I enjoyed Old Scona's academic focus and the knowledge and the support of the wonderful staff. They have been working on renovations and the general appearance of the school has greatly improved in recent years. The number of students at Old Scona means that you know everyone's name, and it also increases the number of opportunities available per student. Come to Old Scona if you want a challenge and you are willing to push yourself academically. You'll meet people who have diverse foci but are united by the desire to achieve. There is no official or unofficial dress code, since it is mostly unnecessary. It's a very safe school: there is no safety patrol. The students trusted each other enough that they leave lockers unlocked. The running joke was that you could leave your laptop, phone, and wallet out, but only your graphing calculator would be 'borrowed'. I really enjoyed my years at Old Scona. It's a wonderful place!

I think it really depends on the teacher on whether you get a good education and learning experience in that class. I have a social teacher this year who is amazing and goes super in depth in topics, it has made me appreciate social studies so much. But my other teachers have been hit or miss. One teacher was extremely ego centered and I don't think we could go five minutes without them bragging about how good they were in that subject. It made it extremely difficult to learn and want to learn that subject. One thing I really appreciate about MAC is the passion teachers have. I used to go to St. Mark Junior High and it was the most awful experience, so going here made everything feel so much better and I felt like I belonged with my peers and teachers being more passionate about school. I do have some concerns about the English department, but I don't think it's affected me as much as my peers since I've always been stronger in English. I would also say that MAC is not nearly as hard as they say it is. I know there is a huge pressure coming to this school and you have to apply, but a lot of kids aren't getting 90s all the time. Half the time most people aren't even fully getting 80s. So don't feel too much pressure. Overall I would recommend this school! Some of the teachers aren't as nice, and if you are coming by yourself it can be challenging to make friends. But if you are open to putting yourself out there and not being solely focused on academics then I think you'll do good at MAC. One thing you need to know: there will be so much unnecessary pressure from your peers. Just focus on yourself and achieve to the best of your abilities! Don't try and work yourself to the bone. 9/10 that only makes the stress, no sleep, and anxiety about tests and schoolwork worse. Most importantly: just because your at MAC doesn't mean you need top marks! Just try your best! ONE THING I WOULD CHANGE PLEASE: As someone who is Scottish, I find it extremely offensive to have a PERSON as a mascot. Why not an animal like normal schools? This just seems off and everyone I know at the school has said something about how creepy and offensive it is.

The best part about this school is the students. Everyone knows everyone and everyone pretty much gets a long. That's how I remember it anyways. The inside is a square shape so it is pretty easy to find your way around. They also had a snack shack which had some great snacks at lunch. These were the good old days when no one had a care in the world.

The teachers here were really good, and I know there are still many of the same teachers now. When choosing a junior high, parents and children should discuss what their focus is and find a school that will fit their needs best.

The best part was the playgrounds. They were massive. One big park and one smaller one for the younger kids. They have tons of soccer fields and couple of baseball diamonds and a skating rink which is fairly new and probably among the better ones in the city. It comes equipped with benches and all. OH and a big hill for winter if you want to go sledding during recess. They also had a huge empty field but now condo's have gone up in that field but there is still more than enough empty land to play on. This high school focuses on technology and sciences, but there is no need to be a techy or a scientist to go here. I certainly was not. There are some really cool courses offered here that I don't think all high schools would offer. Some of the optional classes included: pottery class, horticulture class, shop class, cosmetology, psychology etc. This school has its own greenhouse (which I now wish I spent more time in), many science classrooms, many computer labs, a good size library, gym and skateboard park. This is a great high school no matter what your focus is.
