Southern High School

Southern High School

Southern high school is a magnet career high school in the Jefferson county public schools system…read morelocated off Preston Highway in the Okolona area of Louisville Kentucky. This purple and white wearing institution has a mascot of "Trojans" and was built in 1951. At one point southern was considered to have one of the top machine tool and die programs in the whole area. Being an alumni of southern graduating in the class of 2002 I can say that in my 4 years there I produced some great memories, met some life long friends (including my current wife) and had a really good time. I was pretty active in my time at a southern as I played 3 sports (football, wrestling, and track) and was involved in a various of clubs such as beta club and national honors society. During my time frame at the school the graduating classes were in the several hundreds. So in my 4 years being involved in all those activities with essentially 7 different graduating classes I probably interacted with close to a thousand different people. Like any school Southern is a place that you will get what you put into it. It's not considered a school for high academic excellence. But it is achievable. I feel like I made the most out of my time at the school and because of that I have long lasting memories and a better overall reaction to my time at the school. The school itself is quite large. Has two gymnasiums attached to the school, a large newly (built in the 90s I believe) renovated automotive department and 3 stories/floors full of classrooms. Well 4 floors if you count that historic and borderline mythical 4th floor that is gated off. I'm not sure about today's students but back in my day for several years there was all kinds of crazy rumors of what was up there. From a swimming pool, to a teachers smoking lounge there was all kinds of crazy and wild rumors. I've actually been up there. It's literally maybe 1-2 classrooms (it's been 20 years so some details escape me) full of old school supplies and a ladder that pops you up to the flat rooftop. And No! There isn't a pool up there. As stated already I enjoyed my time at the school. I'm not sure southern will ever be noted for a long list of famous alumni (super bowl mvp Phil Simms) and will never be a place you send a kid strictly to achieve a higher education. But the opportunity can be created. I'm personally fortunate enough to send my kids to private schools to try and set them up for higher education with better resources. However as stated, there are kids who don't take advantage of those programs. So it really does depend on the individual to make the most of there academic situation. I'll end this review the same way the former long time principal and principal during my time Jerry Keepers use to end his morning announcements. "Have a great Southern Day".

I graduated from Mercy Academy. It actually wasn't my first choice of high school (long story--I…read moreonly attended Mercy for my junior and senior years.), but I am happy it ended up being my last. Mercy has continued to grow and change for the positive since I graduated. Opened by the Sisters of Mercy, they have a rich, faith-based tradition of education young women. (It's a all girls Catholic school.) The faculty is very devoted. The school moved to it's current location in 2007, and it is truly state of the art. That kind of tradition mixed with amazing facilities, plus fantastic people (faculty, staff, students, alumnae), really make Mercy the very special place it is. As an alumna now, I am so proud of my alma mater and am happy to continue to support it. Mercy Academy even was just recently nationally certified as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) school--the first in Kentucky and the first all-girl school in the nation!! In my previous job, I had the opportunity to regularly work with Mercy girls and staff, and I was constantly impressed. If you're researching high schools in Louisville, I can't say enough great things about Mercy! Go Jags!

Overall a good experience! I attended Mercy my junior and senior years of high school. My time…read morethere is largely filled with good memories, and I'm still friends with several of my fellow Mercy girls 8 years later. My only note is, my good friend and I both have varying levels of learning disabilities, and we both had bad experiences with some staff as a result. Certain teachers did not treat us with much kindness or patience. Granted, this was years ago, and the main teacher we had problems with doesn't appear to be employed by Mercy anymore, so it may no longer be the case. If your child has a learning deficiency, please be sure she is treated with respect by her teachers! Edit: I talked to another friend of mine who went to Mercy (a couple years behind me), and she echoed our feelings of bad experiences due to special circumstances. She doesn't have a learning disability, but she struggled with serious health problems her entire senior year. She missed a lot of school due to being in the hospital and said the assistant principal treated her unfairly, as if she was making up her health issues, and almost didn't allow her to make up the work she missed. It was terribly stressful for her. So, again, just make sure if your daughter needs extra accommodations, that she is treated fairly and compassionately.
