This was one of the first places I really visited in Northfield, taking a wonder around the tiny church grounds amongst the really, really old gravestones, it really feels like you should be out in a small village in Shropshire somewhere rather than a suburb of Birmingham.
This church is at the centre piece of old Northfield as a conservation area and is one of the few remaining Medieval churches in Birmingham. It's an amazingly quaint church from the 12th-15th century with amazing stained glass windows from the 19th century. I'm not religious at all but I really love the grandeur and gravitas of old buildings.
With the 17th century Great Stone Inn across the way, the windy roads and a village pound, it's a great contrast to the new hub of Northfield along the Bristol Road. Just to clarify in case you wonder what the village pound is, yes, you have probably guessed correctly it's a secured room, but it has a giant old stone from Wales in it's centre and it wasn't for people (I'd assumed drunks) but for their cattle. Amazing and random.
If you want to get away from the hubbub of Brum it's a quick drive up here to feel completely transported. read more
