FKO also frequently brings in visitors to provide unique enrichment experiences, which were always a highlight for our daughter. Jerice, the owner, does an incredible job creating a true sense of community among the families. As a family new to Saco, FKO was such a wonderful way for us to make connections and feel at home in our new hometown. Our daughter started at FKO as a toddler and is leaving as a confident, capable, and responsible little girl. She has had so many wonderful experiences and opportunities during her time there, and we are incredibly grateful for all that FKO has given her. The teachers are absolutely amazing and care so deeply for the children. Knowing that our daughter was in such loving and capable hands each day made heading off to work so much easier. We always felt confident that she was safe, cared for, and having fun while she was there. I truly can't say enough wonderful things about FKO. Cheverus is, in my opinion, the best high school in the state. Maybe MSSM has better math and…read morescience. Maybe public school doesn't have religion class. But Cheverus is a great mix of good arts, good math & science, and good sports. The teachers really enjoy teaching at Cheverus. Most of them take pay cuts to do so. The religion teachers also never forced Catholicism (or protestantism) on students. it was all very academic, and the religion teachers were actually open minded - they taught what the church says and then their opinions or alternative opinions.

With less than 36 hours till I was due to move into the dorms, at 4:50pm on a Friday. They surprise me with a list of documents I need to provide before I can move into the dorms. Many from the Doctor's office which will obviously be closed on the weekend. While the school staff also being impossible to get a hold of on the weekend. Making it impossible to attend, or even talk to the school about the problem. And keep in mind, I wasn't some last minute student. I started the paperwork in August! So they had plenty of time to let me know of these essential requirements prior to now. Absolute nightmare experience. I would never consider dealing with SMCC again!

I have had the chance to study flamenco in various places I've lived (in Vancouver, Houston, NYC, and Andalucia) and not all flamenco teachers and studios are alike. It is really challenging to find flamenco teachers in the U.S. who keep their teaching connected to the culture and spirit of the dance as it is danced in Andalucia AND at the same time push you technically. Lindsey spent a lot of time studying and performing in Sevilla and still travels there to study and keeps connections with teachers there and brings them to Portland for workshops. Flamenco is an immensely challenging (and rewarding!) dance and Lindsey is brilliant at providing just the right supportive atmosphere for learning and trying new movements, while still pushing you beyond what you think you can do. I also love the community of people attracted to studying here, it is a great group of lovely women and men of all ages and I leave every class with a huge smile on my face. It is hard to describe how amazing it feels to get to move like you do in flamenco and how empowering and fun it is to be a percussionist with your feet for an hour and a half! There is currently a regular weekly beginner's class, intermediate class, and an intermediate lab, no experience necessary!

First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in South Portland is a great place to connect…read morewith God's spirit. Young, old, male, female, tall, short, thin, fat, rich, poor - no matter who you are and where you are on life's journey, you ARE welcome there. It's a large building and large congregation, but you quickly feel like a member of the family. FCCUCC SoPo offers 2 worship services most Sundays (just 1 in July & Aug). First service is held in Chapel at 8:30. It's a less formal style service. The other service is held in the Sanctuary and starts at 10 am. This service is complete with choir and other musical offerings as well as scripted prayers. Child care is available at the 10am service and Sunday School takes place at that time also. There are currently 2 pastors on staff, both of whom help the congregation take a look at being a christian in this day and age. Many social clubs, and various activities are sponsored by this church.
