Kinda a weird place, or at least not what I expected walking in. It's a typical bar downstairs, tables and service and whatnot. I saw a map diagramming the joint and indicated the restaurant up the spiral staircase. Upstairs was more chill. A few tables, open kitchen. Understated. The server (only one as far as I could tell) greeted me quickly. I was first offered a drink and a snack. The snack was 5 different things, I could not do them justice. There was a bowl of rocks and a pinecone involved. Eccentric but yummo. Then he informed me about the "surprise" menu, and basically said they could do whatever I want but they like the surprise. We went with a large group (20+) to De Waag for a work dinner. Great location, great setting and a very friendly and good service. A three course menus with choice was available (tuna or veal, sea bass or beef and tarte tatin or cheese). The food was fantastic, the wine, chosen by the restaurant, very nice and suitable. Uh yeah. Not so good. In general Dutch culture is pretty rigid and in turn customer service is totally lacking - this restaurant is the broad illustration of just that. The menu at STW is set up in an odd way. The main menu indicates a 3-course special (for €27) and then has 3 courses outlined right next to it - appetizer, main, desert. A gf and I told the waitress we wanted the 3 course special if they had steak. She said they DID have steak on but on a separate menu. We clarified we could get the steak as part of the special and then ordered it then proceeded to order the appetizer and desert from the main menu. Well now you can probably guess what happened.... maybe. It's not that the steak wasn't part of the special. It's that the appetizer and the desert weren't part of the 3 course meal!!!! When the bill shows up it's €96, charging separate line items for each food item (no special). When I bring this to the managers attention I'm told that the 3 course menu is not the main menu. It is, in fact, the one that had the steak on it. The waitress is sorry, they understand it wasn't clear, they acknowledge that we said the 3 course meal and that the waitress didn't clarify when we ordered stuff off the wrong one, but "f-you". You ate it you bought it. The appetizer was nasty (which I DIDN't eat) and I rarely eat desert so got duped into overpaying about €30. 1 star for you a-holes. read more

Fabulous, amazing place. A great setting in a fab old building in delft, it's ok to sit outside but the atmosphere is to be found inside, sit by the window overlooking the canal and the kitchen to seethe amazing attention to detail that goes into what is essential gastropub food. Went three times in a weekend and had nothing less than excellent. The quiche, vege with feta and squash and a crumble topping of nuts was excellent and fresh flavoured. Their signature dish is a duck sandwich, pan seared duck on a layer of spring onion, covered in duck roulette, two day marinaded in hoi sin and lightly coated with miso mayonnaise. Just amazing sandwich and a meal in itself. Their burgers are top notch and all fresh bread baked on site contributes to wondrous sandwiches of all kinds. Steak is succulent and well cooked, the lamb dish is tender and packed with flavour. After all this the desserts have such attention to detail and originality in them. The fresh pineapple crumble and ice cream with fruit coulis was exquisite . In London you would pay double the price at least for food of this quality and such good service. Best dinner ever in Delft. Surprise 3 course vegetarian menu. What is really fantastic here is that the kitchen and staff are truly dedicated to the satisfaction of the guest, not some concept of gastronomy. The food is simply fantastic. Stopped by for lunch while on a day trip to Delft. The tomato basil soup was sublime. My dining companions had the soup of the week - and I'm afraid I don't recall what it was, but they really enjoyed it as well. Add to that a plate of smoked cheese with mustard dip and wonderful, light textured bread for dipping and it really hit the spot. Washed it down with a very nice citrusy/peach style Chardonnay. If you're ever there it's located behind the Stadhuis in the Markt area. Worth finding. read more

Came to Delft for a sidetrip and after a day of walking around town wanted a light lunch/snack before catching the train back to Amsterdam. This was recommend in Rick Steves for the interior (which was very fittingly decorated for the town and nice for a fall day). We sat upstairs and shared a tomato soup and fries. Both were good, nothing amazing. Pricing was fine for what it was and glad it wasn't overpriced for being a touristy spot. Service was very mediocre (not attentive but polite) as we found in most places. read more

The waitresses don't wash their hands after they have visited the toilet. They lack cutivation. Some of them wear large golden earings and are wearing their dirty aprons so tight that the fat is jiggling over the edge of it. Also they send away customers that look too gay for them. read more
