I've been bringing donations here from back when it was under Franciscan Friars. The current location entrance is under construction and is no longer on 96th St. IT HAS MOVED AROUND THE CORNER TO THE DOORS AT AMSTERDAM & 97th St. just up the steps inside the black gates. I am so happy to see they've survived the pandemic. I don't know how this iteration of the thrift shop is. Again, I was dropping off donations, so I haven't seen this thrift in action, but if it's anything like its predecessor, it should be very nice and full of great stuff. read more

One of the few thrift shops left in the city that is actually a thrift shop IOW, where you pay a lot less because it's used stuff. (I stopped going to the big three because they started charging almost what the item would be new). They downsized for renovation or something, but maintain a good selection. read more

This thrift store is quite small... about the size of a large room where maybe 10 racks of clothing, a few shelves of homeware, some shoes, and a couple racks of coats and jackets. The prices are good despite the small assortment. Shorts $3, tops $4, dresses $5, coats $15, kids $1, houseware $1. I didn't see anything over $15 which was nice. If I lived in the area I'd check it out often, otherwise, i probably won't be going out of my way to visit. Staff was nice, too. read more

I've come to this place for a long time ..well since living in the area . If you're like me ; you love a hood ole thrift shop ..someone's "junk" is another's treasure ..a lightbulb went off in my head (go figure) as I was in the area shopping for a new lamp. I didn't want something that looked so contemporary. I didn't want a desk lamp; And I didn't want a lamp shade. I have a very romantic vibe in my home ..so I needed something "antiquish" went in to the thrift store and as always found a beautiful lamp. For 7 bucks ; with no shade ; and it worked .. also found a couple of other items ..they're very nice and helpful here always . Not a housing works ; however skip the hooplah and just keep your eyes peeled when coming here ! read more

i went with a buddy of mine to st francis thrift store on the upper west side as she loves the thrift shop experience, especially the church based ones as the selection is plenty from clothing , books , furniture (big and small) homegoods , etc. i browsed around a little and found a few trinkets i can find some use for, and both for a whopping 8 bucks means that if i cant find any purpose for the 2 items , then its only a 8 dollar investment. not the best looking items in my opinion but folks are filling those carts including my gal buddy and you cant beat the prices . overall its a typical church basement thrift shop set up with hit or miss in finding a useful treasure or gift . lets give 4 stars cause jesus is watching . read more

Dropped by St Francis Thrift Store on a whim to see if we could find a coat, but it was disorganized and quite bare. I know thrifting is pretty hit or miss, so I'm not sure if I just came on an off day and would return in the future. Gave an extra star because I saw a set of 4 nice chairs. I used to love Manhattan before it turned into the most pretentious place on earth filled with anorexic hostile women and metrosexuals (though Brooklyn fits this bill too), had a sweet deal, and lived close by enough that I'd go here all the time. Recently, I came across it and couldn't believe that it was still around. I never thought to complete a review on this place but when searching for the hours of the shop, I was shocked to find it on yelp with less than 5 stars. Unlike the Salvation Army which gets donations on trucks from everywhere, this place it seems, mostly gets donations from the local residents that live in the "why not have it all?" upper west side location making their donations fantastic finds. Also, the restriction of donation influx, makes it less likely to me, that the bed bugs have migrated and multiplied on each item. Unlike Housing Works which seems to have forgotten the concept of thrift, their prices are incredibly um, thrifty. I found an in perfection condition Talbot skirt and Kenar skirt for 5.00 each. They also have some great, and I mean great, vintage finds. Not the "desperate want to be hipster so I'll always wear a Fedora vintage", but true vintage. I found a dress for $7.00 that people rave over. Their book and music selection is great too. The staff is also helpful. They were helping me find the match to a pair of seemingly never used shoes for 4.00. True to a thrift store, specializing in thrift, they do not take anything but cash. I actually think I should just delete this review to defeat my competition. I will rip that 7.00 vintage dress right out of your hands, bitch. For those that do not think this is a true find, Bloomingdale's awaits you. read more

Unhelpful staff and dirty store. To top it off- my brand new phone was stolen from my bag while shopping and staff told me they would pull the camera footage, but never followed through even after I called back repeatedly. Incredibly shifty. I will not be back. read more

