Quite a unique history and a church stood through times. I'm amazed with it even I'm not a church goer, it's not big compared to others but quite big and impressive with the inside structure and decor. They do have a maze underneath where thy buried important people there. The top is quite breadth taking of 360 view of the city. You can just spend hrs to enjoys and take in the views. What an incredible place. It absolutely gave me chills sitting in the the sanctuary. I'm pretty sure I just stood there in awe for quite some time. The view from the top was completely and totally worth it as well! Don't forget about the Crypt when you visit either! Yes, I'm reviewing a church. But strictly as a tourist destination in the city which it really is. You are able to purchase tickets to the bell tower and also to the crypt. IWas told to come here by a local here in Hamburg. I was planning on going to visit some of the other churches but I'm so glad I came to this one. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL. And now I hear its the most beautiful church in northern Germany. There are about 500 stairs on your way up to the bell tower. Doesn't sound like a lot but.... wow. It's a long way up. You can also take an elevator if you're unable to do the stairs. It is a great view from the bell tower over the entire city of Hamburg. From the top of the tower to underground in the crypt... most notably is that CPE Bach is burried here. As a musician, and even moreso, a flute player, this was pretty remarkable to me especially since I had played a CPE Bach piece for a jury in undergrad. Quite possibly one of the best things I've seen in the city. Inside the church itself is gorgeous. It is a saintly white with gold embellishments all over. A giant organ is located in the back with two smaller ones on each side where the musicians sit. This church is a must see just for its historical importance and beautiful views read more

"Stair Master Exercises" The church itself and the view at the top are stunning, but take the elevator! I would have loved nothing more, but our fearless leader proclaimed that, "To take the stairs is the German way, and so, we take the stairs!" I saw many huffing people on the way up--their pained and sweaty faces said they'd rather be giving birth (women and men) than continue the climb. If you absolutely feel the need to climb to the top of a church, tackle the mere 302 steps of Peterskirche in Munich instead. read more

The St. Michaelis Church is one of Hamburg's famous churches, located sort of in between the Speicherstadt and the city center. The inside is very pretty and special, with many curved lines, pastel colors and the prettiest church organ. But the most spectecular part must be the view from the tower. It costs € 5 to get up there, but although I'm not the biggest view-fan, I'd say it's worth it. You can choose between stairs and an elevator to get up (and down) and the panoramic view shows you the mix of Hamburg being a cute cobblestone city, a modern city and a harbor city at the same time. From here you have a beautiful all-round view over Hamburg. For a small workout you can use the stairs. ;) But St. Michaelis Turm also have an elevator, so you can drive up and walk down by stairs. There you can see and sometimes hear - the bells of St. Michaelis Turm. read more

Beautiful church from the outside to the inside. To go up to the tower or into the crypt it costs money to do so. Unfortunately I did not do this as I did not know what to expect but after writing this review and seeing the photos that have been posted by others I wish I knew as otherwise I would of paid. I highly recommend to anyone. I lit a candle whilst there for my nan and grandad who are in heaven. I love the candles with a drawing of their church on it. read more

Must be part of every visit in Hamburg. The baroque intereur ist great. closed to catholic style, but more understatement. Even the concerts are a very special tipp. The Cathedral St. Nichael has a great and famous acoustic. read more

As a tourist, I found this church to be of fair interest. Being a church that has been reconstructed (although to seemingly mimic the original design), there was the luxury of a lift to reach the top rather than the usual flight of narrow and steep stairs - that was quite a relief as I only arrived in Hamburg late in the day! From what I recall, it was a couple of Euros to go to the top, and it was well worth it, the 360 degree view of the city was fairly impressive. The mechanics of the clock (on the way down via the stairs) was fairly special too, did not anticipate to see this so it was quite a surprise. Well worth a short stop by. read more

just amazing to view hamburg from this place. the setting of the buildings, the parks, the alster lake and the harbor all makes the viewing nice. this is the place to really take a good glimpse of the entire hamburg. climbing the stairs also bring the memories of the place. a nice place for visitors in hamburg to spend time. read more

As I live practically in the shadow of this church, I thought it worthwhile to review it as well. It's a beautiful attraction in Hamburg to visit and it practically has been a dominant figure in my stays in Hamburg. An ex-girlfriend of mine lived right across the street from the entrance so I was used to seeing all the tourist crowds out front and walked by often. It took a long time before I ever went up to get a view from the tower but it is worth it. You really do see a bunch, especially if the weather is right. Further, I surprise myself how often I look up to check the time on the tower as I can see if from my apartment. Bonus: saved money on a clock for that room. :-) If you have people visiting, it's definately worth a stop in to check it out and do go up to the top as this is the best part. One last point. As my gym is also in the shadow of the tower (Meridian Spa), an off-topic tip: don't look down at all the naked people out on the back terrace cooling themselves off from the sauna.
