Flour & Ash - Speck, artichoke, tomato, mozzarella and egg pizza

Flour & Ash is a naughty little pizza joint where they know what they're doing. They've got the…read moremad skills. Mad skills. General ambiance - friendly, inclusive, not at all snobbish about their pizza (although they could afford to be if they wanted to, given the quality). Friendly + unobtrusive staff, but make sure you book way in advance (a week in advance) as it gets fully booked for busy times. For this joint, because the pizzas are so good, I would recommend sharing a few pizzas (say, 2 between 3) so that you get a sample of the range. More variety. We went for the spinach, egg and black olive one and the 3 cheeses. The spinach one was ace. Every bite tasted different. The crust wasn't too doughy, which is often a problem with these pizza places - you feel like you're consuming a whole loaf of bread along with your pizza. It was actually JUICY, which is not an adjective I have ever used to describe a pizza before. Summary: '...and it was good.' The 'Three Local Cheeses' one was also very decent. I like the idea of a 3, not 4 cheeses. That's all Flour & Ash need. You could see and taste all the individual cheeses, too. It wasn't just one conglomerated cheesy mess. The pizza is strong in this one.

I love pizza! I love Gloucester Road. I love Flour and Ash!…read more It's been a while since I've found a small pizza place that I've absolutely loved. There's a few good places to 'grab a slice' in Bristol, but none quite like Flour and Ash. The restaurant is intimately small, with really nice, large windows and a row of tables against each wall and a row a bigger tables through the middle of the restaurant. Now, the pizza. OMG, the pizza! I was lucky enough to go with a few people, so I got to try a slice of a few, but the stand outs for me was the Ox Cheek and the Filler Steak. The Ox Cheek had a béchamel base with Ox cheek and parmesan, which was surprisingly amazing. It wouldn't have been something I normally went for, as it didn't have tomato base, but I saw it on a recent blog post so had to try it. When I go again I'll try something else, but I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't been before. The fillet steak pizza was HUGE! The tomato base was absolutely delicious and the steak was perfect; not at all fatty or gristly! They sell lots of local beers and ciders and they actually had one of the best malbecs I've ever tasted. If you like red wine, you seriously need to try it. Flour & Ash? BIG fan!

If there was a bar that most encapsulated the Bristol spirit then Renatos it is, like Bristol it is…read moreunpretentious but super cool, full of an eclectic mixture of people and run by the same family (The Renato family) for decades. The drinks are reasonably priced and there is always a good selection, in the bar area you can order a pizza which is cooked fresh there and then and they serve the delicious pizza right into the early hours, it's a popular after work, after gig/theatre bar and it is without doubt my favourite bar in Bristol - I hope that in 20 years time I'm still eating pizza and drinking pints of cider in Renatos

Right next to the Old Vic, Renatos is a pin in the map of good places to go in Bristol. With a…read morereally nice atmosphere and fairly cheap prices, open fire in the winter and walls entirely adorned with theatre posters or signed photos of various actors from over the years, this is an excellent bar/restaurant which is really worth a look in. I've frequented it many times, perhaps a few too many whilst I was still at college, and the late night pizzas really are quite a selling point - all night they'll serve the traditional and very high quality pizzas to their gradually drunker clientelle. You can take your pick with seating - there's a comfy room with sofas, and the aforementioned fire, to the left of the bar, or else the main room with the poster wallpapered walls has tables, chairs and benches. Without fail getting a seat is always a bit of an art when I've been here, but that's more part of Renatos' charm rather than a failing. Come here more than once and you'll see the same staff - it's a closely run family business. They also own the restaurant across the road (which has the same name), which is a far more traditional restaurant affair and has a wider variety on the menu than just pizza. Both sides of the road are a must.

PLEASE NOTE: We ordered delivery from The Stable through Deliveroo…read more I was craving pizza and unsure where to get delivery from, but I really liked that The Stable made their fresh sourdough every morning using organic grains from Gloucestershire (and, actually, many of their ingredients are local). Also, they've got several plant-based options, all of which are clearly labeled on their menu. We got two Vegan Margheritas (currently £11.50) because we had heard the pizzas run a bit on the small side. I'm so glad we did; they were extremely thin and maybe the same size as something found in the frozen food aisle at the grocery store! Underwhelming all around: they were not hot upon arrival, and had absolutely no flavor. We're glad we got one each of the dips (currently £1.75; all plant-based): the garlic-herb mayo and the chipotle mayo being my favorites, the BBQ and burger sauce being my partner's favorite. They honestly did all the work for this meal. I'm not sure I would order delivery from here again. I see they've added some new things to the menu since I've last been, I haven't tried the tots yet (and how can you go wrong with fried potato), and I've never dined inside so... never say never, right?
