As it turns…read moreout, this particular church (like many others in the city) makes for a decent sized event space. I was here on Friday night for a few lessons in merengue and salsa. The event space is quite spacious, there were a few tables and chairs along the front windows set up, and the rest of the room got to be a dance floor. There's also a stage at the front of the room. And acoustics? Loud, but decent. The room was dark, so hard to say exactly what colour the walls were, I'd go with white. It'd be easy enough to turn decorate the space for whatever occasion you're using it for without having to deal with ugly coloured carpets or weird drape shades. I couldn't tell you much about the kitchen space, but it looked like there was one. Parking could potentially be an issue. With a full house, street parking is incredibly limited!

St. Elizabeth is the Catholic Hungarian church in downtown Calgary, a small and humble, but tightly knit community that took in a family of five back in 1992 and allowed them to make the first in-roads into Canada. As I suspect is the case in recent years, that family stuck around for a few years and eventually naturalized into Canada, finding their own parish closer to home. St. Elizabeth's organizations often host dinners after mass, and every fall make tons of Hungarian and blood sausage, and sell them for charity.

This group of committed Christians faces extreme temperatures below 40 degrees in the winter and above 30 degrees in the summer, yet despite the extreme temperatures and being harassed by Calgary bylaw officers and police officers, they steadfastly serve the homeless four days a week with food, clothing and a Christian message of hope. They have successfully gotten hundreds off of the streets and these individuals are now contributing citizens in our society. They also serve the thousands of working poor that grace our streets. Some of the people they serve are banned for life from entering homeless shelters, so without the help of the Street Church, they would literally starve. I have looked at their organization in an in depth fashion and am convinced that they are all that stands between life and death for some of Calgary's homeless population. Way to go Street Church! And guess what? It was cheaper too. We didn't decorate the church in any way. Nothing. It was beautiful and simple and exactly us. The church admin and pastors were great. They let us bring in our own pastor and they provided someone who ran the sound perfectly. A great experience.

Five stars for a church? Oh yes. Make no mistake, this review is not of any particular activities…read morethat happen within the walls of this community church, but of the space itself. It's fabulous! I attended Pecha Kucha Night #7: Love with a great many other Calgarians. The building has a wonderful setup. The basement comes with a full kitchen (and can masquerade as the bar), a small stage, and a good-sized main room with smaller rooms sectioned off along one wall. I fell in love with the checker-board tiling on the floor. It was fun exploring all the different stairwells that connected the basement to the first floor. The main hall is setup with a stage at the front and three columns of pews, one in the centre, and two at an angle on the sides. The best seats are by far in the middle. You may find a pillar or two obstructing your view from the sides. It looked like a pipe organ was installed at the very front of the room, although I'm not sure if it works or not. If you look up, you'll notice a second balcony that wraps around 3 sides of the room. I couldn't help but admire the intricate pattern on the railing. I hopped upstairs to check out the view from above during the intermission, I think I would've preferred the seats up there to those in the wings on the main floor. Although there was a good sound system in place for the evening, at one point the emcee stepped in front of the mic to demonstrate the room acoustics. I could hear him without any trouble at the back of the room. The only downfall is in the quantity of available washrooms. There aren't many. I counted two-that's not to say there isn't at least one more in the building somewhere. However, it's not exactly something an old-school church can do anything about, so no stars lost there.
