This isn't a review of the high school itself - if you're basing where to send your kid to school,…read moreyou're gonna have to look deeper than yelp - but is just about the physical school itself. It's gargantuan! My kids had a dance competition this weekend at this high school. We were driving south on I-75 and as we were approaching the exit I could see a big corporate building and thought the school had to be close by it - I had no idea that IS the school! Apparently the building used to be an IBM complex and judging from the Brutalist design was 1960s or 1970s (ah, eventual googling says 1977). Just a massive pouring of concrete - you'd think the earth will eventually give way and this thing will collapse right into the molten core of the globe. And I doubt it'd stop there. So the building is grand and imposing from the outside, and the car drop-off area into the "lobby" is magnificent with its tiles and stairs [note: I'm not an architect, just a guy who thinks this stuff is cool, so forgive me if I speak in incorrect terminology]. If you're familiar with Marcel Breuer's Atlanta public library, you'll be reminded of it here. To go to my event, I wandered down the main hall, which is nonstop glass windows to my right giving me a look of nearby woods and a pond that the building is built atop of. Gazing into the waters in the afternoon provided a mirror image of the building, and the symmetry of it made it look like the building descended deep into the earth in repetitive iterations. In summary, this is just another one of those great hidden discoveries. Short of some press a few years ago when this building was converted into the school (at no small price, natch) you don't really find much info on the utter greatness of this campus. So now you know. You don't even have to go inside to appreciate it, though it's nice if you can. I don't wish to relive my high school years, but i imagine if I went here I'd at least have one positive memory to reflect on.

Her local high school wasn't able to keep her safe, or provide the challenge she enjoys. HSL Academy is a private, rigorous college preparatory high school. Our daughter is taking AP English Literature this coming semester. She is graduating this May. She is applying to colleges such as Agnes Scott, Smith, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, Amherst, Connecticut College, Ursinius, Wheaton, Clark, Bennington, Bard, Dickinson, Muhlenberg, and Juniata for example. The dean of the high school is very supportive, and has shared with us she feels our daughter is well prepared for college. We trust the dean's assessment and are forever grateful For the exceptional education our daughter has received over the last two years.

I don't know what their enrollment experience was like, but mine was SUB PAR at best! I called twice before visiting to see if I need to schedule an appointment and was promised a call back. That call never came. I then stopped by to visit and inquire about the program, curriculum, enrollment etc. The lady at the desk pulled out a packet, laid it on the counter and stated that I needed to bring proof of residency, child's birth certificate etc. I stood there blinking for what seemed like minutes and she finally stated "Oh, it's GA Pre-K so it's free and breakfast and lunch are provided". I was completely shocked at the poor level of service and minimal information provided. Maybe that's been her experience with the demographics of their center and maybe they only care about "free" and "food provided" (which I seriously doubt). If you are going to be teaching young children, you should at least ATTEMPT to advise the prospective parents of the educational value and environment etc. before shoving forms at them and reiterating that it's FREE. As the saying goes....you get what you pay for. Needless to say, my daughter is now enrolled in a PAID school.

They told us they were preparing us for the adult world, but the workload and difficulty at cottage going into a real college was like doing the tutorial for a children's educational game (not unlike those you played on the fisher price tablets in the 2000s) then being thrown into an end game dark souls boss fight. They don't teach you to handle your executive dysfunction or ADHD, they see someone excel academically and assume they don't need help. They didn't prepare me for the adult world, I survived through sheer luck and clawing my way back up to stable ground. That said, while the school itself failed me, there were many teachers who made the hell of my teenage years bearable.

I struggled…read moreprimarily with mental health, not cognitive disabilities which made me much more aware of the injustices that the kids suffer at the hands of SOME of the staff. Three examples: As a minor, at 17 years old, I was locked in a room with the two female counselors (with no adult representing me or any parent present for such a conversation) while the counselors (Tanya & Margaret) randomly started to tell me I should not be having *** at my age or with the boy I had a crush on at the time. I was confused because I had not been active and I was a young girl. When I said that I was not active, they rolled their eyes and said "stop lying, you are the kind of girl. we see this all the time." Absolutely disgusting and inappropriate conversation to have with a minor. My parents were furious. The second example is: I excitedly told my teacher (Wilfred) that I had been accepted to the University of Alabama my senior year! Only for him to turn to me in front of all my classmates and say "You will flunk out anyway" and turned back to his computer. I was laughed at by all of my classmates and my only friend in school had to stand up for me to a teacher who should be viewed as a mentor and safe person, but instead was one of my biggest bullies throughout my time at The Cottage School. My third example was: I was living through a very difficult period of time at home and in my own mind. This put a big strain on my sleeping, and I was not getting proper sleep at all. In the mornings, I was involuntarily falling asleep in my classes and would consistently be punished for it instead of anyone checking on my well being. Especially at a school that is supposed to have been specialized towards children with special circumstances. There were a thousand other instances that led to me deeming my time at The Cottage School to be mildly scarring for me as a young woman. However, I will say that Siree, Roshonda, Ryan and his wife Lydia, Katya, Lynn and Hector were the absolute highlights of that place, and should absolutely be recognized for the amazing and lasting impressions they leave on their students. True empathetic and patient angels, every one of them. With that said, I hope that The Cottage School can learn from what I've shared of my experience.

All three still mention Cambridge and we visit from time to time (they would go every single week if we let them). We came from a different daycare that my 3 year old was REALLY struggling at. She never came home with a good report. We decided to move her and our 18 month old to a different daycare, and I took a lot of time to find a daycare that felt ready to take on the unique challenges that my kids had. My kids have flourished. Every morning, the 3 year old is excited to go to school. They are always having a good time when I arrive. They are loved, well cared for, and have made amazing strides academically in the short time they have been there (a little over a month). I don't think we could have found a better daycare for them. I would highly recommend this daycare to anyone.
