I was a 3rd generation student here, excited to attend as it seemed all 31 of my SLU alum family had the experience of their lives here.
If you suffer from seasonal depression, I strongly suggest NOT going here, or anywhere north of the Adirondacks, for that matter.
This school is the epitome of the stereotyped WASP pre-alcoholic, date-rape environment. You will be isolated with mostly white rage-drinkers who occasionally enjoy skiing. You will be in debt for an education standard on par with a state school (I later transferred to a state school, and I can tell you I received equal or better education from state).
If you are like me when I was deciding where to go to school, you are slightly lost as to which school will fit you best and probably leaning toward whatever will please your parents more. DO NOT DECIDE BASED ON THIS. It seems obvious, but when you're in the college decision process, it seems like the most logical and rewarding choice. On the flip side, do not go here because you disapprove of your parents political choices. This liberal arts school is dichotic to say the least. It is full of rich white, close-minded conservatives, or rich(ish) severe leftists. Neither are educated on their standpoints, and students quickly pick sides and don't leave them. No further discussion is had.
On that note, it is a small school and pretty similar to high school, except more spread out. If you enjoyed high school, and want to continue that experience, a place like St. Lawrence may be for you. If you did not enjoy high school, I can't imagine why you'd consider coming here.
The campus and the surrounding area (Adirondacks, not Canton. Canton is the saddest rundown town, quite opposite of the inside of campus) are beautiful, and if you plan to be on your own for a while it may be a great choice. But in my personal experience, attending from 2014-2016, intimate, genuine relationships were few and far between, the beauty surface level, and the beer and toxic environment far more prevalent than anything else.
Please, whatever individuality you value in yourself, hold on to that piece and put it up next to each school you're choosing. If you have the financial flexibility to consider SLU, and that individuality is anything other than drinking, look elsewhere. Maybe somewhere warmer! read more
