Unfortunately this is a school that is on the slide. Five or six years ago St Margarets was in the Times top 100 list and had high academic standards. Not any more. Entry standards have been steadily falling and this is starting to show in the examination results, particularly at GCSE and AS level. The high achieving students tend to be from overseas; in recent years there has been a significant rise in the proportion of pupils with Special Educational Needs.
The school is on a large site, with a beautiful main building which must, however, be expensive to maintain. The standard of the facilities does not match those to found in other local schools both in terms of the fabric of the buildings and books and, particularly, ICT equipment.
St Margaret's is inaccessible by public transport but there are a number of school run coaches which leave at the end of the day. The extra-curricular programme suffers as a result, and this is another area where the school cannot compete with local rivals. Outside the classroom it seems there is plenty of sport, individual music and drama lessons(which are extras) and little else. The lunchhour is very short, so there seems to be no opportunities for pupils to pursue other interests.
There is a general perception among pupils and parents that the present management is weak and has low expectations, and that as a result standards of behaviour have deteriorated.
In summary I'd say that I can't recommend St Margaret's any more, which is a shame. read more
