Sail on silver girl... All your dreams are on their way The bridge is now here. Minnesota is not too great about timely building or rebuilding bridges. The old Lake Street Bridge and the old High Bridge were in such disrepair before they were replaced, not to even mention what happened with the 35W bridge. Since that tragedy, we have gotten better. There is the new Wakota Bridge and the new Hastings Bridge, both of which were overdue. However, the bridge most in need of replacing - the old Stillwater Lift Bridge - took way too long to get something to finally happen. Good thing the feds and/or Sconnie probably picked up a large part of the tab. Who knows how long it would have took otherwise? The bridge is the continuation of MN Highway 36 across the river. There is a pedestrian and walking path on the north side with several platforms with nice views of Stillwater. No such path on the other side of the bridge. I let Yelp do an auto fill on the address which gave it a location in Hudson. It should really probably be listed in Stillwater or Bayport, MN or Houlton, WI. Get to work Yelp in San Fran and get a better address on this for me. K, thanks. read more

After all these years and bickering traffic is relieved in Stillwater and the St. Croix Crossing is a scenic connection to a mostly rural side of Wisconsin. The bridge curves Northeastward as you cross and watch the signs for the round-a-bouts in Wi. to find the highway you want it's a little tricky with the signage, thus a star dropped. To find the walkway on the Mn. side head North on Highway 95 and quickly watch for an unmarked road that slopes downward for parking on the side. It's a rather lengthy walk up to the bridge and a beautiful view with a cool breeze as you cross. I have to admit ten years ago I thought why not build a new four lane bridge in Stillwater but I realize the congestion would be too much for the scenic town. I'll enjoy my tax dollars at work and make more trips here and try to get either a sunrise or sunset picture sometime. read more

This bridge is literally a piece of art in transportation form. From what I have read, there is only one other bridge like this in the entire country. One mile and 700 million dollars (split between MN & WI) worth of concrete and cable construction span the St Croix River. For years, the various action groups fighting the destruction of the river bluff and views were able to hold off progress but as we know, there are not many locations to cross the river between the states and the old Stillwater lift bridge was becoming a major danger to drive on. Plus, there had to be a way better way to ferry all of the traffic across the river than through an already overly congested downtown Stillwater! There is a great observation deck along the north side of the bridge that affords a wide and beautiful view of the St Croix valley. It annoyed me that within 2 weeks of the bridge opening, some hoodlum spray painted on one of the bridge observation decks. These kinds of people should be strung from their toes over the water. One thing that really blew me away as I watched the bridge under construction were the pillars. If you take a boat under the bridge, you will see that the pillars are "reed like". This was done to make the view on the river as unobstructed as possible. They look impossibly frail but hold up an immense span. Anticipating that this bridge would be a tourist destination, they created a large paved lot on the north west side of the bridge and another smaller lot on the northeast side in WI. The ultimate plan is to construct a paved bike/pedestrian path that goes in a giant loop across the new bridge, along old 95 to downtown Stillwater, across the old lift bridge and back around to the new bridge. The total distance will be 4 miles and would be a great summer walk and/or biking trip. The bridge is pretty at night as you drive across the lit deck and look out over the water. The only quibble I have is about traffic at each side (in WI and MN). On the WI side, it's a convoluted mess to figure out how to get to old 35 with exits and roundabouts. On the MN side, you almost immediately hit a 4 way stop light once getting into MN. That whole stretch of 36 through Oak Park Heights is not a cruising area at all but all kinds of aggravation as you hit light after light headed toward 694. Yes, you avoid the nonsense traffic in old downtown Stillwater but you will still be hampered with driving right between two busy communities (OPH and Stillwater). read more

Massive, Stunning, Amazing views. It is pretty cool that I lived in the St. Croix Valley and got to witness the building of this bridge and the final product. Now folks can zip back and forth across the St. Croix from Hudson to Stillwater faster. read more

The new bridge is amazing in almost every way, you can get to WI faster by driving or walking over the saint criox and with the loop trail being completely done in the summer. This will make the bridge more fun to walk over. Overall amazing bridge read more

The approach from St Paul on 36 to the bridge, and access to Stillwater, are great. The bridge and views are beautiful BUT trying to go to Hudson, Wisconsin on 35 is almost impossible. Rather than a simple exit off the bridge onto hwy 35, 3 very confusing round-abouts lead a person all the way around and back again. Signs are too small and hard to figure just where one should go trying to read them while driving. Have "failed" twice now and will try again, think the 3rd try will be the charm. Think it was made to be a lot harder than it had to be. read more
