I think this says more about the men in my life than Star Bar... not one but TWO men have taken me here for dates. Ladies and Gentlemen: you can do better! If you're not on a date however, Star Bar has some good points. Cheap prices, a reliable pub-standard menu (by all accounts, the $10 steak is awesome) and plenty of space if you're in a group. I haven't been in the downstairs area in years (since the first date incident) but upstairs still has lots of the old Planet Hollywood costumes/movie props... which can be a bit amusing. It's pretty dark and dingy... the music is cheesy... there's probably (definitely even) better places nearby with the same prices... but its casual, reliable and totally unpretentious. Star Bar is one of those places you would probably walk past without looking twice. They usually have someone outside with a placard to try and tempt you in to buy what specials they got for the day. The downstairs is basic with a little outdoor area and a pool table. Upstairs has gotten a refurbishment in the past year and a new bistro menu. It's spacious and large upstairs with a dance floor. The menu begins with prices of about $10. Today I opted to try the $10 burger. I opted for the Swiss Moo burger. The burger was an Angus beef patty with cheese and caramelised onions on a brioche bun. The burger took 15 minutes to come out which was too long considering the place was pretty empty. The burger was very nice I will give it that. The BBQ sauce added to the combo and the bun was fresh. Service in this place used to be a lot quicker and the menu offered more specials. read more

Probably better as a cheap no cover charge nightclub on a Saturday night as opposed to a place you would want to have lunch at; well it depends on you. Good quality food and great service; however it might be more preferable to head to nearby Darling Harbour or Chinatown as this side of the city has a lot of cheap quality food outlets as it is. On the nightclub side, great cheap drinks; they don't put too much ice in the midori lemonade's thank goodness, and it is great to have a few games of pool with complete strangers and make good company if you are game enough to do this here. And their restrooms are quite clean, and there generally aren't any issues here. People are well behaved and their security guards appear to be switched on and on the ball in case any issues arise. Otherwise this establishment (formerly Planet Hollywood) does not have the wow factor, although a great cheap hang out spot if you want to go out and save at the same time. Think young people and uni students. Great service, however you can also do a lot better on the nightclub front too in nearby Darling Harbour: Clue: home for instance. read more

Star Bar is usually the place you want to go to if you're pinching at the insides of your pockets, the drinks are THAT cheap. Downstairs has a nice lounging area for groups, with pool tables and flat screen TV's dotted around the place that make you forget about how dark it's getting outside. Been to the Star Bar several times and have never been disappointed. Their cocktails are incredible and their food is reasonably priced and a consistently good quality. Notable mentions are the pork and parmeson meatballs with tooasted ciabatta and the sour apple martinis. It's been 2 months since I've moved to Sydney. Clearly, due to recent changes in the law, Sydney isn't the same. Star Bar was the first bar I explore and often reluctance from friends who have been here since ages made me feel this place isn't what it really is. Now I know why. Coming from India, I am prepared for the impending racism WHEREVER I GO. We have evolved in technology, economy and reached planets but forgot to evolve as humans. I was at star bar on a Sunday night (29th April), drinking my jug of beer and waiting for a couple of friends and half an hour later I get to know that they aren't allowed inside because that said driver's license isn't "AUSTRALIAN" approved. We read the sign that said they will approve drivers license issued in Australia or any other country. My friend had a legit license and the entry man and the manager didn't let us them in because we were Indians. Can you believe it, she said no Indians! She said we can't read the language on valid photo IDs. Agreed. Totally. But the Indian driver's license was written in ENGLISH. We did argue although calmly (the place nearly empty so no commotion as such) because we have been to that place multiples times before. Now, I did get refunded for my drinks but in exchange, the manager snatched the glass of beer from me while I was drinking. I know one or two things about the service industry, but in India, even with the rudest customer, the manager is humble at all times and this time we weren't even rude. Australia now is said to be intolerant towards racist behavior. This certainly wasn't the best example of that. We are