Today we held a funeral mass for my uncle, and unfortunately, the experience was deeply marred by…read morethe conduct of the Father Raciel the presiding priest. From the onset he was curt and impatient. He spent much of the mass glancing at his watch, giving the clear impression that he was in a hurry to be somewhere else. He delivered an unnecessarily long and off-putting diatribe about who is eligible to receive communion. While it's understood that the Catholic Church has guidelines, his tone and delivery were alienating. He also engaged in debates with individuals who approached with their palms out rather than receiving communion on the tongue. (For context, I am Catholic.) When he asked if anyone planned to give a eulogy, I told him I would be speaking. He acknowledged it and simply asked that I keep it brief, which I agreed to. However, he never invited me up to speak, offering no explanation or acknowledgment. Most upsetting was his decision during the final blessing. It had been clearly communicated--and he had agreed--that four family members (the widow, my cousin, my father, and my aunt) would bless the coffin. Yet, without any explanation, he only permitted three of them to participate, leaving one excluded at the last moment. Funerals are never easy. One hopes that our clergy would be kinder and more understanding. Father Raciel was disappointing.

I will get straight to the point and say that Father Munroe left an EXTREMELY bad taste in my mouth…read morebc of the level of rudeness displayed toward me and my family during the memorial service for our beloved grandmother last week. Upon our entry to the Church, my father asked if he was the father presiding over the mass, to which he rudely responded "Yeah, who are you?!" At that point, we could both tell that something was off. My father, feeling uncomfortable, asked if there was any way he could help, and again was met with a rude response directing him to take a table up to the altar of the Church. Another example of his lack of tact and respects includes when I showed him the readings that were going to be read during the service, and he responded by saying "What are you showing me these for?!" More discourse was had during which my dismayed facial expression was clearly visible, and he continued with "you don't need to show me this bc you'll be reading from it, then they will sing or something like that!" After that, I was rudely dismissed. I will not continue with the continued disrespect he exhibited toward my family and I, but will say that I hope he removed from that church and barred from preaching to anyone else. How can you be a preacher of the Word when you lack decorum and respect for God's children?!

The church was moved by oxcart in 1902 to its current location on Olive Ave. In 1913 a larger church building was built and the old one was used a school until the St. Ann School was finished in 1925. When it was built the church was run by Jesuit priests, known for their social reform and intellectual enlightenment. Today the church is operated by the Diocese of Palm Beach. Today St. Ann is the only Catholic Church in downtown West Palm Beach. In addition to offering a daily mass, the church also runs the St. Ann Place, a homeless outreach and the St. Ann school which is a prestigious International Baccalaureate World School. The St. Ann church has a long history of administering to the religious needs of both snow birds and those who live in the Palm Beach community full time. I loved getting to see this historic building that now sits in the midst of modern Palm Beach. A full schedule of services can be found on the website.
