Before visiting, I called because my grandfather was visiting from Puerto Rico and does not speak English. He asked me to check whether there were any Spanish-speaking employees in the building so he could understand the process and what was being said to him. The woman who answered the phone didn't even let me finish. She rudely cut me off and said, "I understand, but no--only English. This is America." At first, I thought I misheard her, but then I was left speechless realizing she actually said that. How rude and completely unnecessary. Since I couldn't be present, I asked if there was another way we could appraise his coins. Once again, she cut me off and repeated an email address in an extremely arrogant tone, as if I were absolutely wasting her time. I won't continue detailing the experience because it only gets worse, and this is energy I'd rather put into something that actually matters. To wrap up this review, I ended up taking my grandfather to a competitor. They were more than happy to provide a Spanish-speaking employee, who patiently guided him and explained the value of each coin. My grandfather was very happy with their service and knowledge and ended up selling his entire collection for a pretty good penny. I don't know about you, but that sounds like your loss to me. I will never recommend or visit this place again. My rating would be -5 stars if that were possible. read more

Reading some of the comments is like reading "The Tale of Two Businesses". I do have more than fleeting knowledge of how such businesses operate: If you have "50 lbs" of coins, call ahead and make an appointment (underline that)! That is a no-brainer; it could have thrown the 'fbusiness flow' out-the-window. It's an unfair assumption that a business would stop whatever it was doing to fully examine such an accumulation, which the seller expects would take an hour or two. If bilingual support is needed, I would think that the seller would have this 'settled' by having someone along for that type of support. It's sad to say, but many people have paper bags stuffed with base-metal Foreign coins (bright and shiny) which are fun, but are basically worthless. Someone mentioned a 1923-D$20 StG; a study of appropriate Auction Prices Realized have an MS65 selling for 3840., or just above its intrinsic value at the time. Mr. B's offer was admirable imho. The mintage may seem low, but there were literally tons of bags saved from circulation. Please disassociate what values you see in some guides from Reality (or, "what it's worth right now"). I just finished my second successful consignment of send-for-certification/auctioned coins, and again I am quite pleased with the results. Trust the Process. One other thing that galls me: Everyone I have ever spoken with (NY, CA offices and I know the gentleman managing the Boston office), at any time over the past 40 years, practice the highest caliber of Politeness. I don't believe a word of any Mistreatment-by-Phone: it does not happen. In person? It's very highly unlikely that anyone would treat a potential customer with anything less than honor. Ignore the bad reviews from jealous competitors and uninformed consumers. Stack's Bowers is a highly reputable, efficiently run, trustworthy company, both their retail operations and auction house. I invariably enjoy buying from their exciting, entertaining auctions, which are 100% free of the usual hidden reserve bids, shill bidding, puffing, an other deceptions encountered at many if not most other auctioneers. I have spent staggering sums with them over the years and always received my money's worth and then some. They are the only major auction house that accommodates my special requests. When I arrived, the office was clearly open, but the employees wandered about and would not let me enter, leaving a lone woman on their doorstep lugging 50 pounds of rare coins. This is profoundly rude. The office looks like a European bank/gallery; pretention is maximalized. Ask yourself: do you really need to contribute to this business' exorbitant rent? These people are rude and should only deal with people with nothing to do but loll about and posing. This is New York City. I thought I would try to find a reputable dealer to possibly sell a bunch of pre-33 coins. I brought in my 1923-D $20 Saint Gaudens MS-66, which PCGS values at $6,500. Andrew Bowers, who clearly knows better, priced it as a "common dated" coin and offered 3,700. Don't fall for the nice store front. They are just as bad as a pawn shop. In fact on 47th, one shop showed me the true value, and allowed me to make a fully informed decision, as well as offering me a higher price. I was frankly surprised by this, I thought that stacks bowers would have been better for such a high quality coin I was wrong. I went into the store with a bunch of old bills and they seemed unprofessional about it since I don't know much about bills almost seemed like they said fuck it and just tried buying them without even looking. They didn't check each and every bill to really see what was what so I took my bills and left. Showed up during business hours last Friday at NYC location to discuss selling investment grade 2 pound British Sterling coins. This is a horrible cruel company. After getting my internet connected after hurricane Ian and going through thousands of emails, I find a number of nasty grams from Kerri Drake saying my order and membership will be cancelled if I didn't respond by COB that day which was long past. While EVERY company in the world tried to help and make provisions for people recovering from Ian, STACKS BOWERS did the opposite. They just want to add more stress. I had the daunting task of liquidating a large coin collection while knowing nothing about coins I was advised on a coin collector's listserve to work with one of the large reputable coin auction houses. I started my inquiry with Heritage Auctions and spent weeks emailing back and forth and phone calls trying to get my questions answered, including best approach for selling the coins given the nature of the collection, their fees and valuation process, trying to figure out if and how they could work with me to meet the different interests of my siblings in wanting coins and cash value, and the process to get the coins to them and related requirements. It was aggravating to say the least and I got burned out. When I picked up the task again months later--after metal prices declined, by the way--I called Stack's Bowers Gallery and spoke with James. Within literally a few minutes, all my questions were answered to my satisfaction and I had a clear path forward. Throughout the process, James was knowledgable, transparent, helpful and responsive. Although mailing the coins across the country was anxiety-provoking, my anxiety was mitigated by their efficient controlled mailing process. A purchase offer was made within a week after the coins arrived and the money wired immediately after that. Importantly, their fees were reasonable and purchase offer was fair. From beginning to end, the transaction was completely hassle-free, professional and actually exciting. My only regret is that I didn't start with Stack's. I highly recommend them. read more

We brought into the gallery some coins and old paper bills. We don't know a thing about coin values and were pleasantly surprised with Andrew's assessment and immediate payment for the lot. I am a coin collector and have been for decades, I trusted in Stack's as they were the most well known "reputable" coin store around. I bought a raw Choice BU flying eagle cent. Years later I sent the coin into PCGS to get slabbed and they sent it back saying it was "whizzed". I went back to Stack's , however, years later and showed them the coin, Not only didn't they return my money ( which I didn't expect as it had been some time) , not even an apology. It was very unprofessional of them to sell me a whizzed coin. I was too trusting and should have examined the coin closely before buying,. It's not a huge deal, ultimately unloading the coins is what I wanted and what I'll be getting is better than nothing, but I still think they really need to improve their communication so that expectations are better set. I'm sure there are a handful of businesses that try to manipulate Yelp as Scott A. tried to above, but I'm about to put the kabosh on that nonsense. Yelp is a forum that must remain an honest, customer-only means of evaluating businesses. I brought a family heirloom coin to Stacks with the idea that i'd offer it for sale to them if they offered me a desirable price. The man took my coin to a back room, confirmed that it's pure gold, and offered me the gold-value price only. No further discussion or bargaining. While I realize that business is business and Stack's is there to make a profit, this was a sleazy offer. was my coin super-rare or uncirculated? No it was not. Did it have value exceeding the gold-only value? Most certainly. I did not expect to walk out with "stacks" of cash. But I did expect them to live up to their well-established longevity and status.