the second largest population in the world if you haven't noticed, we are everywhere. I hope you know where I am going with this. Not the fanciest place in Sydney, its more a place to grab a few drinks while chewing on something from the bar menu. They have two floors, where upstairs is more restaurant like and downstairs a bar. You can order food from both floors, but they only have a smaller bar menu downstairs. As often here down under you will grab you food by the counter when its ready. They have specials more or less every day, but strange enough its only downstairs. You cant complain on the location since its right on George street, which gives you a perfect spot walking everywhere. This place will probably do best if you start of a night with some "cheap" read non-expensive drinks and a meal if you are hungry. What can I say about this place. It's a place to meet friends have a light meal (chicken breast is my fav under $10.00 as long as you buy a drink as well (they are very reasonably priced). Much better place to visit after the renovations. The decor has gotten a lot more classy, and the beautifully crafted pool tables are a big plus for my friends and I. House drinks are relatively cheap ($4.20), the upstairs dance floor is average but gets the job done (if not too quiet at times), and noise level at the bar downstairs is not too bad. The bar music's pretty good as well. They'll switch it up a lot but will play those tunes that bring back memories and nostalgia. The only reason I ever set foot in The Star Bar is because it's a handy place to meet friends for a mega-cheap glass of wine before a movie. So i'm only ever there fairly early which suits me just fine. The demographic is pretty eclectic but mainly very young and very drunk with the odd derro taking advantage of $3 happy hour. I can imagine it gets pretty feral late on weekend nights- as George St is wont to do- so I stay far far away then! I do enjoy sitting in the windows watching the craziness of George St buzz on by, and have always had good service here, it's just a little young and clubby for me to even contemplate after 10pm. read more

Went here with my cousins back in November 2016. It's a decent spot but I had no idea Sydney has some stupid lockout rules so by law we couldn't get shots after 12 am. Opposite Event cinemas, which every now and again will have a movie premiere and invite along a celebrity I hear, is the Star Bar. I'm hoping that the name means that the celebrities will come across the road and have a beer with you after one such premiere. As well as a hive of cheap drinks, Star Bar also houses a relatively unknown comedy club by the name of the Comedy Court. How do I know this? Well, I performed there during my ill-fated run as a stand-up comic. I say ill-fated, I never actually bombed, but I never actually performed anywhere else apart from here. Shows are held on Friday and Saturday nights and like most amateur comedy clubs, there tends to be a mixed bag of comics ranging from "what the hell was that?" to "oh my god, I just wet myself" (N.B. I was probably closer to the former). It's also home to the Australian School of Stand Up Comedy, so if you fancy trying your hand at one of the most feared arts but could do with some tips, give it a go! Much like the Pavillion Hotel located next door, most people start the night out here because of the discounted drinks. Everything is reasonably priced and entry is free- for girls anyway! My first experience of stand up in Sydney was through the event that is known as Comedy Court, a weekly event that has the audience judge the comics with an electronic device. No the bad comics aren't tasered by the electro-empowered audience, but they are able to vote with a remote control. The seating in the comedy room is very comfortable, almost to the point of it being a bad thing. (I can't remember where I read it, but the more uncomfortable people are the harder they laugh.) Maybe I'm taking the word uncomfortable in the wrong way, perhaps it's describing social discomfort rather than physical, that would make more sense in the science of laughter. The show is run out of Star Bar, previously Planet Hollywood and the bar still maintains its movie costumes and neon globe. The bar is about as tacky as you would like. The floors are made of velcro it would seem and walking, when in the Star Bar, becomes trudging. After 11pm the dinner tables are moved to the side of the restaurant and a laser show entices all the fresh faced youths to stop talking and start disco boogying. Downstairs is always full of people and for one reason or another I associate this hotel with the concept of just turning eighteen and not knowing what are the good bars and what are the bad bars. Be prepared for the bouncer at the door to aggressively ask you how many drinks you've had before he even looks at your ID, and he will ask you where you had it, when