November 2021 Update: Sadly, American and most foreign tourists cannot visit Boiler right now…read more Boiler is back to only accepting the EU digital pass. So only those vaccinated in the EU (or in countries who've joined the EU COVID pass system) can enter the club. This regulation is silly, because tourists must be fully vaccinated to travel to Germany. German goverment border authorities and all hotels accept foreign proof of vaccination, so it's strange that Boiler and some other places (like Lab.oratory) won't. If you ever do get to visit, this place is clean, sharp, and fun, one of the best gay bathhouses in the world, if not the best. Boiler puts our outdated, dusty, clunky, overpriced American bathhouses and sex clubs to shame. Whole setup is savvy, smart, and full of nice touches, starting with the digital watches that lock and unlock lockers. The hygiene/douching stations are brilliant. And you don't have to pay for rooms (cabins), just use them as needed. Just like any gay space, sometimes the guys are friendly, sometimes standoffish. Going alone can be intimidating if you're shy or very insecure about rejection. And you will face rejection more often than not at Boiler, as in most gay spaces, unless you check all the Sean Cody / Bel Ami model boxes: young-looking, white features, and fitness body. So consider bringing a friend or two as an emotional safe space. The lukewarm whirlpool is the only complaint, besides the current COVID rules barring most foreign guests. Would be 5 of 5 stars if they had a true hottub.

I was in Berlin for a few days and looking for a relaxation experience that would not take too…read morelong. I stumbled upon the Liquidrom and was intrigued to try it out. I started out with a massage (which was interesting because I don't speak any German and the massage therapist didn't speak any English!). Needless to say, the massage wasn't the best ever since I couldn't really tell the massage therapist what I wanted. The actual main room with the saltwater pool is pretty cool. There are pool noodles there to grab and then you float on them and listen to the chill music being piped in to the pool. I took one star off because I didn't like that I had to pay extra to borrow towels and a bathrobe while I was there. It was a unique experience at the Liquidrom and I really liked going there to relax in the large pool!

I am back in Berlin for the week and decided to treat myself to a few spa experiences. During my…read moreresearch I honed in on 2 spas in particular (and I'll write a review for both) - Liquidrom and Vabali. I went to Vabali first, and Liquidrom second. Liquidrom: The pool is within a quick walk from the U Bahn. It's a cool building (though the spikes belong to Tempodrom, not the pool portion). Upon checking in and getting changed in the locker room, I felt like it was basic, but functional. Their shower gel in the showers is nothing special or premium, but it works. Once showered, you enter a long hallway. And this is where the confusion begins. There is not a lot to do here. It's bizarrely disjointed since it's partially clothed partially nude. The clothed portion is the salt water pool. This is what you're paying €22.50 for 2 hours for. It's one pool (and I guess a tiny outside pool to sit in, but you'll mingle with nude people from the spa, if you're expecting to stay clothed). I think this whole space would make a lot more sense if they don't upcharge you for the spa, but make it one holistic no clothing experience for the full pool and spa. The pool itself is decent. It's moody with LED lighting and music playing. But it's not really that big. And it's circular, so I am not really sure what you're supposed to do here for 2 hours. It's the only thing you've payed for (other than optional massages and whatnot). Anyway, over to the Spa I went. €2.50 upcharge (once) and you're in through the turnstiles. And again I am confused. Where are you supposed to put your swim trunks? There are open lockers, but I saw a few people schlep their garments around all the time. In the spa. you have 4 saunas. 2 of which are pretty nice (the Aufguss Sauna at 90c and the Kräutersauna (I forgot the temp). The other two are a steam room and a 60c salt room (that I found to be kinda useless. It was not warm enough really to do anything). I was able to join one infusion in the Aufguss sauna, and that was hot and decently nice. The issue I was having (and the reason I only got to do one) is that signage and clocks are not super obvious. Apparently they only do these once per hour at the full hour. I got there shortly before 10am. I would've liked to at least have a chance to join the 10am one, but I didn't know, nobody tells you anything, and signage is hidden right by the Sauna, so deeper into the spa. I left after reaching the 2 hour mark, since I didn't want to pay for 4 hours (which is charges you if you go over). I won't come back. I think this place is crazy expensive for what you can do here. The spa facilities are confusing and not that great. Going to Vabali is not that much more expensive, but you get SO MUCH more. Don't bother going here, seriously, just don't.

Other than that, it's just women all day errday. I got the exfoliating scrub and massage. It was one of the best add-ons I could have asked for -- especially that massage! I feel like the massages in Germany are much different compared to that of the US? There's somewhat of a physiotherapy approach that you would find more or less at a clinic in the USA. Anyway, you can bring your own bathing suit or go around nekked. It's up to you, it's a judgment free zone and those Germans are very accepting of everyone you know! You're given a locker, and you can choose to get some towels and sandals for a small fee. There's also a shower, a dry sauna, wet sauna, and cooling room. I pretty much did everything I could in the 3 hours paid for. After you are done, dressed, and return your things (if you rented anything that is), you can relax in the front area with some Turkish tea. I slept sooo good that night. Can't wait to go back!

I really appreciate that. They really don't see anything sexual about the experience. The sauna on Schoenhauser was known as a "wellness lounge". You enter the facility, and you are given a key to a locker, and a towel. You go into your gender's changing room, strip down completely and put your clothing in a locker, emerging with only a towel. From there, you wander into one of the saunas, placing the towel on the wooden seat. Forget the towel, and you'll most certainly be corrected by one of the attendees of the proper protocol. Germans are very polite, but they won't hesitate to tell you when you are breaking the rules. If you are lucky, you'll get to experience the Aufguss ritual, in which an attendant will come into the sauna once everyone is seated, pour water on the hot stones to create steam, and then expertly whip a towel around to hit each person in the face with the hot steam. I'll never understand the point of the ritual, just that it appears to be an essential part of the Germany experience, and I didn't want to deny myself this experience. An hour later I leave the wellness lounge, fully refreshed and warmed up - the hangover from last night now a distant memory.
