I also visited a lot of stadiums where the tenants were not in the top division, some of which now are higher. Touring all of the stadiums is something I do whenever I go to a new country, and I find it very enjoyable. Germany has some of the best stadiums in Europe, which makes sense because its league and supporters are some of the most passionate in in Germany, which is why they're able to fill the stadiums to an amazing degree. Some of the stadiums in Germany are magnificent. Nothing short of magnificent. This stadium in Hamburg is one of my all-time favourites. It doesn't get much better than the Hamburg Stadium. And it always looks brand new, and I remember taking a tour and loving how modern and well-made it is. It's a shame that they haven't achieved the kind of success that they deserve considering the kind of stadium they have and the size and prominence of the city, but that's because of the ugly domination of FC Hollywood aka Bayern Munich in recent years, and I hope that someday somebody does something about that financial/capitalist domination of Fussball in Deutschland, sooner rather than later.

I've been to see St. Pauli many times, and I've been to HSV's stadium to see the UEFA Cup final…read more However, while I love St. Pauli, and the HSV stadium is impressive, it's hard (and sometimes expensive) to get tickets. That, and the discovery that there was a team around the corner from my flat made me inquisitive enough to come along to watch Altona 93 this past weekend. Altona are currently close to the top of a regional league in the 5th tier of German football. Apparently this stadium holds 8,000, but I can't really imagine it! On the day 541 turned up. There were quite a lot of children, and amusingly also quite a lot of dogs on the terraces. A standing ticket is EUR6 and a seat is EUR9. I was quite impressed that they actually have a proper covered stand with seats. There were numerous beer stands around, and a few stands selling bratwurst and fries. In fact, there was a bar in the middle of the main terrace. Even more impressively this bar had leather sofas! Random. Yes, yes, but how was the football? Well, not that great, but we saw two good goals. Altona tried to play good football rather than physical football and at the end of the second half there was a comedy red-card incident. One of the away team's central defenders made a bad challenge on one of the Altona strikers. It probably would have been a yellow card were it not for the fact that the defender quickly got to his feet and then blasted the ball into the prone striker's face! Much fighting ensued all quite entertaining. The beer and food prices weren't bad either. A pint was EUR2.80 and a big plate of currywurst & fries EUR4. All in all a pretty fun afternoon out. The only reason I took off a star is because they DO NOT SELL REAL BEER. Yes, you heard me, they only sell alcohol free beer!! NEEIIIIIIIINNNNNNN. How can this be possible in Germany??? Also, the pretzels would be a lot nicer if they were warmed up and came with a cheese dip. Another note to foreigners, do not leave the stadium after you enter as you cannot get back in.

"We love you San Pauli, we do!"…read more I've been to quite a few St. Pauli games. The atmosphere they get down at the Millerntor is amazing. The football can be quite entertaining, but it isn't of the highest quality. One thing I can say is that you'll almost certainly see some goals. I've watched games from all over the stadium now, standing, seating, VIP seating. I think overall I prefer to stand, you get the best atmosphere that way - however if you do get standing tickets, be sure to get there in plenty of time to grab a good spot. The one time I arrived as the game was starting, I ended up having to stand right at the front, which means behind the fence, which blocks quite a lot of your view. Recently I got to experience the opposite way of watching a game from the VIP area in the new stand. I've got to say that the hospitality is pretty nice. Free beer served by (mostly) attractive young ladies, who deliver beer to your seats throughout the game. There is also an all-you-can-eat buffet and needless to say you get a great view. The atmosphere is a bit stale though. I got the feeling that me and my friends were the only ones singing... After each goal the stadium bounces to Blur's Song 2 (Woo! It's located in the middle of nowhere and we found if hard to get to. It's a large indoor arena…read morethat hosts sports and entertainment events. Acoustics here were not great when we went to see Hugh Jackman perform on stage. Seating setup was quite ok and there was a lot of staff on hand to help guide you if needed. Plenty of food and drink outlets on site and it was easy to get in and out of the arena. The most frustrating thing about this place was, getting there and back. Huge queues of people waiting on taxis after the concert with absolutely no taxis around for ages, bus line up huge and, there was not enough buses to take you to the train station. The station was also a good walk away in the dark. A taxi driver told us it's a nightmare when there is football game nearby and a concert on at the arena.

Amazingly, at O2 world you get strong O2 reception that actually works! (that's a rarity in…read moreHamburg). I'm still unsure as to what benefit you get for walking through the special O2 entrance, but I guess there must be one. Maybe I'll try it next time Anyway, back to the details of the place. It's actually quite a nice arena. It's very much in the middle of nowhere, but the train + shuttle bus service is pretty great, so it's not much of a problem. Beyond that, it's a decent sized arena, with good viewing from pretty much all seats. The bars and food areas are slightly underwhelming, but it's not a complete rip-off and the service is pretty good. The toilets are also pretty good for such a large arena. All-in-all then it's pretty good, 4/5.
