My first visit to St Elizabeth Church was to attend a family baptismal. The church is on a popular…read moreroad in a beautiful neighborhood of the Town of Huntington. The Cathedral is fairly large with plenty of seating for any given service or religious affairs. The church was performing three baptismal at the same time, but given the status of the current pandemic, they did an outstanding job to mitigate exposure to the virus inside the church. The father was wearing a mask while performing the service, which made it difficult to hear him. However, the service was wonderfully translated and surprisingly the young baptismal children did not even cry during the service. I have visited many beautifully architecturally designed churches in the United States and as well as Europe. By common nature, the church is meant to encourage and deliver its patrons hope in something greater than themselves. I often notice that its intonation are interpreted in the design of the altar and the ceilings of a given cathedral. St Elizabeth has demonstrated that impression by their beautifully architecturally designed altar and overall interior design.

It's sort of like the David vs. Goliath of faiths (see what I did there with the Biblical reference?) So either way, I'm Lutheran Protestant - now that that's out of the way... Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church is a cozy Church/Chapel/Sunday School located on the East side of Jackson Avenue about a half mile north of Jericho Tpke. While they've been through a few different Pastors since I've been attending, the congregation remains loyal. From when I was five years old, through Communion and Confirmation, to when I was ushering, I consistently run into the same smiling faces every time I go. There's a feeling of family and fellowship here - clearly the reason people keep coming back. Our newest Pastor, Marc Herbst, is forward-thinking and savvy of current news and pop culture. His sermons, perhaps starting off with a recollection of the season finale of the Sopranos or Charlie Brown, leave us wondering where he's going to go next. He effortlessly draws analogies between events we're all well aware of, with calendar-specific religious parallels that some of us may not have fully understood prior. Regardless of how "dedicated" of a Christian you are, there's sort of a universal "AHA" feeling and even a few quiet chuckles amongst the congregation. There's also a visible energy felt throughout services, especially during the more joyous times on the Christian calendar. Song selections are more upbeat, brass and woodwinds accompany the organist during songs, and the congregation is asked to participate and respond both formally and informally throughout services. Faith's web site has also been updated, with weekly podcasts replacing the audio cassette tapes once sent to members who couldn't make it to Church. The Pastor also runs an email listserv, blasting out important announcements and information to congregants on an opt-in basis. Although I'm living in the city now and not there nearly as frequently as I once was, I always look forward to returning, mingling with the other members, and of course, hearing where the Pastor is going to go next!
