I took St. Elias Alpine Guides out onto famed Root Glacier here in McCarthy/Kennicott, Alaska and Wrangell St. Elias National Park.
Although I wrote a separate review for my Root Glacier experience, I'd just like to dive into some more details about who St. Elias Alpine Guides are...
First off, I conveniently booked my 8-hour, all day tour with them online with their website. It was easy and simple, completing the reservation on my own. With taxes, fees and I also purchased a little snack-pack add-on for $8 (nuts, chips, jerky, granola bars), my total came to $162.
Some people may think $162 is pricey...but alas...it's the complete opposite! Anytime you're afforded an opportunity to step out onto a glacier and explore around with 2 personal tour guides for an all day excursion...money is really priceless. Lol, $162 is a "drop in the bucket" compared to other tours I took throughout my Alaskan travels, which cost twice as much.
And...there were about 12 people in my tour group. So, ultimately, to have 2 tour guides for 12 people is a great ratio. I felt like a VIP, lol.
After booking my tour, which had availabilities for every single day throughout the summer season, I received an email confirmation with all details needed. This email laid out the plans. It was extensive to say the least, even confirming the pickup location where I'd be escorted right to St. Elias Guides Office, to officially begin the tour.
Included as well were a pair of crampons to navigate onto Root Glacier as well as all instructions needed for the day, like...having a pair of gloves, layered clothing, sunglasses, a backpack and even advice for tipping the guides at the end of it all.
St. Elias Alpine Tours offers many other guided options, not just this full day Root Glacier Excursion. Here's a list of adventures offered here in Kennicott, Alaska...
- Ice Climbing - $165
- Ice Cave Exploration - $115
- Historic Mine Hike - $115
- Kennicott Mill Town Tour - $28
- Guided Fly-In Hike and Kayaking - $580
- Glacier Lake Paddle - $105
- Raft and FlightSee - $375
- Half Day Glacier Hike - $105
I was picked up at the McCarthy Footbridge by van, then taken to the St. Elias Guides Office to check-in. I was next introduced to my 2 tour guides and measured for crampons.
Then it was a casual 2-mile hike over to the "Toe" of Root Glacier where we placed the crampons onto our feet and started the 4 hour journey.
So, yes, you receive about 4 hours of time on Root Glacier. The guides will navigate you to all the cool, worthwhile spots for discovering what makes Root Glacier wondrous and photogenic.
About halfway through the tour, we stopped for lunch for 30 minutes. Although I was instructed ahead of time to bring my own lunch with me, my guides prepared hot chocolate, coffee and tea for the group to warm up to. It was a pleasant amenity and break during the adventure.
Before long (around 3pm), it was time to return back towards the office in Kennicott and ultimately to the footbridge where it all started.
I believe 4 hours was enough exploring time to get a real feel perspective of the glacial landscape. Unfortunately, though, there were miserable, rainy and dreary conditions outside...but regardless of weather, these St. Elias Alpine Guides give you advanced warning that tours are never postponed. Under any conditions, rain or snow...they say to be prepared for the elements.
Btw, although I was layered for the cold temperatures at the end of the month of August, while hiking onto Root Glacier, I did warm up and removed my jacket.
Lastly, I just need to mention my tour guides. They were Kelsey and Victor. They couldn't have been friendlier guides! Along the 2-mile hike from Kennicott to Root Glacier, both Kelsey and Victor personally came over to me and asked about me and who I am.
I could sense they genuinely wanted to get to know me on a human level, not just because it was their duty. I really appreciated this. I don't talk often so getting to let them know some insight into my background was an added bonus.
Plus, along the entire tour...I asked Kelsey and Victor multiple times for multiple photos of me and they graciously obliged. No matter how many times I asked, the answer was always "yes"!
In the end, I have completed a lot of tours throughout my travels, but yet here at Root Glacier and with St. Elias Alpine Guides, I maybe had the best experience of my life.
Thank you to Kelsey and Victor for making this journey such a memorable experience. I think, it was because of their friendliness and generosity putting me as priority #1 while out on Root Glacier, it made all the difference, regardless of rain or shine. read more