I really wanted to love this store, but ultimately other thrift stores just around the corner have a better selection and with much better organization; St Francis only organizes by general type of clothing (tops, bottoms, outerwear) and gender. They don't have a fitting room, and all of their sales are final sale, so you're really just guessing as to whether or not you'll like your purchase. They say on their website that they don't accept donations with holes or other defects on them, but the last time I visited (two days ago) I found small holes and/or stains on around a dozen of the items I looked at. Even more annoying, the lighting in the shop is such that these kinds of defects are almost unnoticeable until you exit the store with them. The prices are a positive aspect of the store, they're not unreasonable, but I was just really frustrated with the quality of items and how difficult it was to look through their selection. I visited a total of four separate times, and each time I tried to go through their jewelry collection but I simply couldn't because everything was tangled together into two trays. I did my due diligence and spent good time during one of my visits to look through a majority of their selection, both men and women, by hand before writing a review, so I don't think I'm speaking from a place of only seeing a minority of what the shop offers. A good store but I have always prioritized assurance of quality over prices when it comes to buying secondhand. read more

This is a great place to find good items. They have good books as well. Some days are a hit and miss but i always find something. Some brands that I've found here are lucky brand, h&m, madden girl, loft, antik, and nike. The staff are cool. Giving donations is a easy process. There aren't any dressing rooms so i just try on the clothing near the furniture. read more

This store is truly a blessing from God. I lost a job and now I am interviewing and needed nice shoes that fit me and also a nice jacket and tie. The price on tie and coat was exceptional tie $4.50 and suit jacket (perfect new condition for $9) but those shoes were marked $40-- and the manager who I can't remember her name but was empathetic and say I want you to get that job let me get those at half price. I spent $33 for what almost certainly be closer to $300. If God blesses me with a job I will be back for more ties and dress clothes and some very cheap DVD and electronics. The manager spoke about some of the prices and she does a ton of research to make sure the prices are right. Someone's marked a high levels women's bag all leather prob $200 retail at just $9 and after looking on line and based on it condition did raise the price but says she does on some occasions make adjustments and there are many things she never gets to before people snatch it up. This place is hard to spot if you don't know about it. It's in a church basement next to a flower shop, which means in the spring and summer it's surrounded by a camouflage of foliage. In terms of clothing, this place is really hit or miss. I've been coming here for years, and sometimes there is nothing special--old, stained clothes. But sometimes, I find really amazing vintage stuff. Recently I bought an incredible red vintage dress from the 70's for 6 bucks. They're similar with miscellaneous housewares and stuff. Sometimes they just have the usual thrift shop collection of crappy, broken inkjet printers. But once, a few years back, I found a gorgeous shiny black 1950's Smith Corona typewriter in perfect condition...for ten bucks. I really go for their amazing selection of cheap used books, and to say hi to the guy who works there, whose name is Brian I think. The staff is all cheerful and friendly, and you can always count on a chat with some of the regular customers. Go for the experience, stay for the occasional great find and good prices. read more

Since I just wrote a review of a church I might as well get this one done as well. lol I've been to this thrift store plenty of times and the people who work here are some of the friendliest people around. As they say, they are the salt of the Earth. The prices are decent and it's a great place to bring your unwanted goods to donate. Just make sure you wash all the clothing BEFORE you bring it down. No one wants to go through old stinky socks from 2 weeks ago. STANDARDS people! Be considerate. That's all. Only problem is that they don't have a website and their answering machine sounds dated. read more

This place is adorable, spacious, organized-ish. There is a most exciting set of $1 bins right when you walk in that totally sets the right mood. Because thrifting is exciting. I got a couple businessy skirts and a waffle-knit shirt for $10, which is quite reasonable for a thrift store (unlike some other thrift shop *coughcoughvalleythriftcough*). The people here are super friendly and accommodating. And there are ATMs nearby if you need cash. yay! read more

This is a cute thrift store located in the basement of a church. It's small, but if you look hard enough you can find some cute finds. I found a few sweaters, a CD, and a yoga/Pilates DVD. It didn't cost much at all. If I lived in the area and had a granny cart, I would've snagged the encyclopedias they had. One set of 20-some encylopedias was $10 for the complete set! Note: This thrift store does not accept credit cards, so bring cash! read more

The St. Francis thrift store has a pretty good selection of used books (not after I was finished, though), along with a fair amount of clothing and household items. It's not as big as most Salvation Army Stores, but I'm sure you could get some finds here. An added bonus, if you like to donate your frequent purges of old clothes and household items, they are open on Sunday afternoons when the nearby Salvation Army is closed. read more

I'm not going to lie, this place is filled with trash, BUT! there are really nice, random, beautiful finds. The thing is, most of those finds don't fit me. I once found an awesome black skirt but it was 2 sizes bigger...I also found a wicked pair of white heels but they were size 9. Oh the agonyyyyy... My friend found a pair of Doc Martens there for $15. NICE. Plus, this place is big, and has tons of records, books, etc for a $1. Funky Worm, anyone? read more

I have never found anything I'd actually buy here. I think Salvation Army has a leg up on Francis when it comes to reusable items. Some of the things being sold here really should have just been thrown out. I know Salvation makes sure that everything works and is in 'decent' condition before putting it out on the racks. I wonder if Francis does the same... But it's my choice of place to donate all my clothes, kitchenware, etc. read more

