I took a beginner class with my boyfriend last month. Greg is an excellent teacher and the vibe is very welcoming and invigorating! The classes are tough, but you learn a lot. Hoping I can take more classes in the future, but it's pretty far from me unfortunately! read more

There's no better BJJ gym in the DMV and arguably in the US. The only other schools that produce this level of fighter are B Team and New Wave. If you want an atmosphere full of dedicated, focused people- this is the place. I switched from another local gym and my game has improved significantly in a fraction of the time. Greg is a wizard and an amazing coach/ person. read more

My son used to train here in the youth classes. I always liked the place and thought the coaching was great. Greg was very cool and easy to deal with. My kid trained for over 6 years at schools in MD & VA and this is def one of the top places around for instruction and one of the very few places I'd bring my kid back to train at again. read more

Travelling from the UK and thought I'd see how the Americans beat each other up. I trained at one place earlier in the week and came here for a change of pace - this place is the bomb. * A black aesthetic that just screeches hardcore dungeon training. * Fantastic coaching that focuses on live training. * Super friendly training partners. If you have to train anywhere then train here. Brad is a fucking beast. read more

Just an update now, a year later. I found out I was pregnant shortly after joining. Greg has experience working with pregnant students, so he was able to help me continue training safely up until the very end. The other students were amazing throughout the pregnancy and never made me feel like I was an annoyance or hindering their training. Now, eleven weeks after giving birth, they are helping me get started all over again. I've trained at places before that had a lot of talk about how they want more women to train there and want to be more "female-friendly." This place doesn't talk about it - they just do it. read more

Standard Jiu Jitsu is hands down the best gym in the DMV. Coach Greg Souders has devised and successfully implemented an ever evolving training program that distills Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Submission Grappling to its nature as a systems based approach to combat. Greg employs a constraints-led approach to learning and keeps up to date with the latest accepted research in skill acquisition, and it shows in his amateur white belts through professional blackbelts, from training room to world level competition mats. Progression is well measured according to the pace and intensity the practitioner chooses to delve into the art in Beginners, All Level, and Competition classes. Students are treated with respect and offered equal opportunity for direct attention from Greg. The training environment is kept clean and features new mat space and a fully equipped strength and conditioning area. Standard Jiu Jitsu is a no nonsense, direct, calculated, fair, and equitable training environment, and anyone serious about their martial arts practice is doing themselves a disservice training anywhere else. read more

Absolutely outstanding instruction. Among the very best in the area. I can say this because I have observed instruction as a parent at a good number of BJJ schools in the area. Standard Jiujitsu - My daughter and a team mate training together at Standard BJJ - Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Near Me - Rockville, Maryland

I may not have a lot of experience in BJJ, and I've only been to a few other gyms, but Standard BJJ is something special. Originally I had never been in this environment before, but Greg and everyone else in the gym were extremely welcoming when I first joined. Stepping on the mat for the first time, especially as a girl, can be intimidating, but I never felt like that at Standard BJJ. Not to mention these classes are by far the hardest yet most rewarding workouts I've ever had. As an instructor, Greg is amazing. He's certainly helped me improve my game, and he's an amazing resource to learn from, when it comes to jiu jitsu or otherwise. Anyone looking for a gym in the area should check this place out. read more

I am active duty military and have been training since 2009. One of the first things I was told by Greg the head instructor is that he does not charge people from out of town and that I was welcome to come in and train with his students as often as I would like while like while there. Greg took the time to sit down with me personally and discuss his approach and philosophy regarding the study of Jui Jitsu. I cannot tell you Greg how much I appreciate your time , your honesty and your dedication. His students are well rounded, polite and welcoming. I had really planned on checking out a few different schools in the area while I was there but was so impressed with the quality of instruction that I had no desire to go anywhere else. This place is all around solid and I took a lot away from my time there. Thanks Greg read more

My son loves it at standard. He is the youngest in his class, made dad a little nervous, but everyone is super nice to him and helpful.

Came by to check it out and despite all the good reviews and great things I've heard, it was a pretty hostile environment. Greg was not welcoming and was beyond disinterested. The guys were great but the fact that I felt like I was being pressured to sign up or gtfo made me question why this has so many high reviews. Better Jiujitsu schools than this all over the area, don't waste your time. read more

I'm a visitor from out of town and had some great training sessions with the beasts here. Greg Souders provides exceptional instruction and runs his classes in the most efficient way I've ever encountered. The class begins with learning the technique, then gradually escalated into position specific drilling, then training, and finally sparring, all with the focus on the technique of the day, which always fits in with the theme of the week. The warm up is built into the instruction and training and can be applied directly with the technique being taught, which is a breath of fresh air compared to the typical running around the mats, jumping jacks, and endless shrimping that most schools typically do. If I lived in this area, this would be my go to gym. read more

Greg is an amazing instructor: incredibly nice, really thorough, helpful, and very knowledgeable (black belt!). The students here are also great. The class sizes are big enough so that there are people at every level but small enough so that each student can receive individual support. When i met the owner Greg Souders 4 years ago, we were both purple belts (hes a black belt now) at the time and i was at a different academy. I learned we were far from peers in terms of BJJ skill, experience, and teaching ability. In 20 minutes of routine post training technique talk, he adjusted my game that i saw immediate, and permanent improvement. There was something special about him. Whether you are just a casual practitioner/hobbyist/beginner or a serious competitor hungry to get on the podium, Greg can help you reach your goals. The way he articulates the science that is the art is almost where you would have had to have had a lobotomy to not pick up what he is explaining. Details intricacies of the movements, and then can retroactively return to the core mechanics of the technique and its general concepts/goals. What is amazing is its more than that. Under his guidance, you are "learning how to learn." He teaches you how to focus efficiently, pushes you to expect more from yourself. Not an atmosphere of authority, but an atmosphere of logic. Greg teaches every class, no exception, with an unmatched structure that is designed to always minimize diminishing returns. I have yet to hit a brick wall since I started training. Its been 13 months. Still a purple, but the improvement has been exponential. He has accomplished the very difficult task of creating a healthy culture of constantly trying to improve your skill. Choosing lineage is the best decision i have ever made for my training. read more

I have over 15 years of law enforcement and security experience.
