Irchester Country Park - Eep! Dino-land

We hoped it would stop raining for a bit...and it did although we did still get soaked during most of our walk! Despite the rain, the waterlogged paths and the grey skies, we still had a pleasant walk. This park used to be an ironstone quarry, so there are pretty trails through the mixed woodland...with large peaks and troughs where people have dug up iron over the centuries. I really want to come back with my nephew and niece...they would love it! Other awesome-ness * We found some fake dinosaurs along one of the trail (!) * There is a railway museum (only open once a week on a Sunday, but apparently it's brilliant for train-loving kids) * There is a fun looking playground for kids, as well as rope bridges, zip lines and cargo nets for big kids * It costs £2.50 to park, but there is no entrance fee. If it is a rainy day, take some wellington boots and a rain coat...you'll love it.

Not enough for a whole day out but would make a nice afternoon out for all and a nice summer evening out for all.

I used to trot around here as part of my training when I competed in the London Marathon - highly recommend, gets you in a great head space as you take in all the different views of the water. Walking, cycling & dog walking are other activities you can do,to name just a few, there is also *depending on the seasons a Rutland Water Aqua Park - but make sure you pre book as this is very popular. Normanton Park Church is a tourist hot spot as well as a Zoo! & a man made beach. There are plenty of cafes & children's play areas, with rock climbing (Rock Block). Hambleton peninsula is worth a visit with local pubs dotted around Rutland Water. We live near here & I think most Rutlanders will admit that they don't use the area as much as they should. Although we will be taking a wander to take a look at the new Sea Dragon which has just been unearthed

Great well conserved park…read more This is basically a large man made resevoir, underneath which is a village that was covered over with water when they made the resevoir. Great place for canoing and other water Sports. Many people hire cycles out or bring there own to go around the water, it quite a ride but makes a nice day out. Also great for walks, feeding the ducks, there is also a marina area and in the summer there are boat trips. Food is expensive so better to bring a picnic or packed lunch

I go there at least once every summer, even though it means three hour drive from London. The beach is a part of Holkham Hall and Estate, and boasts miles and miles of sandy shores, sand dunes and unspoilt nature. I can't think of a better place to relax and unwind, with picnic basket in hand. I make a point of visiting during the week, as there is hardly anybody about, so the feeling of peace and tranqulity is even heightened. With sun on my face, warm sand under my feet, ocean waves rolling to and fro, and occasional horse rider for company, one can only think of one word to describe the feeling - bliss. The entrance to the beach is lined with pine trees, which add a special feel to the place. It is hard to tear yourself from the beach once you are there, although the nearby Holkham Estate is definitely worth visiting too. There are parking facilities at the beach entrance, as well as Holkham Hall itself, at a very reasonable rate.

You will have to pay for this parking. There is no other way to access this beach. You can park in the village but you risk annoying the villagers and you will have to cross a very busy and dangerous road. Park as close down the car park as you can. Once you leave your car and go across the cattle grid you are in for a very, very long walk. With little kids it can take easily 20-25 minutes to walk. You must take everything with you - there is a cafe at the bottom of the car park for you to stock up - because you won't want to return before the end of the day. There are no amenities or lifeguard on the beach. So you'll end up like a pack horse and leave room to carry one of the kids back! Also wear beach shoes. On the tourist information it will talk about the sandy beach. Well, it is sandy but with lots of stones and razor shells in it! When you get onto the beach you will love the vast expanse of it. No-one will be on top of you. You can walk for miles if you want. It's the ideal recreation beach. The water is cold but it is clean and realtively shallow. Leave enough energy for the walk back!

With our small children we tend to take the route that includes all the fantastic wooden play sculptures. This means every few hundred yards or so you come across a wooden rabbit, bird, squirrel and so on designed to be explored with slides, fireman poles, ladders etc This keeps them going all the way round and they have a lot of fun. There are also some fantastic cycle routes available, different trails according to the level of difficulty. If you are a seasoned mountain biker you may wish to bring your own bike, on the other hand if you just want to have a taste of what it is like there are bikes available for hire by the hour or longer. We hired some once with a kids trailer fixed to the back of the bike and our girls loved it! There is a lovely open grassy area near the High Lodge Visitor Centre where you can play your own ball games too. We have been with a large party before and had a great day here using that area, hiring the barbecues to cook our lunch on and exploring the adjacent adventure play area. The centre itself has a gift shop and largish restaurant if you don't feel like bringing a picnic. There is a small charge of £6 to enter Thetford Forest if you park at High Lodge. Well worth it when you consider a family can have a brilliant day out for that amount!