I donated books today at 2pm. So the guy at the desk (black hair, glasses, facial hair, maybe 24 yrs old), instead of saying 'thanks' he barked at me "take your donations to the back room!". They have regained a five for friends and family. A part of my elaborate circle of thrift shopping and media appropriation. The church tried to remove the book section. They heard our pleas and needs. We go there for books and invariably buy other things. For children to browse and buy books, esp. by families of modest means, means greater access to literacy and joy, not to mention intellectual aspirations and development are encouraged and accessible. I bring my elderly father who loves books. We puruse cds, DVDs and other media gems. The manager is kind and has a brilliant eye for value. St. Francis Thrift Shop has none of the pretense of Housing Works or rustic chaos of Salvation A. They Redeemed and re-humanized. An integral part of the neighborhood! I was thrilled to discover that my favorite NYC thrift shop has re-opened. Bought, what I think, is a beautiful Asian-inspired dish there today for $2. I am saddened, though, to learn that they are no longer selling books. I found this shop to be as exciting as the best used bookstores in London and will miss the opportunity to browse and purchase truly interesting books. I love thrift stores, and this one feels like a good hometown thrift store. The staff is super friendly, and the prices are low. It's not insanely well organized, but it's a THRIFT STORE. The hunt is part of the fun! And like all thrift stores, most of the time when I come in I don't find much, but every once in awhile I find some real treasures here. read more

Thrifting in NYC is an adventure everytime. I've been to just about every big thrift shop in the city and St. Francis by far beats them all with selection and prices. I always find something there when I visit - rarely do I find items more than 15$. It's a little ways out but so worth the trip! read more

What kind of New York thrift store doesn't have books???? Since this store reopened, they got rid of the books because apparently they don't make enough money. So make them cheaper or give them away for free in the foyer like they used to. Jesus would approve! The free books were great, and were a real draw. I came for the books and would always wind up buying clothes. Their prices are great for clothes I found a Calvin Klein dress for two bucks! Still, having no books is terrible so I don't even bother coming here anymore. NEW YORK IS BOOK COUNTRY BRING BACK THE BOOKS!!! There's a lot of junk here, for sure. It's not well organized. I didn't see any discernible pricing system. There's no place to try anything on. But what I saw from the few price points, stuff's decently priced for a thrift store. Its hard sometimes to keep your cool with long lines to deal with and new yorkers always being in a hurry but they do it! It was ok. I was looking for work clothes. They had good name brands. Only major issue was they had no dressing room. Minor issue is, they do not inspect the clothes for stains, holes or missing buttons. So inspect the clothes before you by. People were nice. read more

The store has gone through a lot of management changes in the last year. The new people are nice but the place is not easy to visit or shop in--they are taking huge pieces of furniture that don't seem to sell (the place is down a steep flight of stairs...furniture? And not even nice furniture--think greyish sofas). There is no rhyme or reason to the book section, which is too bad: the proximity to Columbia made for some good castoffs. Now--forget it, they can't even put the cookbooks in one section. Hint to whoever's running it these days: 4 empty salsa jars = trash. Empty chinese food containers = trash. two or more diaper jeanies or whatever they are= trash. Throw them out. On plus side, if there is one: books have been discounted as much as 2 or more for a dollar, shoes are cheap, and UWS parents continue to donate barely used high quality (eg Melissa and Doug) toys, games, books. I've been coming here (and donating) for 16 years. I've found early american glass vases for a buck, framed daguerrotypes (4 for 2 dollars), English and French engravings from the 1700's, 2 huge framed fern specimens from the 1924 British Pteridological Expedition to North America ($5 each), etc. It was completely unique and now....4 salsa jars? read more

Good fiends every now and then... But I will complain that they don't accept credit cards, and on two occasions I've found items without a price tag and when I go to the cashier they look at me like I was the one who ripped up the price tags and then they start to call whoever is in charge at full voice in the store to give me a random price for the item. Other than that I won't complain anymore. read more

I love this place especially my son; we find such great items in good shape or even new ; absolutely recommend it to anyone who's willing to look around and have enough time to find a good treasure. This is one of the few secondhand stores in the area with legit thrift store prices. And because it's on the UWS, they get a lot of nice, brand name clothing. It isn't as curated as Housing Works, but it's small, so you don't have to sift through much to find something worth taking home. Good book selection too! read more

Prices have went slightly up and I used to love shopping on Sundays on my only day off but the employees there are so rude, especially the guy with the long hair and glasses, his attitude is horrible, but I am glad they changed the store hours, now they stay open until 6pm I will try to shop on another day since I leave work at 4pm read more
