Beauty is in the eye of the beholder…read more St. Demetrios Church is beauty beyond words. Walk into this Church and you feel as if you've died and gone to heaven due to its beauty and grander. OK, maybe I'm a little biased. I did have my wedding here, my siblings and most of my cousins (there are 25 first cousins on my dad's side) had their baptisms or got married here. We love our Church. I've been to many of beautiful churches all over the world since I'm fascinated with the architecture and the art that is adorned within, but St. D's (as welovingly call it ) holds a special place in my heart. I've even have friends who've moved to other states that come back to Chicago to baptise their kids. St. D's welcomes all to visit and take part of the services. Special events include the summer festival which takes place the 3rd or 4th weekend in August each and every year. The other spectacular event happens during holy week during Easter. The Friday night funeral procession through the neighborhood is quite a site to see and the resurrection service on Saturday night usually means standing room only. There are many Greek Orthodox Churches in Chicago, and all are worth a visit but St. D's has something special that I can't explain. Even though many people have moved away from the city, they still come here. It just grows on you and stays with you. It's a must see.

They have a Sunday morning community service, it starts at 10am and literally at 10am they will just start silent meditation, follow by an interval with chanting and prayer, than you are back into meditation for another 25 minutes. After that there is a dharma talk, final announcements, and you are welcome to join the group for tea and sweets in the downstairs hall. I have been going to the Sunday service for a month. It's been a very good experience. They offer an introduction to meditation class, retreats and membership with more hours for week services and yoga. There is also a cute bookstore by the entrance.

Reflecting on this, I realized that there were certain assumptions that the male monk failed to inform me, before I checked in. I don't want to go into exact details of what those issues were because I don't want to ruin people's view of the Temple. But, if you have any plans to stay at the Temple overnight, ask what rules and expectations are for guests, especially when it comes to the access and use of the kitchen...

I very dearly miss the company of the people I practiced with at ADZG and I remember my time with them fondly. I came to ADZG a confused young man and I left a confused older man. If you're looking for a place that will fix you you're looking in the wrong place. Over the course of my attendance the guiding teacher spent countless hours with me answering my questions and at times showed greater concern for my well being than I had shown for myself. He is not perfect, he has things to work on and it's important to note that we all do. I'm not trying to minimize or maximize his benevolence and every person who enters ADZG will have a different experience of him. My ask, if I can make a request, is that you enter this space with your eyes open and your ears ready. This place may not be for you. You may run away after your first visit. But, please do not take any review of this place as the definition. Our age is poisoned by politics and partisanship. I've heard the guiding teacher make political statements during talks and I believe he should stop that immediately. But he's not a bad person and the people who go to ADZG are not in a cult. Zen isn't a leftist movement and if you're a more conservative person this practice is for you too.

This parish has a lot of committees and does outreaches and celebrations throughout the year. We volunteered for the Health Fair and got to meet parishioners. Everyone is really nice and we feel like we belong to this community. They have a great welcoming committee. The choir is great too. I like the sense of community and ownership in this parish. The stain glass windows are also remind me of old time churches. I like the marble pillars. The floors were recently updated as well. Looks great!