you had it, and all these irrelevant questions. As that wasn't enough, I was casually walking through the bar and was held from the back from a bouncer who did the same thing to me 30 minutes later! I felt like I was being interrogated for a crime. DJ was okay, but the dance floor was pretty big. No drinks allowed on the dance floor so you have to finish them on the side. Decent steak for a bargain price. The place itself is very large. Looks like it could have been a discotheque in the late 70's-80's. They usually have some sort of steak special of the day but there are several different steak options on the regular menu. Honestly I can remember what else they have because I've had steak there twice. It also came with a side, chips I believe. There's a full bar so just about anything you want to drink. You order from the bar and they give you a disc that lights up when your order is ready to pick up from the kitchen at the back of the bar/restaurant. To whom it may concern, Incident star bar 30/01/20. I would like to express my concern with a couple of people that attended the star bar last night and are generally there all the time by the looks of it! I only generally pop in monthly but what happened last night stressed me out and was very upsetting for me. I was on the verandah area for a little while minding my own business and chatting to some tourists and my backpack went missing, so of course I freaked out as it had my wallet in it, keys, work keys, 1800 dollar iPhone house keys etc you name it my whole life. I then informed staff and the manager whoever she was that was on duty told me to call the police but because I was in panic, I was walking around trying to find it. Around half an hour later a guy that normally hangs on the veranda came back with it on one shoulder, I was furious and in shock and upset I just grabbed it off him and said why do you have my back I then proceeded to the train station, checked inside and luckily nothing was missing in it. He cannot get away with this. So, I made my way back to door where the manager and security were said you found your bag so leave. I said I think you should call the police, they said you can. They simply dismissed me as if I was criminal whilst the guy who took my bag most probably thought it was funny that this happened and continued to drink with his buddies and made fun of me. The security guard on last night and manager all dismissed me, and he didn't get punished for his actions. Can you please investigate this for me I was treated highly unfairly, and I have pictures of the guys as well as the security but not the manager? that was shockingly rude to me and let the thief continue to drink on the verandah with his mates while I walked away in shock and disbelief. Prior to this I used to love to come to the Star Bar after a quick Thursday night shop, but I cannot rest now as I was treated so unfairly, and I did nothing wrong other than freak out because my property was taken from me and the security and manager on last night ridiculed me, hurt and upset. The only good thing about this place is the inexpensive drinks and location in the heart of the city. It's OK for a drink or two after work, but definitely not the place to be towards the later part of the night. Towards the later part of the night the crowd gets for the lack of a better word, 'ghetto' and the music wasn't great either. It was mostly 1990- 2000's hip hop and pop but not in the nostalgic kind of way, but rather cheesy and 'way-behind-the-times' kind of way. I enjoy hip-hop and pop too but this wasn't it. The atmosphere was nice. Upon entering we could tell this was a grill by day and club by night. We stopped in because we noticed a sign that said Lunch specials, which looked pretty good. I was really looking for fish and chips. We sat at a table wondering if a waitress was going to come by. Not the case. We then went up to the bar and was greeted by a not so friendly bartender who mostly just nodded his head at us. We ordered a burger and chicken burger and two beers which came out to roughly $55. After we sat down we weren't sure how we got the food since the bartender gave us no information. I walked back up to the bar and asked, you get it yourself I was told. Then I asked where were the $12.50 lunch specials since I didn't see them on the menu. We were told that you have to ask for them, they will not tell you. What we ordered was on the lunch special and we were charged $18 for each which I then told the bartender that is what we ordered why didn't we get the lunch special price, I was then told because we didn't ask. REALLY!! That is how you run your business. The food was OK but definitely not work the $18 price. It really wasn't about the price but more about how rudely we were treated and having to ask for the specials which as tourist how are you to know. Not impressed! We won't be going back. read more
