I was in college then and my caffeine consumption was limited to cheap 3-in-1 "coffee"sachets. I didn't know any better, it was all I could afford and drinking it gave me a quick pick-me-upper, until I started working. I realized why good coffee was called good coffee and why bad coffee is merely a by-product of bad sugar and little caffeine. I learned how to be an economical caffeine connoisseur, this is why up to this day you will never find me buying coffee from those big chain cafes. The reason? And probably my greatest caffeine discovery in life: 18 Days Coffee Roaster. I never buy coffee from any other place. To do so, would be blasphemy as my taste buds have been doing the tango to its Special Blend for the past 5 years. I love it so much that I've made it my go-to pasalubong for family and friends that come home to Manila. Their Special Blend is a must-try. A blend of Arabica, robusta and barako, a cup alone is quite spectacular and you'll never want anything else. The price is excellent too, a medium-sized bag costs P275 and it can sustain 1 person for weeks. So, I say ditch those big coffee chain shops and buy local. Buy from 18 Days Coffee Roaster. Oh and the Manang that roasts the coffee herself is quite the charmer too. I recommend that you chat with her every time you visit.

How about a lounge chair? Yes please! Lots of options for big groups as well. And the coffee? Quite good. Even the black drip was good, not bitter. I don't drink fancy lattes (too much milk and sugar) and other coffee beverages with all kinds of stuff in it. I like the Chemex or V60 type coffees black. If the beans are good, it won't be bitter. They also sell real food as well as pastries and cakes here. I got here when they opened at 7 am, so I was not hungry so I didn't order anything else other than coffee. Unfortunately WiFi is not free. You can join their Rewards program for a nominal fee to get 30 minutes of WiFi and discounts on their drinks. At the CB&TL across the street inside Asian Hospital, they have free Google WiFi so go there if you need it. Next time I'm in Festival Mall, I'll have to stop here again for coffee.

At home in the SF Bay Area, Starbucks is the last option for coffee if there is nothing else available. It is basically dishwater compared to the elixir I've been drinking here for the last month in Manila. Been to several locations but we became regulars at this particular Starbucks in Westgate Mall, located just across the street, about a block away from our hotel. If they served this coffee at home, I'd go back to drinking coffee at Starbucks.

Alabang is slowly gaining more artisan coffee shops but since this is the closest and walking distance to us, this is where we usually end up going to. Interiors are bright, airy and spacious and this branch occupies two floors so it hasn't been difficult to find a table. They have a few parking slots on the side facing Audi while there are other parking spaces available in Westgate. The baristas are nice and friendly while some of them know hubby's go-to drink already -- Reserve Nitro Cold Brew. I tend to change my drink every time we come in though coz variety is the spice of life hahaha! Great place to hang-out, chit-chat and sip a cup of coffee. So glad this is so close to us while we're in town.
Can't believe Starbucks in the Philippines is so good

Located along the south's foodie nest, BF Paranaque, one may have a hard time spotting this coffee gem. This small quaint shop is located on the second floor of a commercial building complex. The place is a perfect for coffee aficionados, as they'll feel at home with the ambiance and vibe of the place. The guy who owns the place himself is a coffee guru, having bagged a lot of local and international awards with his brewing prowess. My absolute favourites are their cold brew (they are the ones supplying the cold brew at Puzzles BGL) as well as the Belgian heartbreaker. It's comfort in a cup. The cold brew has a fresh, crisp taste with the right amount of caffeine kick that coffee lovers love and the Belgian heartbreak hits the right heartstrings that is sure to make your gloomy day bright as the morning sunshine.

For me, this is both a magic-inspired place and a magical place. Once I step inside, I am instantly immersed in its spell, with its walls in different pastel shades, paper cutout-like towering trees, colorful chalk art (The art in the long chalk board on the wall changes. On one Christmas we went the art had a Christmas theme), decoupaged tables, and charming collectibles like masks and bright birdcages. And, there's the gift shop with, yes, magic wands ala Harry Potter, tarot cards and other magical items. And, just look at the menu - there's a shake called Love Potion #29, and an onion soup called Gayuma, among other things! My favorites are Wands In A Cauldron (fresh and crunchy fries in a mini-cauldron) and the Harry Potter-inspired Butter Brew, which is sweet with just the right kick. They also have special drinks just for Christmas, and my favorite is the spiked eggnog.
Charming cafe interiors
Relaxing place to chill.
The chalk art at Mystic Brew changes from time to time. This was the art during one Christmas.

Because you need to stop favoring MEN even when women have been waiting in line to be helped, let alone, PREGNANT WOMEN on Mother's Day!!!! This place made me wait for 20 minutes while I watched them serve men who arrived AFTER ME. What the actual f*ck. I had made my selection after having to demand for assistance since they just chose to ignore me and kept helping MEN who arrived long after me. So rude. So biased. Never coming here again. Going else where to spend my money because the staff at the Molito branch failed to honor the orders in which they were received The flowers were wilted, the staff was frantic, and the flowers are way overpriced. NOT WORTH IT. Go somewhere else. And to the a**holes who saw me there before them and still got served first, shame on you. You're a huge part of the problem & your significant others deserve better than you rolling out of bed and cutting off people in line to get these crappy excuses for bouquets. This is how angry I am. So I was kinda surprised to discover that they actually have a cafe! They also sell chocolates and some other bottled knick knacks like cookie butter. I tried their hot chocolate and their buttermilk chicken during my visit and they were good, although I found them a little pricey. The chicken cost around Php 400, and the serving wasn't really big so I have mixed feelings about it. They offer other beverages like flavored iced and hot tea, too. I dunno, they give me the feeling that I can get the same stuff somewhere else at a much lower price. Still, the ambience and the pretty flowers (that I went crazy photographing) that surround the shop could compensate for the price. In my opinion, at least.
