Note: this review and rating is from a volunteer's perspective from fall 2010…read more I volunteered at this food bank for several weeks. It takes a few tries before really learning the ropes of this place, because the system is so disorganized. There are particular stations (ex. drinks, desserts, poultry, grains, canned goods, etc) that majority of the volunteers covered, and basically clients got in a line and circled around the facility, grabbing an item from each station. Volunteers only assisted people when clients couldn't reach at item. Other volunteers were the receptionist, who checked every client in, people who restocked the inventory or ran food drives in front of grocery stores. Cons: -the place is VERY small and with so many clients piling in, it gets cramped very quickly -as a volunteer, I feel like I'm not contributing anything at all; yes, some clients were grateful I was there, but I myself felt to gratitude -the permanent volunteers are very rude, bossy, and kind of like bullies (some of these volunteers claimed certain stations, not giving others a chance to be there) -the system is very disorganized. I had to figure out what I was supposed to do for myself. Here's a bit of how the system works: 1. The receptionist checks clients in 2. Clients go around to each station, grabbing 1-3 items, depending on the number in their household

Great volunteer opportunity for people of all ages…read more This warehouse is a food distribution center that is used to sort bulk food into family-sized portions. There are two large rooms where the work takes place and each can hold up to 60 volunteers (120 people total). The shifts are all 2 hours long with the first 30 minutes allowed for preparation activities like putting on hairnets and getting an introduction to the facility and the work. At that point, depending on whether the shift is full, you separate into two teams. On my most recent volunteer shift our group was working with oats. Once we were in the work room, each person chose a job. Some scooped oats into bags, others secured the bags closed with tape and put them in boxes, a few replenished oats for the teams, and a small set moved the bags of oats between the scooping table and the boxers. The 90 minutes of actual work time flew by very quickly as people got to know each other and got into a work rhythm. Upon completion of the work, we spent time cleaning the floors and tables and then took a group photo with a sign revealing how many meals we bagged. NW Harvest provides an organized, quick, and inspiring experience for volunteers and I highly recommend a visit.

Off to the left is a kids area where they have Tot Time and story time for kids (there is a small charge to attend). Off to the right is a desk with a receptionist. The dance class is in a large room with mirrors on one of the walls. Our instructor is a local gentleman in his 50's. Such a wonderful teacher. Only 4 couples signed up for the class, but we have a lot of fun despite small numbers. I am anxious to take more classes at the B.C.C.!

I want there to be a place for women to feel safe & supported. In recent years, i've had people I know come through JWC needing refuge from some really tough situations. With the diversity in this city I was certain the JWC is providing as they describe a 12 key holistic program to help them overcome what they've been through. JWC has no services for these women! None, there's no support groups, no resume or job help, no education for dealing with their pasts/trauma's, NOTHING & to add to it there is no staff of color and over half their residents are of color. This is absolutely not a way to have a program and services (which there's none) and not have people there that look like them. There needs to be real services offered, trauma informed staff, court system navigation and specific support programs for victims of DV. Their website has nothing that they say their offering!
