On my self guided tour of Hamburg, I stopped along at what appeared to be the tallest steeple in the town. St. Nicholas's church is more of a memorial than an actual building. Again, another great piece of history. It caught fire in 1943 and what you see today are the remains of what was once a place of worship for the people of Hamburg. The remains of the building are still beautiful and you can imagine what it must have looked like. There are pieces of artwork dedicated to the times as well which really spoke to me. It is pretty much the complete opposite of St. Michaels. But definately worth a stop and marvel at what happened there 70 years ago. read more

This is the remains of a church that was built in 1842 and destroyed in 1943 during the war. It's spire is the tallest structure in the city and it was used by the Allies as a visual landmark during bombing flights into Germany. All that remains of the church is the spire and a few ruined walls. You can pay 5 Euros cash and ride the elevator to the top for a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. In the basement is a museum that is well worth visiting. The stub of your 5 Euro ticket gets you into the museum. We thought this was a highlight of our trip to Hamburg. read more

St Nikolai is probably one of Hamburg's most beautiful buildings. And it's sad history adds to its beauty. The original church was severly damaged in the great fire of 1842 and rebuilt under the guidance of a British architect. 101 years later, Operation Gommerah burnt the beautiful church down again. It has been kept as a war memorial and it is one of the 'must see' places in Hamburg. A lift takes visitors up to the top of the tower giving an amazing view over the whole city, while the old crypt has been turned into a small museum. read more

This museum and monument was the one thing recommended by a friend that I managed to get to in the afternoon that I was in Hamburg, and I'm glad that I did. For 5€ you get a lift ticket and entrance to the museum. I don't regret paying for the lift, though with the construction scaffolding and dreary weather we didn't see very much while up in the tower. There are a few plaques and pictures. You can still get an idea of the original construction, with the ornate details and gargoyles. I'd recommend saving for a sunnier, brighter time if you can. The museum is very well done. There is just enough discussion to feel the significance and sadness without being terribly graphic. This was the first WWII museum that I'd been to in Germany, and it was interesting to me to hear that perspective. There was plenty to read and see, but not so much as to be overwhelming. read more

The bombed out remains of this once magnificent Gothic cathedral are a moving memorial to the victims of the Allied bombing of Hamburg and the victims of the Holocaust. You can wander around the open space outdoors for free, but for only 3,70 EUR you can see the exhibit of pictures in the crypt and take the elevator up the tower. The crypt exhibit has pictures of many cities that were destroyed by bombing during WWII including pre-war and contemporary pictures. read more

The St. Nikolai tower is absolute worth visiting if you want to learn more about Hamburgs history and enjoy its beautiful architecture. In front of the St. Nikolai you can find some really interesting art/monuments, relating to the war and its remembrance. For a lousy 3 euros you take the elevator, to the height of 76meters. From here, a fantastic, breathtaking view over Hamburgs harbour and city centre welcomes you. Interesting photos are showed with stories about the war; its bombings and what was left of Hamburg. Sad to see how many buildings had been distroyed..but great to compare these pictures to the view of modern Hamburg. Well, I think they did a great job! read more

Definitely a place to visit while in Hamburg, so sad the devastation WWII had on the city. The ruins stand as a testament to all those that died both in Germany and around the world. Seeing the photographs and reading about the devastation whilst in such a landmark building is quite poignant. Taking up what Sooffietje says it's quite interesting to be able to sit these images alongside such breathtaking views of 'new' Hamburg. read more

Incredible exhibit in the basement for free. And there is an elevator up to the top of the tower which is still standing. Unfortunately, it's under construction so you can't see much up there. But a visit to the exhibit down below is totally worth the trip! read more
