There are a wide range of classes and various levels of membership available. You can also choose to pay as you go which is a great way to try it out. The pool looked good. I tried out the salsa aerobics class which was fun, popular and the instructor was great - full of energy and enthusiasm, and it was a great class. The only downside is that apparently the "spa" bit - jacuzzis etc - is closed indefinitely.

We took our 2 children (2 and 4) to Rascals for the first time yesterday. Entry fee was about £4.50…read moreper child so as per the earlier comment, if you see yourselves going back then take out a membership. The play area is really compact, as everything is in a self contained cube, covered in strong netting that goes up to 3 levels in height (almost to the ceiling). So whilst its a good use of space, it doesnt leave much room around the edges for parents to sit and have a rest (there was a private party that had most of the tables reserved). At the same time its the only area where children can run from one area to the next so at times it can also get very crowded. When we went we didnt really relax as the only seats were next to a very noisey football game (yes we expected it to be noisey but not to struggle to speak to each other!). There were also trays of food on tables which hadnt been cleared away, so that didn't leave a great first impression either. When you go it might be quieter and cleaner, but at least our children seemed to enjoy it, and its near to where we live so we might go again. But only if we cant find anywhere better!

Shocked to received a phone call told me my daughter's swim lesson next week is…read moredelayed. but my daughter has quit the swimming lesson for two years. found that kept charging us for membership through direct debt for two years. It is not a normal gym membership, it is a class membership. For two years they just pretended not notice that my daughter did not take any of the lessons, while still put my daughter in classes that they knew my daughter will never go. contact them and they refuse to refund. I cancelled the direct debt myself. You know what? they called me again told me there is one month notice to cancel and they want me to setup the direct debt again to charge me one more month. it is part of my fault not to read the small print. just found the age to join the membership is 8. the previous lessons we took was not bonded membership and I did not notice the difference.

You can ring up almost any day and ask when the swimming sessions are; when you arrive you're more tha likley to be told that this session is about to end and there is a 45 minute wait til the next one - and your ticket won't let you start in one session and finish in the next one. I've lost count of the times we've rocked up only to discover that although it's 'adult swim' all morning it's actually in three distinct sessions, which they fail to mention on the phone. The gym is pretty well stocked though basic in equipment - but it was always good enough for me. I never had a problem getting on the equipment I wanted. Just really grill the girl on the phone about the times of the swimming sessions if you wan to avoid disappointment.

The swimming pool ladies changing rooms and shower rooms are disgusting...dirty and rotten. The main womens changing rooms are really poor too. The lockers have all been broken into and have small holes in them so unsuspecting customers would not be aware that thieves can steal their belongings. Luckily I found this out by chance. The staff on the desk act like they are on a permanent 'jolly' not really interested about customers coming in unless you're a friend of a friend and they'll let you for free. Seen this on many occasions...very annoying.

It includes a great swimming pool and gym. They run great fitness classes. I have atteded the yoga classes and it is a great way to de-stress after work! There are different types of membership opportunities to suit different circumstances. They also have a lovely new cricket pavillion and cricket green. All in all a lovely local first class fitness centre!

Downham library is also in the building, and a Health Centre. The creche is the best - great value for money and amazing staff - both my children have to be dragged out of there. My favourite classes are spinning with Ellie and Hi-Lo Aerobics. The only down side is the car park - you can only park for 2 and a half hours - be careful as it's done by camera and if you go over you get slapped with a fine automatically. With so much to do in there, it's easy to spend a lot longer there - I always have to run out and re-park!

It's still pretty new as it was built nearly three years ago and has been maintained well ever since. The swimming pool has got a great viewing gallery and the swimming pool looks out onto the the green fields of Durham Hill! The gym facilities are of a good standard too - I was pleasantly surprised! They do not have a sauna, steam room or jacuzzi though, but they do have fitness classes. I recommend the Spinning sessions - they are very popular, but very punishing for the legs! I would recommend that you travel there by bicycle (there are lots of places to lock your bicycle outside the Centre) or use public transport, because the parking is very limited. If you're lucky to get a space, the you only have two and a half hours otherwise you get fined £90 - so be warned!

There is a cafe which serves great food at very reasonable prices although the opening hours of the cafe do vary. Although the children's/family pool was fine this time (if a little busy) again the water in the main pool (esp in the deep end) was not good - clumps of hair, lots of sand, made me want to close my eyes whilst doing front crawl :-( I rang up the reception before I went but they couldn't even tell me the last time the pool was cleaned. The changing facilities are fine but we were really disappointed with the water quality once again. Advise you to swim somewhere else if you can!
