out. They still had the seasonal Winterland Mille Crepe at least, so I ordered that one (although it was also sold out by the time we left). The Winterland has Oreo sprinkles on top and three layers of cream: Jasmine tea, taro, and hazelnut. The crepe had a lovely light and airy texture. I really enjoyed it! Personally, I'm not sure if the long wait and the fact that things are constantly sold out is worth it, especially since their matcha latte was average at best. My tip: If you get a cake, I would opt for unsweetened matcha.
