Donovan helped keep the school going when times were rough and helped my family stay (and others in need) when I lost my job.

The staff at this school is remarkable not only because of their depth of knowledge on various subject, but because of the fresh approach that they take to education and the compassion that they show their students. It was my experience that the teachers at Northside didn't punch out as soon as the bell rang (or the music played). As for the overall environment, this school has always been extremely progressive in it's approach to the arts and it's dedication to pursuing them. The open mics used to be something of legendary quality for Chicago high school students, and that tradition has been carried on by the annual arts festival the school presents. I found myself completely prepared for college, but more importantly, completely prepared to go after the things in life I wanted to explore personally and artistically. Northside always treated me more like a human than a statistic, which is rare in the CPS. If I ever made the mistake of procreating, I'd be sending my kid here.

Northside College Prep is an excellent and rather unusual high school. It's a Chicago public…read moreschool, with selective enrollment. Students must apply, have a great academic record, and score very well on an entrance exam in order to be accepted. All academic classes are taught at the honors or AP level, which provides the challenge needed by motivated students. My daughter is a freshman here, and so far I've been very impressed with the curriculum, faculty, and teaching methods. The schedule resembles that of a university: each academic class meets twice a week. Every Wednesday is dedicated to an alternative learning program called "Colloquium" which gives students an opportunity to sample a variety of subjects. The administration is well organized and supportive of the staff. In addition, there are very strong parent organizations that contribute to the life and health of the school community. If you know of an academically gifted grade school student, I would highly recommend that you consider NCP when evaluating high schools.

I use to go here many years ago when it was St. Scholastica all girls school. My son went here his freshman year and there was a lot that got swept under the rug. The principal is hard to get in contact with, Ms. Vasquez and Mr. Fusco handle almost everything and the female security here are extremely unprofessional and rude. I'll keep it short since my first review got removed. If you care about your kids and want them to get a great education, I suggest not to go here. I think the only thing this school has going for them is their performing arts plays they showcase and band concerts. Other than that, security isn't great because there are a ton of fights I've witnessed as a parent and had to call the police and take matters into my own hands while I was waiting for my son. A huge incident also happened with my son and my teen didn't get the proper support from this school after it happened. I've also had an encounter with a certain security guard and she came off extremely petty, childish and not professional at all. Please hire actual security that knows how to do their job and conduct themselves, Amber hangs out in the back with students after school and gets too comfortable with the students to the point where it looks inappropriate for a guard and student to engage in conversations like she's one of the "homies". This is a huge reason why there are so many kids with violent and bully behavior here. Instead of intervening you have lazy security guards that do nothing but act like they are teenagers just lounging with students. Where was security when my son was sucker punched by a kid that harassed him for no reason? Where was security when two boys older than my son attacked him in the locker room? I reported the threats before the actual assault happened and no one took it serious before or after, resulting to me transferring him out of the school. It's quite disappointing because I feel like the staff here doesn't care enough about the students. You have enablers here that rather support the bullies and female security guards that rudely interrogate parents when we pull into the drive way to pick up our kids.

They both bully the younger kids and so what they can so the black high school kids don't graduate. You can complain to the network but they sweep everything under the rugs. I have complained thousands of time about the assistant principal bullying my 12 year old and nothing as been done about it. You can request parent conference and try and call and talk to them and they are always unavailable or in a meeting. I have been waiting three for the principal to return my calls. They make up policy as they go alone and when ask to see it in writing they give you the run around. Academically they don't teach your child anything different then a public school. I've actually sat in on a class and the teacher had no control of the student. Once I stood up and got the class attention and handed the class back to the teacher, the teacher proceeded to put on a YouTube video. If you care of your kids future this is not the school for them. Your best bet is to take them up the street to CMSA.
