It took the artist over 5 months and over 1000 hours to create from thousands of components. Built by hand, it was installed with the help of a crane. Built from weathering steel, the rust is a design feature and adds to how absolutely awesome it looks. He was tragically killed in Saint Thomas on September 15, 1885 when he was stuck by a locomotive. A terrible accident and on the 100th anniversary, the city dedicated this 38 ton statue as a tribute. There is parking nearby and you can get a great picture with "The King of Elephants" here. From the Atlas Obscura article, "It would be easy to assume that Jumbo was named 'Jumbo' because he was so large. At over 13 feet he was definitely tall for an African elephant, but it was the other way around. His name--thought to derive from the Swahili word 'jambo' for 'hello', or 'jumbe' for 'chief' or 'boss'--came before 'jumbo' was slang word for huge. The word that today is used to describe everything from giant shrimp to oversized paper towel rolls comes from the boss elephant himself." And that's pretty awesome. One of the first courthouses built in Ontario, the facility was recently remodeled and expanded to…read moreconsolidate the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice into one modern facility. Topped with a beautiful dome, the structure is in the Palladian-style and was originally designed by architect John Turner and built in 1854 from stone and yellow brick. It was heavily damaged by a fire in 1898 and repaired/expanded. A newer update was completed in 2014. One of the first of its kind, the courthouse is a prominent example of the combined courthouse, jail and county buildings erected by counties in many parts of Canada between 1849 and 1867 when such facilities were a requirement to achieve full county status. Very little street parking nearby, which is odd. I found a "15 minutes only" spot in front and was able to walk some of the grounds. A security guard said that there are lots a couple of blocks away.
