Beginner and advanced students training standing grappling tactics in 8pm Monday night competition class.

Standard Jiu Jitsu is hands down the best gym in the DMV. Coach Greg Souders has devised and successfully implemented an ever evolving training program that distills Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Submission Grappling to its nature as a systems based approach to combat. Greg employs a constraints-led approach to learning and keeps up to date with the latest accepted research in skill acquisition, and it shows in his amateur white belts through professional blackbelts, from training room to world level competition mats. Progression is well measured according to the pace and intensity the practitioner chooses to delve into the art in Beginners, All Level, and Competition classes. Students are treated with respect and offered equal opportunity for direct attention from Greg. The training environment is kept clean and features new mat space and a fully equipped strength and conditioning area. Standard Jiu Jitsu is a no nonsense, direct, calculated, fair, and equitable training environment, and anyone serious about their martial arts practice is doing themselves a disservice training anywhere else.

I may not have a lot of experience in BJJ, and I've only been to a few other gyms, but Standard BJJ is something special. Originally I had never been in this environment before, but Greg and everyone else in the gym were extremely welcoming when I first joined. Stepping on the mat for the first time, especially as a girl, can be intimidating, but I never felt like that at Standard BJJ. Not to mention these classes are by far the hardest yet most rewarding workouts I've ever had. As an instructor, Greg is amazing. He's certainly helped me improve my game, and he's an amazing resource to learn from, when it comes to jiu jitsu or otherwise. Anyone looking for a gym in the area should check this place out.

He already encountered enough situations in the first grade where we decided he needed to learn abilities to stand up for himself and develop self confidence. We wanted him to learn and experience what it means to be a part of a team, how to strengthen yourself from within, never get discouraged, learn from each other, how it's ok to stand up for yourself, etc. Native has become part of our daily lives now and we couldn't be happier with the impact on Logan's development physically and mentally. Logan takes regular classes, competition classes and private lessons and he loves every minute of it. He looks forward to his time at Native. Can't wait until we get our youngest to start! Native's culture of family, discipline and respect is exceptional. We LOVE each Coach, Mariely, and all the Family and kids who train at Native. When you're at Native, it's not just about your kid. It's about ALL of our Native kids inside and outside the mats. This is something that another Parent friend shared with me at Logan's first competition, that I will never forget! GO NATIVE!

When traveling to Gaithersburg for work, I saw there was an academy reasonably close to where I was staying. Professor Noel was incredibly hospitable and encouraging for me to attend the classes. The academy itself is very clean throughout. The drilling or fundamentals classes were great in that they're both a good working and emphasizing drilling technique to perfection (drillers make killers as the saying goes). The advanced class that I attended immediately applied to something I've struggled with. With the requisite rolling, I found the students calm and technical with their sparring habits. Finally, the students themselves - across the belts - were friendly and inviting. I would definitely visit again as well as recommend Foundry Jiu-Jitsu as a place to train if you live in the area.

Great and knowledgeable instructors. Wonderful introduction for children to teach them discipline, respect, and being gentle with self and others. The instructors (Chris and the two Seans) teach a very modern approach to BJJ. Instead of just showing a position, practicing it a few times, and then sparring, they have us play games to really drill in the position and how it connects to the overall picture. I have found this style to be extremely beneficial as a beginner who is still trying to understand the fundamentals. One of my favorite things about the gym is the strong sense of community. On Thursdays we go out to a Mexican restaurant after class and travel to other gyms. Enrolling my kids in the kid's program at ABJJA Abmar Barbosa Jiu‑Jitsu Academy has been one of the best decisions we've made as a family. From day one, what stood out immediately was the standard of care. Hygiene and cleanliness are clearly non-negotiable here. The mats, the space, the routines, everything reflects deep respect for the kids' health and safety. As a parent, that peace of mind matters more than words can say. This is, without question, the best kids BJJ program in the area. The class flow is incredibly strategic, thoughtfully structured, developmentally appropriate, and somehow still pure fun. My kids are engaged the entire time. They're learning discipline, body awareness, confidence, and resilience while having a blast. What truly sets ABJJA apart is the environment. It is warm, safe, and deeply supportive. The coach-to-student ratio is impressive, and it shows. Every child is seen. Every child is guided. The coaches go above and beyond; not just teaching technique, but encouraging effort, kindness, and growth. The support given to the kids feels personal, not transactional. The community here is something special. It's welcoming, respectful, and values-driven. You can feel that this academy cares about raising strong humans, not just good athletes. And finally, value. The class options, the access, the level of coaching, and the overall experience make this an incredible value for money. You get far more than you pay for. If you're a parent searching for a martial arts program that prioritizes safety, excellence, character, and joy, this is it. We feel incredibly grateful to have found ABJJA. My boyfriend was going to this gym and recommended it to me. With covid going on, I was scared of taking my brother to such activities. However, I was worried for nothing. This gym takes such great precautions with the pandemic. My brother loves coming here and looks forward to it every week. I personally never took a class here, but I would observe on the sidelines when taking my brother. I really recommend this gym and jiu-jitsu practice in general. I have much respect for this gym. The coach: He is a great teacher and especially with kids. He explains moves very well for kids to understand. He teaches discipline and yet still makes it fun for them. The coach offers private classes, which we have been doing until kid's classes open back up. My brother really enjoys his sessions with the coach and other members of the gym. My brother was awkward at first, but as classes went by, he became more comfortable. My brother would talk about his coach and what moves he taught him--shares stories about his new friends and uncles. Pandemic Precautions: Everyone wears masks during sessions. The coach would also sanitize in between sessions. There is hand sanitizer available. They are also temperature checks among arrival. Parking/Locations: The parking is limited in front of the gym. There are many spots to park though. There is additional parking at other Buisness's. Its located in a Neighborhood with lots of mini shops and studios. The gym: It is pretty spacious for private sessions, in regards to big classes. The gym max occupancy would seem to be about fifteen people. The is a bathroom available. Mats are laid out very spaciously. Classes are about an hour. Scheduling classes are very flexible. The gym is closed on Sundays.
