This review is much overdue but I hope it can help other parents searching for childcare! Our…read moredaughter, now 9 and a half months, started at Beit Yeladim when she was just 11 weeks old. As first time parents, we were nervous about having her go to full-time day care, but we felt it was the right decision for us as we both had busy schedules and wanted her to be around other babies and caretakers. We are so happy we followed our instinct on this, as we have had the best experience with the infant room at Beit Yeladim. It is difficult to describe the amount of gratitude we have towards Thany, Janet, Janette, Sylvia, Kathy, Sara, and the other teachers for providing such a safe and nurturing environment for our daughter when she is away from home. I think the biggest compliment you can give someone providing childcare is that you don't have to worry for a second about your child during the day. That is how my husband and I feel. We can focus on our work, trust that she is in good hands during the day, and look forward to spending time together at the end of the day. Through all the transitions in her life, from getting used to taking breastmilk from a bottle, to having solids, rolling, crawling (at least trying!! haha), and standing, they have been there cheering her on all along the way. I remember just a couple weeks after she started, my husband had mentioned to them during drop-off that it was my birthday... she was sent home with a hand-made birthday card for Mommy with her handprints on them :) As they have decades and decades of experience between them, I find it reassuring that so many pairs of eyes are on her. I have welcomed any suggestions they have had... from increasing the amounts of solids to advancing to faster-flow nipples, I feel like they are extra resources for me as a new parent. I really feel like we are all part of a team taking care of her.

Our experience with San Diego Jewish Academy has been mixed. The preschool and elementary programs…read morehave a lot to offer, and the middle school experience is generally positive. Unfortunately, the high school has significant issues that prospective families should carefully consider. There appear to be significant challenges with upper school leadership and faculty retention. When teachers are not adequately supported or treated well, it inevitably affects students. The resulting turnover and lack of continuity are particularly concerning in core academic subjects. Having multiple teachers for the same class over the course of a school year is disruptive to learning and falls well short of what families should expect from a private school. My oldest child will have THREE different math teachers this year. The loss of students is equally concerning - 35% of my younger child's 7th grade class did not return for 8th grade. The impact of this happening goes far beyond enrollment numbers. Teenagers lose friends and classmates, established social groups are disrupted, and the sense of community that is supposed to make a school special begins to erode. Watching classmates leave year after year takes a toll, and the students who remain deserve better than having rebuild their social world while trying to navigate an already challenging stage of life. SDJA has many positive qualities, but the high school needs stronger leadership, greater faculty stability, and a renewed focus on the student experience. I would encourage families considering enrollment to speak with current upper school parents and ask direct questions about teacher turnover and school leadership before making a decision.

Today I finally got the opportunity to check out the campus and then attended the 11:00 a.m. Sunday church service. I liked Horizon very much--the congregants seemed friendly and there were good vibes. I do not want to compare it to the church I usually go to, as far as the worship music goes. My preference is for a flashier rock music worship which gets me more in the mood for some good sermonizing. Horizon's is a very basic set-up, with a singer who plays the electric piano and a lady cellist. Nice but I need more pizzazz. Deduct 1 YELP STAR. The best part of Horizon: Mike MacIntosh. Pastor of Horizon for 36 years & just the right amount of Bible-thumping mixed in with some funny asides and personal family notes. I love that immediately we turned to Romans 8 and got right into the scriptural readings. After a prayer and amen, the Pastor read a few passages and then immediately explained what they meant to the congregation. Now this is not something all that unique, but some churches will open up the Bible, read one verse, and then the Pastor will pontificate ad nauseum the rest of the service. No, I want to get some book learning done on Sunday mornings. Breaking down Romans 8 into digestible passages and then doing explanations and some historical asides thrown in for good measure made for a perfect lesson in what Paul was actually trying to to say to the Romans regarding spiritual man versus sinful man. Could be that Pastor Mike was trained up in the Calvary Chapel method and that might account for a more literary reading of the scriptures. Next week for Easter, Pastor MacIntosh will be holding services outside in the Quad area. I think that should be nice since I noticed that the Horizon Church area is really just the school gymnasium decked out on Sunday with a stage and a mic stand. It was disconcerting listening to the sermon and looking up above for some heavenly guidance only to see basketball nets hoisted above the gathered pious crowd of Clairemont worshipers.

Blessed Sacrament Parish School is a great school. It has everything you want in a school for your…read morechild. The school culture is grounded in core social/ethical and academic values and the whole learning community (parents, staff, students, parishoners) is supportive, participative, and welcoming of all people. The learning community is diverse on many levels. There are high expectations both behaviorally and academically and student achievement is greatly prioritized. Academically the school is a 10 out of 10. Each year all or nearly all of the graduating 8th grade students are accepted and matriculate to local Parochial college preparatory high schools. The class sizes are small, with low teacher to student ratios, well below neighboring Parochial and public schools, which allow for more individualized instructional support for students. The curriculum is rigorous and well rounded with students receiving instruction within an integrated and broad curriculum, including PE, music, art, computers, religion, social studies, science, language arts, and math. Unlike in public schools or charter schools, this integrated instructional approach occurs daily. Your child will be held to high standards, great expectations, and supported in achieving. The new Principal Anne Egan, who came on board last year has the led the staff and school community with a reinvigorated energy that has been transformative, making BSPS even better than before. She is a real down to earth leader, who is approachable, and most importantly a problem solver. This school has a long history dating back to 40's and continues to be a bright light in the heart of the City of San Diego in the College area. My children love this school, I loved it when I went here ages ago, and many alumni will attest to the strong sense of history and current strength of the school and learning community to this day. If you are looking for a highly academic environment with a strong sense of community and culture, focused on academic learning and developing students with a strong sense of social and ethical values, then give Anne Egan a call at Blessed Sacrament Parish School. This place is awesome and you won't be disappointed by the quality of education and the depth of experience your child will have at BSPS.
