A small quiet place for final peace. This is still run by the Catholic Church, and is the resting place of many of my Wife's family, probably me too someday. Well maintained and peaceful. read more

This is the second death our family has experienced in the last few months and costs are unfortunately, of great concern. We were looking for a simple cremation for our loved one and we met with BrIan Hahn at Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home. We did not have an appointment and were only in town for a couple of days. Brian dropped everything to meet with us and although we were not able to use his company's services, he was generous, compassionate and thoughtful. He guided us to another service which was able to provide what we were looking for. We will always remember his kindness and generosity at this difficult time for our family.

I cannot express how much this organization made a difficult time and easy and smooth as possible. I highly recommend.

I called today to try and make similar arrangements and to pre-pay. When I tried to call (really that's where I started) , the most bizarre "voice" answered - pretty sure it was the world's worst AI. The AI claimed it couldn't hear me and hung up on me. I tried to call again and did get a human being but it was a callback service. I also tried filling out a form but that directed me to a sales person who wanted to know when to call. When I asked to speak with the same person I dealt with 9 years, they responded that no one is there from 9 years. Since we worked with the owner 9 years ago, that must mean Advantage was sold.

Sadly, time has not been kind to some graves and many gravestones are virtual unreadable, making one wonder who those lost souls were. Thankfully, there appears to be a volunteer staff that cleans up the graveyard and does their best to keep the gravestones up and the graveyard clean. Was one homeless man walking around but he left us alone, otherwise we had the place all to ourselves. Definitely worth a visit. Not far from downtown and an east outing for a walk. (Eastern Cemetery was closed every time I tried to go, but Western was seemed just as good.)

Now usually, I like to haunt Evergreen (and many others), but I had never checked Western Cemetery out...until now. I have received a tour of the Eastern Cemetery, which was very interesting and also told a bit about how the Western Cemetery got started. Since the reviewer before me laid out the history, I won't rewrite it here, but I will say, this cemetery is well worth the visit. There is so much history here with tombstones dating back to the early 1800s. It overlooks part of the bay on the west side, and has a unique landscape about it (lots of pine trees, and little paths, but also while being out in the open - relatively?). It's hard to explain the landscape, but it is a very enjoyable walk, and it is rarely ever busy. I will say, I came across condom wrappers and beer cans on my walk, which is not uncommon, but I don't ever see that sort of thing at Evergreen or other cemeteries, so I would tread lightly at night at this particular one!

The cemetery is located in a peaceful and lovely section of South Portland and even has a small river flowing through it. The benches are a greenish blue color and Roger offered to give me the paint for the table but I wanted the natural wood for now and I'm so glad I did.
